Battlefield 3 General Discussion Thread

Set up DXTORY to record straight to x264 so that you dont have to transcode giant raw video caps later, then you can document every game since filesizes will be small.
I've tried to do that, but it seems certain versions of dxtory and certain builds of x264vfw don't co operate. what are you using? I had it working on Win7 but now I'm on Win8 and cant remember what I had.

I''ve had this working before. But I had to use an older version of dxtory. Which one are you using.

edit: Got it working. Needed Zero Latency checked. So finicky.

My PC specifications etc:
Motherboard: AsRock Extreme3 Gen3
CPU: i7-2600k @ 3.40ghz
RAM: Corshair Vengeance 8GB @ 1600Mhz
VIDEO: GTX460 1GB

Now my guides will be based on my PC specs, which are pretty high, anyone with similar specs should be able to record at full HD with no fps drops at all just like me, I will include some tips for people with lower end PC's, and how they can record with Dxtory while maintaining decent quality.

This is what I used for DxTory setup: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFPqiFGeyVs

Saedrin, do you notice any FPS drops when you record?

I really like being at 120fps all the time. I'm worried if I do record my fps will drop. Is there a way to still have 120fps when recording?

I think with FRAPS I see a drop, not sure though been ages since I've tried recording.

Hey guys,

I've had a copy of BF3 i picked up not too long ago (not premium, just the base part of it).

I haven't ever logged in, but I was thinking of getting into the MP, as I haven't done any online FPS gaming in a long time. Couple of questions:

1. Will I be able to play online given that I don't have premium? are there servers for the base game?
2. Any resources for learning game mechanics? last fps I played was CS 1.6, so I don't know the game modes for BF3
3. I just picked up a 120hz monitor, so I'm hoping to run the framerate as close to that as possible. Rest of the system is a 3570k @ 4.4, 24gb ram, Samsung 840 SSD, and an Asus 7970 OC'd to the max allowed by CCC. Suggestions for the settings I'll need to use to stay around 120fps @1080p?

Thanks much.

Yes you'll have plenty of servers available to choose from even if you don't have premium.

Here are some BF3 tips: http://nightmaremode.net/2011/10/10-tips-and-tricks-to-become-a-better-battlefield-3-player-12995/ Also keep your performance expectations low for a while. You're gonna get your clock cleaned for a good while as you're going through the learning curve.

That's an awesome system but you may have to drop the AA to get at 120fps. Shiz can shed more light on this since his specs are nearer to yours than mine are. 120hz gaming FTW! :)

I'd use medium settings personally. The lower end settings still look amazing. I personally run low settings since I have a 144hz monitor and I usually peg over 200fps.

1. No you don't need premium but might want to get it bc the Aftermath DLC is pretty fun imo.

2. Search youtube. If you find a reviewer that you like, look at their other videos.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=thY_cATrzic

3. Settings. I would run Ultra Textures, Medium shadows, low effects, low mesh, high terrain quality and decoration, no antiliasing deferred or post, 16X AF, SSAO (try it an see if you like it and the performance hit isn't too much, I don't use it but I only have a 670 barely oc'ed)

4. Get SweetFx and run Ultra settings. No real performance hit and it helps clear up the game.

I'd say with the caveat of Mesh Quality. It's pretty much LOD at distance. I've recently started playing at all low, except for Mesh cranked to Ultra.

It's codec based I believe.

Try using a x264 recording codec and get back to us

Maybe 5 fps if anything. It's super small performance drop. I don't notice the difference at all. Basically recording at 1080p with Dxtory and x264 creates zero performance hit and 200mb/minute file sizes. Very very good.

Man, that's awesome news. I'm gonna download it tonight.

Yeah it was a real game changer for us, now everyone records our scrims and shit in 1080p and we can watch them all afterwards and give tips and pointers to each other.

Also saedrin, what hard drive are you recording to?

I was gonna record to a single 120gb Kingston V+200 SSD. 11gb per hour is an amazing file size. Fraps in AVI mode was 3gb for like 5 minutes I think lol.

I have an older 1tb WD black. Dxtory is set to 75mb/s write speed max, but it doesn't get nearly that high.

Its a lot of fun to review the videos months down the road even after youve burned out from the game. After a few months break its usually one of the old recordings that amps me up to get in again for a bit.

You dont need to record to an SSD. Most spinners will be fine.

This is good advice - Mesh should always be Ultra, even if it has to be at the expense of pretty much everything else.

I can't wait for CTF, brings me back to my old COD2 CTF (rifles only days) man I miss that game. Need to install it again.

Game was the shit!.. Played it all day. practically everyday..

CTF is just the gametype I need to really get into the game. I dislike the meaningless feel of conquest; people just run around in circles capping and uncapping flags and there aren't any good defensive battles because there aren't natural defensive positions. I just don't get much of a feeling of accomplishment at all.

Rush brings that into the game, but the maps are just a bit too small. Hopefully CTF has full sized maps and good defensive abilities around the flag(s?), but still allows for multiple attack strategies to get it. Seriously though, the idea of an armoured column riding support around a flag carrier gets me all tingly.

Another great scrim against Crotan and his FLOT guys. Very intense.

Lots of back and forth and some really good shooting from both sides.

WSI vs FLOT Seine Crossing

Watched the first 10 mins of this and I think you've spawned on squad mates maybe twice!

I'm by no means pro or anything but I do tend to play with a group of people 4-6 sometimes. I've found it easier rather than saying "1 person stay, 1 person goto C" you actually be more specific YOU stay, YOU goto C. I try to not be vague, but as direct as possible.

I also noticed you guys have names for places. I"ve been looking for a fairly "standard/well known" labeling system for places on the various maps.

There are a few guys in our group that also get a little too excited when calling things out. Who literally yell "ouch" and shit when getting shot. Or repeat the things they say 5 times. THEY'RE OVER THERE, THEY'RE OVER THERE, THEY'RE OVER THERE!!! Extra chatter on the comms bugs me to no end.

EDIT:

I'm going through your other videos, this made me LUL

Couldn't find my install disc/key so I went ahead and just ordered another copy of COD2 for $9 lol.

There's still a couple populated rifles only servers.

Now I just need to get Alchemy setup to get EAX3 working. Game sux on miles 2d positional.

I've never played this game. Does it run alright on a Core 2 Duo?
Will be very choppy.... you should def look to getting a quad core if you want to play BF3.

think I still have my cod2 but the last time I tried to play it, the game acted like it was on crack speed wise. Threw me off.

CTF looks intriguing, but Air Superiority looks like a turdier version of tank superiority, which was already a giant turd

Don't like it, don't play it. I'm sure there are air nuts foaming at the mouth about it, and I'm pretty sure I've heard people saying they wanted something similar through the last decade of battlefield titles.

I'm pretty stoked for CTF, air superiority I'll never touch unless I have to play it to unlock a weapon/ammo like scavenge.

Will air superiority be 64 players? Didn't see anything either way about that.

I also wonder if there will be any ground AA.

I guess if it's a fly-fest it'll be kinda like Star Wars with gravity.

I agree with Crotan - I'll stay away except to complete assignments/medals. (like I did with CQ and Scavenger mode)

I can see it being a lot of fun depending on how many skilled pilots there are. If you're always getting shot down before you have a chance I won't be playing it.
