Sony Boss Explains Why No PS4 Shown

Sony got two hours of my time last night and I didn't even get to see the actual PS4. However, we have the specs so that works for now and there is plenty of time to show more until it launches this holiday. I'm excited for this console and I actually think the move to x86 will be a win for PC gaming as well.

Develop a game for the PS4 and new Xbox, then take that same code and move it over to PC to take advantage of even faster hardware without having to do a complete rewrite or crappy performing port.

Fine with me. It gets people to pay attention to the speaker instead of fawning over images of the product.

"something new for later"
Blu-Ray with RFID DRM on board?
It sure was a hyped up presentation.
By not showing the console they avoided all the hard physical questions about the box.
The x86 based core is interesting...

They probably didn't show it because:

A) The components don't yet fit in the case
B) The case design is not final

Considering there won't be any backwards compatibility with PS3 discs, existing PSN games or any save files, Sony seems to be doing a fair gamble.

Most likely. The demo unit is probably nothing more than a regular PC in a regular PC case running the PS4 operating system.

I've heard rumours that the 8GB of RAM was a last minute addition and that the boards had to be reworked to accommodate the change.
Could be BS though.

Sony has always been semi retarded when it comes to communication skills . Ironicly , with communication being at the forefront of this electronic generation , it really amplifies their faliures as of late .

8GB of GDDR5 is pretty impressive. You're right 'face2palm', the rumours said it would be 4GB but perhaps they were matching the Xbox's purported 8GB.

or they want to have something to show at E3

This is Sony we are talking about here so anything is possible. My gut tells me the console isn't complete yet so they couldn't show it.

I like my PS3 slim, but when I buy a new console now adays I don't want to keep the old one hooked up, so no backwards compatibility kinda sucks.

We don't.
Really, why all the fanfare for what is basically a low end gaming PC. No fancy case is going to change that, anymore than Sony can change their propensity to shoot themselves in the foot.

Yeah, and at least with a PC you can still use games you bought or downloaded a year ago, and the games can support high resolutions.

Guess that explains why I didn't find any photos after the fact, The waste of time is the same reason that I don't attend the all employee meetings at work. Why sit through all the horrid fluff for all that time when I can get a 30 second recap of the bullet points afterwards.

You would think that was true but the Xbox proves otherwise. The closeness encourages them to do even less in terms of enhancing the port.

Why didn't they show it?

Cause I'll chalk it up to "Not finished" and "We needed to be microsoft to the punch, and also keep people from buying WiiU's"

That's the real reasons.

Why all the fanfare? Because chances are it will be cheaper than an actual gaming computer and attract more customers than gaming computers do because it has an actual brand behind it.

I think it's going to do well despite the negativity in this thread.

I dont know if ill get one but I do like the fact that you can stream games to a vita or use an ipad/andoid tablet for some controller functionality. It will use home wifi so the range is the whole house and not just 20ft behind the couch (nintendo).

I think it looks nice. Right now, no physical case needs to be shown. You've been teased. You aren't buying one on looks, hell - you aren't buying one now anyway.

Price may be too high unless they can work a deal with SquareSoft to do a new PS version of Final Fantasy. Hell, if SS were to do a FF7 remake (updated music/graphics), I am sure a lot of folks would jump to it real fast. But, Killzone and the other few games made it look nice, but not a must buy for those exclusives.

They tried really hard to keep people waiting for the ps3 when the xbox beat it by a year, that didn't work. If they are trying to get people to wait and not buy wii u's, this is another horrible attempt.

Yup buying in seems to point towards the end of aftermarket software. Sad that a CO like SONY is leading gaming down the drain---thx Ill stick w/Ps3 and mod it out.

If we were talking PS4 vs the new xbox, I'd be inclined to agree with you. As it stands, the Wii U vs PS4 is a completely different race, and targets fairly different segments (yes, still gamers, but look who the audiences are).

Besides, none of the videogame companies have to do anything to get people to delay/skip buying a WiiU. Nintendo already has that covered.

wait.....Isn't 8 gigs of ram on x86 pretty much the same as 4 gigs of ram?

It'll all come out no later than E3. Yesterday was a PR and glorified prick tease to get something out there. No more. No less. It's only February.

Where was it specifically mentioned there is zero BC? I can't find it anywhere in official announcements. I get that there won't be PS2/PSx as that is kinda obvious. However it has a blu-ray player and it would make no sense that it can't play PS3 games. All I see is mention of their cloud service but no indication that it eliminates the compatibility with PS3 games. I would love to see where this was officially mentioned because that is a deal breaker for me for at least the first year until it gets some exclusives I care about.

I would love to see you build a "low end" gaming PC for the money this thing would cost with comparable specs. Also considering this thing is far more powerful than the average person's PC, it is hardly low end. It's specs nearly rival my PC which is capable of playing anything out right now on max settings without issue.

They don't have to keep people waiting to buy WiiU's, nintendo is doing well enough with that by themselves.
