A new Nielsen report breaks down how much time is spent on consoles playing games (online and off), streaming video, music and so on. It looks like Xbox 360 gamers play the most games while PS3 owners watch more movies. Wii users don't do much of anything.

Ironic that XBox 360 owners play games the most while PS3 owners watch the most movies when Sony is making a big gaming push with the PS4 while Microsoft is reportedly setting the next XBox up as the do-it-all set top box for the living room.

This article is not really surprising. Honestly, despite my vast game collection for all the consoles, I tend to use my PS3 as a dedicated blu-ray player and my XBox as a Netflix box.

(I prefer the remote for the XBox over the PS3. The PS3 one you hit any button and the machine comes on, which is often not what I want. Also, I have an original PS3, so always worried about blowing the laser.)

And the Wii & Wii U? They collect dust.

I play games on my Wii. As for music, Milkdrop will not be surpassed for many years, which is a big reason why I only play music on my PC.

10% gaming 50% DVD 40% Amazon Prime on our XBOX 360...The gaming only because the kids and wife play from time to time.

That would be accurate for me, I still play games on my xbox 360. Now that my HTPC has a bluray drive my PS3 barely gets used. I think my PS3 maybe been powered on 10 ten times year or so.

i think i need to get me an Xbox, apparently you can get 101% usage out of it

Using these devices for what they were designed to do?????

Yeah, I need Nielson to tell me that. Whatever.....moving on.....

Xbox is 100% online gaming 100% of the time pretty much Halo these days with friends. PS3 is 100% offline gaming 100% of the time, I havent played any game online on my ps3 in 2 years. Wii lol havent touched it in 3 years.

Both my Xbox 360 and PS3 are in the gather dust catagory. They had novelty for about a week each for me.
I seriously need to pawn the things off on someone who will actually use them.

If my tax refund came to me anytime soon, I would gladly take off that PS3 off your hands especially if it's a first gen PS3 or first gen PS3 Slim.

Unfortunately, the IRS is terribly slow this tax season and I'm already a month and a half since I filed waiting for that refund. :(

That chart is bit deceiving at first glance because the numbers are compared side-by-side. It implies that more people on Wii watch video streaming services (32%) vs .the 360 at (13%). But this is not necessarily the case because these numbers only relative to other activities.

A pie chart for each console would probably be better suited for this comparison, imo.

In regards to the online/offline game play there should be more description. For example, I don't have much choice to play several of my xbox games offline as many more are "online only" these days. Additionally does that mean offline play like I'm fully signed off, or does "offline play" include me being signed in and in group chat, but building my skills in dynasty mode, or playing through a battlefield 1P campaign while I talk with my friends? Very non descriptive bar chart.

My 360 collects more dust than my Wii anymore. I primarily game or watch movies on my PS3. I’ve had XBL for a long time, I was finally going to just let it run out and not bother renewing it. PS3 does everything online just as good or better IMO and it’s free.

During my short PS3 ownership I spent most of my time waiting for games to load and misc. updates. On GT5 I think I had about 5min of load time for every 15-20min of racing. So I'd say I spent most of my time on the PS3 waiting.

"Online gaming" is a 360 thing because you have to pay to do it, on the PS3 you don't notice or care because it's "just there". You get notes, invasions and summons in Dark Souls, whereas in the 360 version on a gold-less account it's a depressing single-player affair in a world where you are terribly alone when you need help the most. I could get on PSN and pick up the F2P Uncharted 3 MP and enjoy it again if I wanted for free anytime, but on the 360 it's like Warhammer Online - I want to experience it again but I seriously do not feel any reason to pay for it.

It's like living in a country where you have to pay a TV-license to own a TV, and there's nothing useful or interesting for you coming from where the license money goes and you cannot support what they do in the first place.

The last weekend when Gold was free to try, Dark Souls forum threads around the world were filled with smiles and happy people, sales were made and we all felt a little bit better.

