Dear person that always posts pictures of food on Facebook / Twitter / Instagram, restaurants in New York City are sick of your crap. :D

If you’re one of the thousands of people who snap pictures of your food and instantly share them on social media, you might be surprised to learn that some restaurants are now banning photos of their food. And it is something that has gone from awkward to mainstream, via Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Taking pictures of your food ... another way people can show how self-absorbed they really are.

“It can shatter the experience when you’re asking your fiancé to marry you, and a flash is going off at a table next door,” said David Bouley, owner of Bouley Restaurant.

...

“Somebody doesn’t like a restaurant, somebody has a grudge against the restaurant, they can manipulate the food,” he said.
Both are very rare situations. They are just making up excuses so they don't sound like complete jerks.

Only have done this once, and it was with sushi for a table of 8 VERY hungry friends, one who got 6 rolls alone. It was a spectacular feast and the presentation was amazing, they put color changing LED's in the garnishes, birds made of different fruits, awesome placements of the sushi and the color made cool designs. It was a work of art.

For what some of the meals cost the restaurant should throw in the picture as part of the service.

Sounds like some restaurants may just want to control how the public is allowed to see their dishes, out of embarrassment over what they display on their website and what it really looks like for the customer.

Now, I could understand them saying no FLASH photography, but pulling out your iPhone and taking a quick pic is not a big deal and I would certainly just bring my business elsewhere if the waiters got all puffy about it.

Crazy to me how this even got to be a problem.

"Dear people, I and 99% of others don't give a shit about what you're eating".

Lol I don't personally take pictures of my food, but if I want to, I will do it as I damn well please. I'm the one paying for my food and I can do whatever the F I want to with it. And IF they touch me or try to confiscate my phone, they can expect retaliation on my part.

while i don't care about seeing pics of people's food --- I do care about your freedom to take a picture of it.

Would a car dealership ban you from taking pics of a car you might buy? If you can't take take a pic of the food going into your body, will you soon not be allowed to take a pic after it's left? Thus rendering sites like ratemypoo.com totally illegal? lol

Any business owner that had the balls to go up to a customer (who hasn't paid yet) deserves getting shafted on the bill.

The only good reason for a restaurant to do this, is if their food is shit... Otherwise I'd take all of the free advertisement I could get.

I take pics of my food all the time... not to share it online, but more like a catalog of some of the different dishes I've had. These restaurants can suck the big one11!1!!

People do this for yelp reviews all the time. It is a good idea.

What if I am eating out for a special occasion and I take a picture of someone eating the food?

You can always spot the classless assholes by who has their phone out as soon as the plate hits the table. If I'm paying hundreds on dinner for two, which is the price range of the restaurants in question, I don't want someone having a photo session next to me.

That being said it is rare for me to see people doing this, in these kinds of restaurants, so this can't be inconveniencing that many people.

Another feel good rule from the douches of society.

and by next week, Bouley will be providing a photo to customers with the check.
For a nominal fee I'm sure!

Although I'm with the group with unless your food is a work of art, don't take a picture of it just because it looks elegant compared to those bricks of ramen you eat 3 days a week.

Taking pictures of food is very useful. Have none of you used restaurant catalog mobile apps? Lots of them have real pictures of menu items so you can get an idea of what you will be getting before choosing that particular restaurant or that particular dish.

Urbanspoon is a good example of a crowdsourced app that has restaurants listed with real images of the menus and real local pricing along with real pictures of the dishes.

“Somebody doesn’t like a restaurant, somebody has a grudge against the restaurant, they can manipulate the food,” he said.

You mean, like how they try to make their food look better than how it actually is?

If you're paying for hundreds on dinner for two (and alcohol wasn't a majority of that check) you do belong in a different class of douche baggery than those who take photos of said food :D

The only time I've taken a picture is when I ordered a vodka mixed drink and it came in a "glass" the size of a fishbowl. It was glorious.

$150 pre tip, no alcohol, is not at all uncommon at a michelin restaurant. Not sure how eating at a nice restaurant is douchey.

"Our food is excellent!

...but we don't want anyone to see it."

Red flag for any restaurant. Dumbasses.

Yes, people must be douchebags if they make enough money to eat in top-quality restaurants. Down with the bourgeoisie, er, I mean, the 1%!

Oh...and what's the most you've ever spent on a video card or processor?

If you feel strongly against it, then simply don't go. I doubt they will miss you, but if enough people feel this way they will be threatened to shut down the restaurant or allow customers to take photos. Either way, you can do something about it besides complaining and getting an upset tummy.

If my mon gets something cool on her plate shes going to take a picture. Her thing is so she can remember it later or show us at home what was on her plate. She doesn't have a facebook account or pretends to be a resteraunt blogger.

She does ready out at very nice resteraunts quite a bit, her favorite being ruths cris.

I took some pictures of food I got in Russia, only because there was so much food for so cheap.

On most of the menus the weight (in kg) of the main course was right on the menu, usually at least 400 g and some were over 1 kg.

I dated a woman that always did this on our dates.
Very self-absorbed with everything she did, and had to post it on Instagram and Facebook.

Needless to say I'm dating other people now.

Oookkaayy...So I can still say "such and such a restaurant gave me food poisoning", or "this place serves their food like a cat puked on my plate" then, but a picture is a no go?

Honestly, I do not understand the obsession of taking pictures of your food The only time my wife will do it is when we are eating somewhere nice or different and the food is special. Otherwise I rather eat my food than take pictures of it.

The restaurants complaining about this must be shitty restaurants because that is free advertising for them like others had pointed out. Weird.

When traveling, I like to take pictures of great food and send it to my wife who is at home eating hamburgers and a bag of chips. Not classy places, though. I don't want to ruin the experience for other people. But, myself at a decent place.

Maybe the restaurants will take a queue from the MPAA and RIAA and just say that they are granting you a license to consume the food, but they really still own it, so they can dictate what you do with it.

This policy sounds like the attitude of a party-pooper. Imma take pics when I feel like it.

Pretty good comparison... an item that will leave your bowels in less then a day (hopefully) vs something you'll be using on a daily basis for 6 months to 3 years.

That said, if you feel like blowing enough money on a meal that could have fed a family for a month... that's your prerogative. It doesn't make it any less wasteful or extravagant. In the end though... it's your damn money... and nobody's opinion (other then your own) should matter in that regard.

A piece of electronics primarily used for playing video games versus a meal prepared by top-grade chefs in an upscale, high-class environment. Get a grip. If people will spend 500-1000 bucks on a video card or a processor, then call people douchebags for spending three figures on fine dining, they're oblivious hypocrites.

Wasteful? Spend thousands of dollars on electronics to play video games, many of which are available on systems that cost far less. Plenty would call that wasteful. Spend...well, any amount of money on a range of Apple products. Plenty would call that wasteful. Spend six figures on a sports car that takes people's breath away. Plenty would call that wasteful. Why are tech people so goddamned myopic?
