Aliens; Colonial Marines a Sci/Fi L4D ?

Oh hey, about the 40 rounds thing, someone posted over in the GBX forums, I replied, and then minutes later a GBX rep replied with:

ChrisF said:
The original Pulse Rifle is available in-game in addition to the Mk. 2.

So I guess the Mk. 2 has 40 rounds and the original is intact. Good to know.

LOL...I think Ripley melted that Xeno's ass with her flamethrower. Being that rapid fanboy that I am I prepared for the worst tomorrow, but you know what? I don't even care as long as I get to play Hudson in multiplayer while smoking Xeno's.

That being said, if you're looking for a laugh head on over to Gearbox's office forums for Colonial Marines. The crying over there is absolutely ridiculous...

http://forums.gearboxsoftware.com/forumdisplay.php?f=69

I guess they're the guinea pigs.

To their credit: Gearbox typically does a fairly good job trying to respond to issues and dealing with them. Yes, I know about the inventory issue in Borderlands 2, Plague. ;)

I'm speaking broadly.

And you guys are just shrugging off every issue with this game. It's ironic, considering every game that comes out has a minor flaw and people shit their pants about it. But in this case, there are glaring problems and people continually make excuses.

SILENCE!

BECAUSE ALIENS!

crap maybe i should of read this thread before pre-purchasing it.

It doesn't look like GOTY, that's for sure, but I wouldn't pay attention to a lot of the trolls in here bashing it before having played it. We'll know by tomorrow the reality of the situation.

I certainly wouldn't have paid $60 for it, but I didn't, so... :D

New console MP gameplay in glorious 1080P...looks like pretty damn sweet to me

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roYZJB3BT8I

That does look like a lot of fun. Only a few issues I see...one being that the Xeno animations look really funky sometimes. Maybe it's due to lag or something but they don't look fluid at all.

The other being the graphics, which aren't the worst ever but look pretty bad for a 2013 game. Also, no dynamic shadows it seems? In a game like this? Wtf.

Well, oddly, it looks far better than any of the official footage or previews by big publications such as IGN.

Visually, it looks far better than other vids, though there's definitely still some behind-the-times textures and design, and everything seems a little fat and slightly clunky; animations still look bad at times.

However, other visuals are looking a lot better, and some of the quality animations are shown here, so it's a mixed bag.

Here's single player footage by the same channel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQazTGSvwpI

Now the game has me a bit confused after watching both vids. I definitely wouldn't say there's any reason tension there, but hearing the soundscapes and music in the background of the both single and multiplayer, seeing that there are some better textures and lighting, some better animations and some of the gameplay looks half-way decent, I might be changing my opinion.

I'd like to see a little more to be sure, but now this footage is giving me hope that they didn't completely fuck up the Alien universe, one of the most "personal" of all things for me. I'm a complete Alien freak, as is my wife, who is also a hardcore PC gamer. We planned on this from the beginning, but then completely backed-off because it did honestly look like a shitty, clunky, lackluster game.

Now, I don't know, maybe it's a mix between some boring shit (which you cant deny is there) that lacks in atmosphere, and some good aspects. If good enough, I'd take the bad with the good just to be at least somewhat immersed in the Alien universe.

Objectively, that's the best response I can have, as it has been looking pretty bad in a lot of ways, but this shows some redeeming qualities. I'm still afraid to pre-order, because if it ended up sucking hard for the majority of the game, I take personal insult to that, and would have to go on a killing spree.

If I get a good shooter with tons of Aliens homages all over the place I'll be happy. I know this isn't going to be GOTY but I doubt it's going to be DNF.

That's the way I'm looking at it.

The MP stuff does look pretty good. Just like the older AvP games, you can tell playing as the Xenos will require some patience and strategy to do well, but in these vids the Xeno players are obviously just charging in repeatedly which usually doesn't work. Hopefully the maps have adequate vent ducts and stuff like that for the Xenos to take advantage of, otherwise I can see the marines doing really well just by backing into a corner.

MP will probably require quite a bit of re-balancing, as always with these games.

Seems hard to get perfect balance when you have asymmetrical sides like this.

From the gameplay I can see a lot of crying about the Aliens being underpowered I figure I'll get in and get out before the game gets balanced into poop like TF2.

Of course, that's always my attitude, though this looked to be complete shit at first. After watching the two vids on that channel, it looks quite a bit better than even the official footage, which has changed my mind to give this a chance.

I'm baffled that this quality of video and gameplay footage wasn't released by friggin' Gearbox themselves.

