Apple seems to be taking a page out of the politician's handbook lately. Well, I guess when you don't have a platform to run on, you just attack your competition.

Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of world-wide marketing, also said that Android users are often running old operating systems and that the fragmentation in the Android world was "plain and simple." He added that "Android is often given as a free replacement for a feature phone and the experience isn't as good as an iPhone."

iPhone? What's that?

People are constantly asking me, what phone I have. Is that the Note II?
Haven't heard of anyone eager to buy an iPhone since November.

Schiller demonstrating the limitations of having only one brain cell. I feel sorry for him. He should be put in a jar and studied.

His comments are particularly hilarious to me, since the iPhone 5 was basically just Apple duplicating the features of my HTC One S.

He's not completely wrong.

I own both devices, and from a simple "get things done" perspective, as well as easier management, iOS does win in those area's.

I dont get this comment. Anyways his comment on fragmentation is not wrong, but the android being given primarily as free phones are not completely correct. Among friends its all Flagship, but my cousins and family that have android are mostly the Free and the ones under $100. So not completely true. I have both devices at the current moment as my work just gave me a Note II last week, and I have the iPhone 5 as my personal. Both Android and iOS have gotten so close to each other swapping between the two isnt much of a big deal anymore. Although I still absolutely believe that iOS has better games FWIW.

I own a Galaxy S3 and have been using Android based phones since the original G1 which still works flawlessly till this day. The only comment he made this is accurate is the fragmentation in the deployment of Android. Some devices never went past Gingerbread but then again a lot of these devices don't have the hardware requirements to run ICS or Jellybean. I've never had to sign into "9 different services" to get my device running I log into gmail and bam I'm off to the races. The novelty of "i" decives is finally wearing off and people are realizing you can get more for your buck and get some really interesting features as well. I'm not going to even comment on how much you can skin and mod Android to look completely different from a stock release.

Half of those devices that "dont have the hardware requirements to run ICS or Jellybean" is pretty much bull. The G1 could run 2.2 when HTC said it didnt have enough RAM to run 2.1. Most of those phones that OEMs say cant run can definitely run them, they just dont want to update them. If devs on XDA can get them running and running well then its just BS on the OEM.

His anger betrays the fact that Apple shares are falling and that the iPhone is played out. He knows this and he is now, much akin to a school yard bully, just showing his ass.

iPhone is a perfect match if your frequent Starbucks daily along with having a cute little nautical star tat somewhere on your body.

the fragmentation was there early on, the speed at which android moved ahead just made the fragmentation pronounced but at the same time, they have been keeping up on lessening the overall impact, but I still prefer Android over an iphone though

It's funny that the douchebag rages like this on the run up to the SGS4.

I've been really getting the urge to get an S4 or move to some other high-end Android phone. I've had an iphone since the original and have just kept it because it worked exactly as I needed it to. Being truthful, ios has gotten stale. Apple just can't seem to keep up.

I don't need shiny wall papers or to be able to run some malware app. Nor do I care to make phone calls on a tablet. I'm gonna give the S4 a serious try this time and see how things work. Given that, I think it's stupid to say Apple has no platform to stand on.

Agreed. I'm not a fan of apple's business practices, I loathe them actually - but I will take an iPhone5 over any android device any day of the week.

Blah blah blah...I had a Droid X and got a free iPhone 4S from work. Every day I wish we used Androids, because this thing is f'n terrible. It's like a smart phone for children. Yeah, it mostly works, because it barely does anything.

Lol, that's quite the hyperbole there. If apple is hurting I would love to own a business that is hurting. Their sales and profit margins are simply insane.

Curious, what task is the iphone not capable of doing?

They were at one point and for a long time. I guess you are unaware that Apple has had to cut back drastically on manufacturing as well as making a mad scramble to turn things around, come up with new gimmicks after their stock has fallen to historic lows. All signs that people are tired of the small little white phone that really has no character.

We have a Apple 4S 32GB and a Galaxy Nexus Prime. The Nexus always gets the most attention when we are in public. We've been trying to trade the 4S for a Galaxy Note 2. So far no luck as people love their Galaxy Note 2's.

I love my SGS3. I've had to mess with some iPhones for work and I'm not really overly impressed with them over my Android phone. They feel less intuitive in terms of UI/button commands (maybe because there's only one generic hardware button) and overall it took me a lot longer to do what I needed to with it. I will say that "smoothness"-wise, the iPhone is slightly better (and I do mean very, very slightly), but I would expect that on a closed platform.

Can any of you Android guys provide a real world reason to go Android, ie, something specific that "takes longer" or something the iphone can't do? Public attention doesn't matter because, well, I'm not 12.

His comments aren't exactly wrong, but not exactly relevant either. And you can expect more from this guy as Apple's stock continues to slide.

