Aliens; Colonial Marines a Sci/Fi L4D ?

Interesting, but it's not like he's going to announce that they are going to recreate the game with better graphics. It's just going to be a long-winded "letter to the community" about how sometimes projects don't go as planned, yadda yadda yadda.

He damn well should recreate it, to be perfectly honest. Like piscian18 said, we got an incomplete title. Patching alone may not be enough to fix it, they need to go back and re-work the entire thing.

the really sad part is that I saw some pre-order numbers and they were crazy high...so in the end the game might be considered a success even though it received a critcal drubbing

Gearbox president Randy Pitchford has finally acknowledged the discrepancy between the Aliens: Colonial Marines hands-off demo and the final game that shipped to lackluster reviews last week...When asked for an explanation as to why the demo looked so much better, Pitchford tweeted, "That is understood and fair and we are looking at that. Lots of info to parse, lots of stake holders to respect."

He also noted that the explanation wouldn't be fit for Twitter, but he's looking into how to best address this issue...

Basically they were already nearing litigation with SEGA if he owns up to anything it could eventually be used in court so he's being guarded. I'd love to be a fly on the wall of the closed door response to all this right now.

so basically he's caught between a rock and a hard place...if he admits to any fault at all he could potentially be held liable by Sega but he might also get back some favor from the gaming community by coming clean...if he sticks to his 'no fault of mine' hard line stance then his image might be irreparably damaged in the eyes of the consumers who buy his games now and in the future but he can avoid any lawsuits by Sega...no matter what he does he's going to end up pissing someone off

As weird as this is to say, I really really REALLY hope they can make a sequel to this. Now now before you start throwing your expired salads at me hear me out. This was a failure, believe me I can agree with that more than anyone. Aside from the failures, look at some of the positives. The multiplayer is actually fun once you get the hang of it (and have a team that works together), actually having DIFFERENT Aliens in the game (something that has been lacking since AvP 1 + 2), not to mention all the customization you earn in the game to make your marine/alien look 'unique' (again, something lacking from AvP 2010), and having a fun coop single player experience could have made this game great. Sadly all the faults within the game way out weigh the positives. If they can take those positives, pass that on to the next Aliens game, we could have a winner on our hands (or another chance to fuck it up, but I'm being optimistic here).

Now as far as story wise, that I think would be hard to accomplish. It's hard to create a great sequel to an already groundbreaking sequel. Not all sequels are successful but when they are successful, you have a hit on your hands. One scene alone in the demo had more personality than this whole game and it's a GOD DAMN shame it wasn't put in the game (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xulEWbAyv3k just watch the first 30 secs to understand my point). I actually CARE about the squad Winter's is with in the demo and that took 30 seconds to make me like them. The actual release just didn't make me want to care about any of them. How do you fuck that up. HOW!?!? Hopefully we get some answers from Randy.

I didn't think much of Jim Sterling until this whole fiasco broke open like an diseased-ridden puss-filled wound , but I just love how Sterling just won't let this one go. Kudos to him for continuing to stick it to Pitchford and Gearbox. After reading this article I have lost complete confidence in Gearbox, who's to say they haven't outsourced a majority of Borderlands 1 & 2?

Like I said in another thread. I hope Sega ends up owning the BL IP and Pitchford's house as a result of winning their lawsuit against GB.

As much as I'd like Gearbox/Pitchford to be punished for this legally, I'd rather see them fix the game than go bankrupt and leave us with this shit.

They should be required to spend their own profits on fixing it ENTIRELY.

when has a developer ever gone back and fixed a game to this extent?...this is not a simple patch, this requires a complete overhaul...best fans can hope for is a mod overhaul

Well, like piscian18 has said, it's fairly unprecedented what has happened here. I'm not saying they will do that, I'm just saying they should.

Gearbox has proven time and time again that they only care about their own ip's-- aka Borderlands-- and don't put the time and resources into anyone else's intellectual property...Gearbox's only focus now is Borderlands 3

I really don't know what all the fus is about.

If you're a fan of the movies and grew up watching them, the game is actually great. There is so much attention to detail relating to the Aliens movie its mind boggling. (For example, the whistling wind through Hadleys Hope and the echo sound of drums when discovering something new).
Granted some of the voice acting is sub par and cliche at times but it doesn't break the immersion for me, some of its kind of funny and breaks the tension. Speaking of tension, there are some moments so far that I've played which are actually terrifying, at times you dread looking over your shoulder and hope that whatever made that hissing sound behind you didn't see you. :p

Playing this game in the dark with all the lights and sounds with the motion tracker blinking instantly transports you into the movie.