The atmosphere still needs to be stronger, and definitely some weak/bad gameplay elements, but the good might just outweigh the bad, fingers crossed.

Same here.

My expectations were crashed pretty low through the course of this thread so hopefully I'll be pleasantly surprised come tomorrow. That tactic has worked well for me in the past on a few games. ;)

Ha ha. Yeah, I know what you're saying. I've done/had that same experience as well and it's been the same situation with A:CM, especially given how personal the Alien universe it to me.

So, hoping for a good surprise and just said "fuck it", and grabbed a copy for my self and my wife just now. Already almost done downloading/pre-loading.

Just pay good enough homage to the Alien and have decent enough gameplay with at least some decent atmosphere... it's all I ask.

Keep in mind this is console, 360 specifically, that's what the textures look so fuskered. I would seriously think that PC will be much better off in terms of visuals, Gearbox has been pretty accommodating to PC users, hopefully A:CM doesn't break that trend...

Awesome video, the weapons sound fantastic and the combat music automatically reminds me of the danger music in Aliens. Very cool
Looks fun as hell!

Haha! Guy gets a "Badass Rank" only to be impaled moments later. Love it! :D

My only complaint would be the 3rd person mode on the Xeno side, I kinda hoped they would be first person view like in AvP. I don't need to see my character while hunting down Marines.

Truthfully the multiplayer looks like COD/BF with aliens and I'm really ok with it. I don't think an Aliens game is that hard to make. Rebellion is just a poor company period.

The obvious factor is that they made this game with multiplayer in mind and I think that's the important thing here. They did not get into this with the vague idea of making an aliens game. The took a game concept and molded it into the Aliens universe. That may not be the best way to go about it with some games/IPs but it fits this scenario. A lot of people forgot AVPI and II gained their following from the hectic multiplayer.

From the videos I'm certain I'll get $30 out of this and thats ok by me.

I keep forgetting, but does this game offer Left 4 Dead style gameplay ? Meaning CoOp my Brothers and I playing as the Marines with the computer AI the aliens, going through the single player story, just like L4D ? I hope so, I am looking for a Left 4 Dead game, but set in the Aliens world would be jizz worthy :D

Yes it does :) Probably the best feature going for it IMO.

Yeah, I am hoping that's true. We haven't seen much, if any, PC footage that I can recall.

As far as I know none of us have even played the game yet so it's kind of hard to say what "issues" there actually are with it.

I agree with you about the 40 rounds thing but I'm not going to just write the game off because of some insignificant bullshit like that.

EDIT: As for the Australia thing...it's shitty, they fucked up, but shit happens. Same thing more or less happened with Dead Island...I was pissed about it because I pre-ordered, but I gave the game a shot and it ended up being decent. Not GOTY but a fun game in the end (after some patches as well).

The Australia thing happened because the shiteaters at EB Games broke release date several days early...before Steam released it, before B&M competitors released it, before review embargo ended, before everything.

Ah, okay. So really the people on the forums complaining about it are just total morons. Thanks for clearing that up. :D

I was thinking since in Australia it's probably already the 12th, that Gearbox/Steam had fucked up.

I'm going to wait for a Steam sale...I'm a huge Aliens fan but can't bring myself to pay anywhere close to full price...here are some early reviews...I was expecting mediocre but it sounds worse...

•Games TM - 4/10: "Mechanically, the game functions, but the fun of the Aliens universe is quickly drained away by what amounts to a mundane shooting gallery through a drab and lifeless world."

•PS3gen.fr - 5/10: (Translated) "We expected a lot from this project. And unfortunately, our disappointment was all the greater

http://www.computerandvideogames.co...al-marines-early-review-scores-appear-online/

Hmm...looks like they only reviewed the SP, no MP. Plus if you read the comments it appears they weren't even accurate about some things in the review.

Still does not sound terribly good, though.

It should be available now...it has been the 12th for almost 11 hours.

Finding new vids popping up on of the singleplayer. All the bad aspects of the the game in terms of visuals, some level design, textures, animations and gameplay that have been mentioned in this thread are rather prominent.

Here's vids of the entire game by one guy of the single player (spoilers, obviously - eleven vids so half hour a piece, and that's the entire campaign):
https://www.youtube.com/user/VolitileGabe?feature=watch

It's absolutely horrible.

"a great walkthrough for a truly mediocre game. bravo for your perseverance" a comment on his last vid that I have to agree with. It takes perseverance to get through that shit.

Definitely seems like a game made for casual and console gamers, honestly. Just the way it plays and is designed. The aesthetic is sort of there. The gameplay is not.