And BR films don't seem to be supported for playing on the next Xbox. Strong rumors and theories but if true - guess it's all about earning money from the customers for NetFlix or whatev.

I primarily use my PS3 for Netflix, Amazon, and Bluray. On occasion I will play a game. It is hard for a console to compare to a multimonitor setup on my PC.:D I do love the PS3 for my Bluray and streaming box. I have a Harmony remote paired with it and works perfectly. I do not have an Xbox. As for the Wii, I am glad I won that and did not pay for it. That was a novelty item that lasted about an hour in my house. I even took it to my family vacation house and the aesthetics wore off just as quick.

Poor little Wii has some great games. Sadly most people just see Cooking Mama :p

I am sure there are some fun games somewhere in their line up. Checking reviews and looking at what they had to offer, none of them appealed to me. I work 60 to 75 hours a week. I love to game, but unfortunately I have to be really picky as to what I play due to a lack of free time. Even though I work that many hours, I still try to exercise. When I get done with my day, I want to sit down and play a game, not jump around my living room.
And no I have no interest in Wii fit:p.

The key word is "some". The Wii had the WORST waiting times between big releases, and that's why I got rid of it. Waiting 6 months for a new cool looking game, just to find out it's terrible sucks. That, and when I got an HD TV, the games for it looked like total shit. Graphics don't make or break a game, but they can certainly help...

By the time I got rid of mine, the only game my wife and I were playing on it was House of the Dead: Overkill.

Yes, there were a number of really good games that did come out for the Wii, but you can only play those so many times. When I got my Wii U I picked up Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 and a few others, but I really got the console to try and play Nintendo games with GOOD controls this time. The motion controls are fine for party games, but mess up most other games.

Well if you like JRPGs, I can't recommend Xenoblade Chronicles and The Last Story enough. May not look as pretty as Ni No Kuni but they are damn fine games! Protip...use the pro controller for those games and toss those Wii-motes to the side.

A little OT but Excite Truck (the 2006 launch-window title) is one of the greatest games with four wheel driving in it from the 360-PS3-Wii generation if you're looking for fun and game controls feeling right.

Good luck trying to find Xenoblade without paying stupid prices for it.
It's about $150+ on Amazon.

Looks like I lucked out when I bought it new from Gamestop.

Geez, $150 for Xenoblade. And, I thought spending $120 for Dracula X for the PC Engine console was the most I ever spent for a console game.

Yikes! Glad I got mine when I did. Pandora's Tower is coming soon too. I was going to wait on it but now I'm thinking I shouldn't.

The Last Story is still reasonably priced (around $30).
I guess I need to get my hacked Wii back so that I can play Xenoblade as there is no way that I'm going to pay that for it.

Hmm, I hope MS and Sony are looking at these numbers when they are thinking about going to a 100% connected machine. Out of the game players it seems that a very significant portion is playing offline.

My daughter and son-in-law own multiple consoles, they game quite a bit. I know they do xbox gaming networked with some on-line. The Wii is played quite a bit, as is the Wii U - I know all the online media is through one or the other Wii's.

My house - no consoles. Well, if you can count an old 2600 in the basement in a box. Use an HTPC for my media streaming needs from my server or via the 'net. Gaming done on gaming PCs.

I tried Xenoblade but I got bored really quickly. Also, I think I was spoiled in graphics by the Xbox 360.

Guess I'm in the minority. I think I've used my PS3 to play games online maybe two, three times. My usage is about 75-80% playing games offline and the rest watching DVD/Blu-Rays. Oh, I guess I did use it for Netflix streaming episodes of Lost a few years back. That probably accounts for 1-2% of my total use.

Just get Xenoblade from Gamestop, if there's one nearby. The reason it's so expensive is that it's a Gamestop exclusive.

Actually, that should be "It looks like Xbox 360 gamers play games the most..." vs what you said. See the difference? From this data, we can't tell who plays more games because we have no idea how many games were played. Just percentages of time spent doing something. So we don't even know who has more hours on the system, either.

Now I see how people mislead others so easily...
