Aliens; Colonial Marines a Sci/Fi L4D ?

This is Duke Nukem Forever all over again... Gearbox spent 6 years on this game and these are the results??!!?:rolleyes:

Man, the Gearbox forums are a mess. If anyone even mentions that they like the game in any way they are assaulted by a barrage of trolls and flamers and called out as being a shill or a retard.

Some quality users they've got over there...

i was so excited for this game, im a huge avp fan.
i was undecided however, was 90% sure the game would end up sucking.
glad i decided not to buy it now, very disappointed. f*** gearbox

I think in this case, the users ardently defending the game would be the trolls, since the game appears to be fairly indefensible. The bulk of users trusted Gearbox to make a good game and they didn't get it, and so they are angry. You could argue that they are taking their lost $60-$100 (depending on region) too seriously, but not that they are trolls.

But if you have played the game, and liked the game, who cares? Claiming people are wrong because they have a personal opinion that they like the game is trolling man, no question.

The fact of the matter is, no matter how bad a game is there will be some people who like it. And that's fine...calling them out as being stupid for liking it is idiotic, that's my only point.

Give it some more time and you'll start seeing an equally-vicious attack from those who like the game, who will label everyone else as a shit troll and post "haters gonna hate" everywhere. When DmC came out, there was a huge backlash against the older fans as some kind of response to the criticism directed at the new game's direction (and not just over Dante's hair).

LOL yup, sounds about right.

Well, I guess there's going to be a lot of "haters" out there for this and much...not all...much of it is well earned and justified.

I wouldn't put this down as low as DNF or Daiktana but it's a pretty damned big letdown and falls way short of a big AAA title for a huge popular franchise should look like, play like, and be like.

So I guess "haters gon hate" because that's just the way it is.

Lol I just checked out the forums for a good hour. This made me smile.

Every single person is hating on the game . LMFAO

Fail..
Possibly one of the worst game launches in recent history?

hopefully this massive fail will not mean the end of games set in the Aliens universe...that would be sad news and will cement Gearbox's name in the history books for all the wrong reasons...hopefully a developer with love of the source material and appreciation for the mythology can make a real Aliens game (Rocksteady anyone?)

LOL, now people around the place are claiming it's not Gearbox who developed this, but it was outsourced.

Sega says otherwise: Gearbox is the developer.

I wonder what type of legal actions can be taken in this regard? I think people that purchased A:CM were entitled to the truth before buying it. Not that Gearbox has a stellar reputation, but look at Timegate's resume...ughhhhh

Aliens: Colonial Marines...this generations Daikatana

Hmmm....no

Pitchford never said he was going to make any of us his "bitch" and Daikatana had absolutely zero redeeming qualities. A:CM's multiplayer may have some staying power if Gearbox is fully committed to make things right...only time will tell.

Elements of games are outsourced all the time, happens with pretty much every big game.

None. There was no false advertising, no broken promises or anything like that. Simply saying that someone produced a game and it turns out that parts were done by someone else means nothing. Because they contracted out for that work means they were still in charge of it and responsible for it. THus, legally, they still produced it.

Poor quality products != lawsuit fodder.

I say get the old Vigil games guys now at Crytek on it.

Yeah, with the exception of multiplayer in a few games I've played, the last SP campaign I remember that used outsourcing was DE:HR for the boss fights which flawed an otherwise excellent game.

Interesting, thanks for the insight. I think this is going to set a precedent with Gearbox though. Could the stigma of DNF and A:CM hamper BL3 sales or will anyone even care 2-3 years from now?

I'm surprised there's love for AvP 2010 here. That game was awful, which is all I've ever come to expect from Rebellion.

so, basically the opposite of EA forums, where any criticism is assualted by a barrage of white knights and moderators with itchy trigger fingers, and called out as being a troll or flamer. not sure which is worse...

Don't forget the account bans and having all your EA-linked games removed.

Honestly, if people expressed themselves in an angry but intelligent manner, I'd say that, still, it's the "white knights defending bad games" who are the worse of the two, as being an apologist for something that's truly sub-par and would just waste the money and time of the consumer is the worst scenario.

It's truly understandable that people are as angry and outright insulted, even just as consumers and gamers receiving any terribly made, full-priced game (never mind one in the Alien universe), as they are.

If there are people who somehow (which would baffle me) enjoy the game, then more power to 'em. But those "lashing out" should be more mature and well-spoken and, instead, make their point about not supporting a game/company who releases something like this. The opposite of the "white knights" who try to get people to waste their money and defend the purchase.

In the case of A:CM, it's so bad, that it's no longer even about the Aliens themselves, which enough people are already understandably horribly disappointed and angry about. It's the fact that Gearbox would even release such a blatantly bad game in every way.

If it wasn't for the Borderlands franchise, between A:CM and DNF, this would have buried them as a company, or damn close. It also makes me wonder just how much of a true "fan" Pitchford is of Alien(s), that he would see this game the way it is and actually think it was good, and worse, think it truly paid "homage" in the way he's touted on about, to any degree, to something he claims he loves so much.

I wonder how he's taking all of this... weeping in the corner holding an Alien action figure? Or just saying "fuck it", because he knew damn well this was shit from the get-go, like DNF. I just cant imagine that, with any functional perspectives, he truly could have thought that this was going to be the fantastic game he claimed. He said the same about DNF and talked it up like it was the new "sliced bread".