Voice "acting" and story are absurd trash.
Animations are total garbage.
AI is almost horribly stupid.
Definitely absolutely no tension what-so-ever.

Also, something that I'm seeing that is consistently bad and immersion-breaking, is the way the Aliens run up to you when on the ground. Aliens never fucking run on two legs, and it just looks fucking stupid. They always run on all fours, though they stand up straight and walk, then never run on two legs. It's getting really annoying to watch.

For someone like Randy Pitchford who continually claims he's such an Alien freak and wants to do it justice, I cant understand why they'd not focus far more and better, and more accurate animations and just a generally higher quality game.

Well, too late now. After watching some vids that seemed to show the game exuded some redeemingly qualities, I said the hell with it, and grabbed two copies. Was a really bad move.

I'm going to really have to focus on just the Aliens themselves and alter my own perspectives psychologically to be able to enjoy being around the Aliens at all. Holy fuck, it's horrible.

Yes, it has drop in drop out coop just like borderlands 2

huh?

The thing in Australia has nothing to do with EB games. Whoever uploaded the steam version (Gearbox/Sega whoever) did so without all the files in the game. So people tried to start the game when it was released in their country, and were met with errors.

so the single player campaign is 5.5 hours?...sounds like another 'Homefront'

Some vids are actually only twenty minutes, so yeah... and aside from being absurdly short, it's just so bad in so many ways, I don't even know what the fuck hit me earlier today the way it did that made me decide to buy it, after purposely staying away from it. But, I guess I'm going to have to try to enjoy it from some perspective... a place of nostalgia, perhaps.

I'm still watching this guy's vids. I'm horrified.

Broken street date, significant discount on GMG, very late reviews being released...this smells like a steaming, ripe turd.

I'm Australian, and that's why I had it preloaded. It wouldn't let me play until it's official release. I still haven't played it and I'll have to wait until tonight to determine if there are any errors in my files.

Haven't learned much about the game but I've just pre-loaded it. I am a sucker for most things related to ALIENS.

I'm interested in single player primarily. Some of my best gaming memories are from the single player of the first two AVP FPS games on PC. ALthough I also loved the AVP2 multiplayer so much I joined a pred-only clan for a while. I thought the 2010 game was kind of lackluster, although in the end I got my money's worth out of the game for sure between the three-pronged single player campaign and the rather good multiplayer.

If there is some L4D style versus/campaign stuff in the new game, I could see that working pretty great for the ALIENS property.

The retail game comes bundled with Steamworks. Even if all the files were there, the game would not have been playable until the official release date. EB breaking the street date didn't change anything Steam-side. This has happened with previous Steamworks titles and with StarCraft II, where the game was available in stores but was not playable until the next day.

People are playing the game fine now, since it's the official day of release.

I'm kinda having a hard time understanding why 5-6 hours is "absurdly short". I'm playing through Dead Space right now, and I'm about 5 or 6 hours in and almost at the end of the game, and people raved about that game. It's short compared to a 20 hour RPG or something, but how many shooters have campaigns much longer?

Unfortunately, from both the perspectives of the Aliens universe and my/our wallet, it is exactly that.

Haven't learned much about the game but I've just pre-loaded it. I am a sucker for most things related to ALIENS.

As I am, which is actually an egregious understatement, but...

I'm interested in single player primarily.

Then you're/we're in for a serious disappointment, my friend. If you don't care about spoilers, or want to save yourself the money, go hit the link I posted a few posts back and watch the incredibly disgusting 5.5 hours of horrid gameplay from beginning to end.

If there is some L4D style versus/campaign stuff in the new game, I could see that working pretty great for the ALIENS property.

Absolutely. If someone actually fucking did it right, for once.

I'm going to play it anyway, since I bought the damn thing, thinking that what I saw this morning showed some promised. After watching a few hours of gameplay (and a few hours is already half the game) on that guy's channel, I'm just astounded at how fucking bad this turned out.

We have games like Dead Space, a completely unique IP, that combines both action and atmosphere, design and visuals, into an excellently crafted game. Next to the Alien franchise, which is never done right, and usually completely trashed in any attempts at turning it into a worthwhile horror/action game. What the hell is so difficult...

The best dev to have made this game would have been Visceral Games (Dead Space). Why did they never take it on? There's a team who knows how to make a truly tense, horrifying, well-designed and visually stunning game.

Because Dead Space is actually a great game that is an extremely well-crafted horror/sci-fi/action IP that offers quality from every perspective.

A:CM looks, plays and in design is extremely out-dated and sub-par.