Install apps not controlled by Apple would be a big reason. Play / view / use anything not controlled by Apple would be another. Use your phone the way you want? The list is a mile long.

He's only half right though. Android is certainly fragmented and majority of people are running an outdated version of Android, mostly Gingerbread.

Though to say the experience of Android isn't as good as iPhone is a stretch at best. Nothing like losing your jailbreak every time they update the iPhone. Oh hey, remember the apps fiasco?

Wigits on the homescreen that are useful. Full Google Maps integration. Google Now. Full on Multi-tasking.

Hell, when the iPhone 5 came out, they copied the anodized aluminum case and "take a picture while shooting video" features of the phone I have, among other features. And I got my phone about 6 months earlier.

QFT. I have 4.1 running on my G1 Epic4G. Might be a little sluggish compared to my G3, but it runs good enough I wouldn't have a problem using it day to day.

It's more a combination of OEM's and carriers not wanting to dedicate the resources for software updates. OEM's churn out new phones every 6-9 months that they want to sell. Carriers want to sell new phones that have the latest and greatest features with new plans. So it's counter-productive to either of them to upgrade the software on existing phones so they have the latest features.

G1 went from 2.1 at release to 2.3. And it took them forever to do it. Meanwhile 4.0 runs just fine on it.

People should learn to expect that their shiny new Android device is end-of-life'd the minute they buy it. Any software updates are a gift and not a requirement.

I think the iPhone is perfect for those that don't mind a closed platform, do not mind almost no customization and are OK with spending a massive premium over all other phones on the planet. And let's face it, the iPhone just looks better in your hand while you're out buying a 7$ coffee not to mention the perfect fashion apparel item for your horned rimmed glasses.

I don't know, I've always thought of the iPhone as hideous. And the only people I've had dropped calls from where using iPhones at the time.

Coincidence?! I think not.

If apple were still selling the original iPhone, 3G and older versions of IPod there would be OS fragmentation. Because iOS is bound only to apple hardware, it can control the few models that can handle the OS version. Try running iOSv6 on the original iPhone.
BTW, can any of you Apple fanboys provide a real world reason to go iPhone??
Apple doesn't have viruses? - bull***t
iOS doesn't lockup - bull***t
iOS is more fluid - nope, it's the same as JB on Premium Phones
Can iOS have 2 apps running at the same time on the screen? - NOPE!

"Because Apple" isn't really what I was looking for. Not really sure I'm gonna get an unbiased opinion from you anyway.

Thanks. This stuff is a little more useful. To be truthful, I've spent so little time with Android that I'm very unfamiliar with it's abilities.

One question, didn't the iphone debut with an anodized aluminum case?

How are the "cloud" services? I really do like having the cloud backups and being able to sync documents etc. over icloud.

iPhones are still a good device, but Apple has now become the older kid who whines when their baby sibling gets more attention than them. Android is providing more features and excitement to consumers while Apple just plays slow and steady. Their cash cow has been grazing in the field a bit too long.

These are mainly reasons I like the iphone.

Simplicity. I guess that is both a positive and a negative. The "ecosystem". Appstore. One big thing for me was always smoothness of the os. I hear that Android has pretty well caught up on that point. I dunno. Not really sure what you mean by "nope, it's the same as JB on Premium Phones". Also, why would I want more than one app running on the same 3-5" screen at one time?

As far as virus's. I've never heard of anyone getting a virus on an iphone.

Pretty well how I see it.

When anyone shows me their iPhone4/5 I just say -

"Oh an iPhone!? How ordinary!"

I have an Android phone and an iPad. As far as tablets are concerned I think I enjoy my iPad and don't necessarily think I want an android model. Yes they have many capabilities that some may need like ad card support, USB support, ... but I don't need that on my tablets that is what a PC is for. As for my phone I love my android device with the added customization. Whenever I see the home screen of an I phone I immediately think of a messy room. With the ability to add widgets that simply make the phone more useful I wouldn't think about switching to an iPhone.

I'm able to change the battery on my Samsung Galaxy S3 and put in a newly charged battery from the Samsung charging cradle. I can change the screen of my S3 or any Android device to look how I want it to look. An Android device can be customized. I can install programs that Apple wouldn't allow on their devices.

Where the fuck do you go that your phone gets attention? Seriously why do you guys keep saying this crap, neither phones gets "attention" in public or is a fashion statement.

Its March, the last iPhone dropped in october which is almost six months ago. Apple will release the new model in late summer and record record sales again. Pointing to Apple's stock price as evidence of the "market" being bored with their product makes you look ignorant. Apple was WAY overvalued, they couldn't stay that high forever.

Apple needs to wake up and smell the coffee. They'll continue losing mobile market share as long as they have discrete control over iOS and only allow it installed on their specific product lines. Android saturation will grow since Google doesn't dictate that it be installed on a limited product line.