Again, I'll say, just from a creative (and fantasizing) standpoint, Visceral Games (Dead Space franchise) should have made this game. If you replace the necromorphs with Aliens, bam... there's your game, because the atmosphere, visuals and gameplay are already there. Yeah, the series has it's flaws, but there's a reason the franchise is as highly-praised as it is.

Most gamers who follow the ins and outs of the gaming news and PR should know that Pitchford is arguably the most full-of-shit developer in the industry. You cannot take one word he says to be true.

if the multiplayer is alright then i'm sold. I spent a good chunk of time on AvP even though critics and fans slammed it. It was just mindless fun. Looks like they're slamming this game too but whatever, the internet is full of haters these days and alot of noise usually from keyboard commando kids with nothing better to do than sit at home and complain.

I know, but with as adamant as he's been regarding Alien, I was hoping he wasn't full of shit as he was with DNF, which was so transparent it was laughable. He certainly has a knack for putting up a front and faking his passion and respect for shit.

It was bound to happen, wasn't it... unbelievable.

so far im enjoying the game.

anyone else locked in at 62fps yes vsync is off. using 41% of each gpu. doesnt go higher or lower then 62fps.

This game has been murdered on "Steam Community Hub" all day. There's a riot of people asking for refunds.

"Maybe Aliens: Colonial Marines would have been better as a musical?"

One reviewer claimed that there was a bait-and-switch where reviewers were shown a different version of the game, compared to the finished retail version that Joe public purchased. I have a hard time understanding that concept.

Total Biscuit was calling for a boycott on pre-ordering games. His thread is completely buried ( under the avalanche ) on Steam but...

im actaully having fun in it. i guess i had no expectation for the game.

So I got a chance to play it a bit finally. First impression is, as with others...meh.

Graphics: Could be worse, could be better. On the whole, inconsistent in that some things look pretty good and others just look like ass. No idea why. An HD texture pack would do the trick, I think.

Gameplay: Standard corridor shooter, nothing real innovative here, but I'm not sure who expected it to be otherwise.

AI: Pretty goddamn derpy, that is for sure. Like, for no apparent reason too. The Xenos do come out of walls, and down from the ceiling and shit, but then they typically just hit the ground out in front of you and then run straight at you as you shoot them in the face. Sometimes they pounce and on the harder difficulties (I'm playing on Hardened) they can kill you pretty fast, actually. But most of the time it's just run straight at you, and then derp around for a bit. Can it be fixed with a patch? Maybe, I dunno.

Animations: Not terrible for the most part, though the Xenos have some weird ones sometimes. Honestly not as big of a deal so far as people have made out.

Overall...the issue is that it just doesn't feel all that tense killing Xenos in tight spaces. As some reviews have said, they don't really feel like a threat, and I think part of it is that they just don't move fast enough. That, coupled with the derpy AI, make it feel like you're just in a shooting gallery.

Another weird issue is that it seems like normal speed and sprinting speed as the Marine is like, basically the same speed. You "sprint" but it doesn't feel like you're going any faster.

Basically, is it an amazing game so far? Hell no. But it's not a 3/10 total piece of shit either. I think 5/10 is probably about right for the SP campaign, anyway. Have not had a chance to try MP yet, but it looks to be significantly better from what I have seen.

I'd like to know how many people have played the later Brothers in Arms games for PC. The more I play of A:CM the more it shows that the technology and practices are stuck in the era of BIA.

Just played some Escape...wow, there are some MASSIVE balance issues with the Xenos. Unless I'm missing the point, it seem nearly impossible to kill the Marines whereas they can kill you in literally two shots. Basically, the games I've played so far, it's been like 200 points Marines, 0 points Xenos. And I've been on both sides...Marines always win. Xenos need a damage buff or something...even if a Marine gets downed, they can just get revived in like 3 seconds. Plus, I'm pretty sure even if you manage to kill one, they just respawn anyway.

Wall-walking feels way clunky in this game compared to AvP, and I still think Xenos move too slowly, same as in SP.

That definitely sounds legit to me. All in all, it's still Gearbox's fuckup, period. I just hope the Aliens franchise isn't killed off for good on PC. :(

Yeah, though it sounds like partially Sega's fault. Sega has fucked up a lot of things, but I agree that Gearbox was primarily responsible, if this is true. Seems like all they cared about was Borderlands and didn't give a shit about this game, despite how big of "Aliens fans" they were.

the AvP game from 2010 was pretty good and highly underrated...I just recently played it for the first time and was surprised...most importantly it got the atmosphere right...nailed the Alien and Predator movements...graphics were stunning in DX11...gameplay was average at best but the game nailed the feeling of playing as a Marine, Alien and Predator...I'm going to replay that game for my Alien fix and everyone else even remotely interested in Colonial Marines should do the same

This is what I am doing right now rather than dropping $ on the new game. Sounds like I made the right choice.... too bad. Maybe I'll pick this one up on the holiday sale for $5 later this year. ;)

I'm not sure what you're talking about, but I loved BIA:HH (the last one to come out) and it felt far and above more polished. Better texture detail as far as the "whole" game goes, better gameplay, better AI (enemies knew how to use cover, even your friendly AI and squads could use it and actually DID hit enemies, they weren't so fucking useless like in A:CM).

It feels a step ahead of A:CM imo.