The game is entertaining and fun, what more could an Aliens fan ask for?

A whole lot more.

Agreed.

Funny thing about expectations, if you have none , sometimes you get pleasantly surprised. :p

I expected this to be better than AVP 2010. That didn't happen. I don't think those are too lofty of expectations. ;)

Funny you say that, I have been reminded of Aliens vs Preditor 1999 while playing through this one. Something about the gritty low res environments I say.....

uh, randy? is that you randy? HEY BOYS! RANDY IS HERE! BRING THE SHOTGUNS!!

I think the problem here is , people set the bar for this game so high in there minds that when it was released , it couldn't possibly meet the expectations they had for it.

But I learned that lesson with Diablo 3.

I mean fuck, atleast they tried with ACM, as far as fan service goes, ACM is head and shoulders above Blizzards offering.

If it wasn't just you praising the merits of the game I may take the whole "its a shit game" with a grain of salt. The universal gang raping of the game by pretty much everyone in the entire history of the known internet saying how bad the game is pretty much means it something is more than just a teeny tinsy bit off with it.

Yeah but how many of those reviewers are old enough to remember the 1986* movie and how many of them are actual fans of the Genre and series? Without just doing a review for a paycheck?

I gave you my honest fan review. Hell I have the movie on Laser Disk! ;)

1) People who bought the game are bashing it just as hard as reviewers.
2) There are a shitload of problems with the game that have nothing to do with the story.
3) I am sure if we looked hard enough we would find someone who liked Big Rigs: Over The Road Racing. You like the game, that is great for you, doesn't change the fact it is a pile of shit.

I just watched Aliens not that long ago, and I actually just bought the Blu-ray anthology so I'll be watching it again soon.

Yes, the game captures SOME of the film's atmosphere, but that isn't enough to excuse the game for the rest of the glaring issues IMO.

I'm glad you enjoyed the game but...come on. Can you honestly say it's above a 5/10 or so?

The conversations between the marines are just atrocious. I cringed everytime they open their mouths. You know who talked like that during the movie? Hudson. You know, the guy EVERYONE was screaming at to shut the fuck up throughout the entire movie. So instead I get a game where every goddamn character is just like that. No the atmosphere we wanted captured.

A friend of mine on Steam pre-ordered it (I feel so sorry for the guy) but he talked up the MP a lot, trying to get me to buy into it (I definitely didn't). Can any current owners sum up if the MP is fun at all and maybe enjoyable later on at a $10 game deal rate?

I think I'm getting close to the ending and I can honestly give it a 7 out of 10.

I've gone back to play some AVP 2010 multiplayer. Matchmaking doesn't work, but if you use the browser you can still find some active servers.

I can give it a 6/10 and I give AVP 2010 7/10 give or take. Probably some floating margin in there on both.

YMMV obviously.

My expectations were hoping for at least a solid 8/10 game and that didn't happen and that's very unfortunate and inexcusable. I don't think that's being unrealistic or "lofty" and I suspect a lot of other people here are going to agree with me on that.

^^ Anything that would have come out past THOSE expectations would of course been shock and awe remarkable, near religious epiphany, and GOTY shortlist time.

I guess we'll never get that Aliens game just like I'll never see a really good Star Trek game. It just isn't meant to be.

TBH, I wouldn't buy it at all until we see what they are going to do in terms of patches and (I guess) DLC. If it stays as-is I would say it's hardly worth $10, even for MP.

Not modern ones, anyway. AvP and AvP 2 were both good IMO (I liked AvP 2010 also but it wasn't as good as the first ones).

As for Star Trek...Elite Force 2 was pretty sweet IMO.

I replayed the first couple marine missions of AVP 2010 in DX11, after playing it in DX9 the first time. I'd say just the first few marine campaing missions of AVP 2010 are better than the whole of A:CM. Also, in DX11 it is really gorgeous to look at. Amazing that it's already three years old.

I hope this guy Krenum is just trolling because A:CM is true garbage. Giving a game like this a 7 out of 10 makes no sense at all. The graphics, story, AI and gameplay are all sub par. The only positives are the sound effects and music. That's it! I'd also like to know why Gearbox couldn't be bothered to code this game using DirectX 11. Microsoft released the API in October of 2009!!! That's over three years ago.

Modern devs are incompetent and don't give a shit because they bend over for bucks. Not hard to understand.

It looks like gearbox milked Sega for as much cash as possible to fund BL1 and BL2 with no real intention of making A:CM.
