With all the talk of next gen consoles which is all well and good but how many of you have done back to an NES or SNES?

I've got a Sega Saturn begging to be played with, however, not sure how much trouble it would be to get the composite cables to work with my LCD monitors ports or if it'd even be worth the trouble.

Retro, no. But I'm in no hurry. I waited a year after 360 release and again for PS3. I got plenty of games to keep me busy now, never mind the ones coming.

Walked in here thinking this was a stealth Retro Studio thread. :(

Well, I constantly play PC Engine Super CDrom (TurboGrafx-CD) games on my computer.
Lords of Thunder is the game I play, maybe once a month. (I live for scrolling shooters)

CD audio in 1993 with a sick Metal soundtrack. This game does not age.

Hooking up the real system to my HDTV is a no no. RF switch, upscaled to 1080p? Oh God, no.
I'll take Magic Engine and 2X Sai filtering, instead. (Plus the Turbopad's don't last very long. Better not use it at this point, since its near impossible to find a replacement)

Nothing like the games of days gone by. I loved the SNES and many many older PC games. I still play UT99 from time to time...

I go back to the NES and SNES all the time. 5 hour sessions of Smash TV and Super Mario Kart ftw. When I get my N64 back, we'll be playing Goldeneye for about 12 hours.

I always liked Gates of Thunder more. Also liked it's music more ;) I really don't understand how Lords was supposed to be the sequal. Two different worlds.

:)

Both are exceptional titles and both favorites of mine. Gate of Thunder was the most amazing game I saw growing up. Played a demo station for the first time at a huge electronics store called Incredible Universe, that doesn't exist anymore. Donkey Kong Country had just come out, so I think that was 93', a lone TurboDuo sat unplayed in a corner. They had various console demo areas. Pretty much everything out at the time. SNES, Genesis, Neo Geo, and.... People were crowding around a Jaguar, and ignoring the graphical barrage of sprites, colors and crystal clear CD audio that only the TurboDuo was capable of, at the time. It was sad, but I took full advantage and familiarized myself with the 5 in 1 disc they had going there. Who am I kidding? I didn't play anything else on that disc. Gate of Thunder was the most awesome game I had ever seen.

I still play Lords more. But I also play guitar. Ahhhh.... now it makes sense. The soundtrack is in my car. Now it really makes sense.

This is like that Super Mario World is better that Super Mario 3 is better than Super Mario World, thing. Ask me which one I like better next month :)

The retro never stops in my house got new and old consoles all over my house. 5 TV's in my house have different consoles hooked to them.

Make sure you check the "HDD" battery is still good!

Though I just use the disks in an emulator...

I missed out on all the SNES classics back in the day (had a Genesis). Been going through some of those. Currently on ftrst time play through of Zelda A Link to the Past and at the point to get the last crystal.

Other retro games I've beat in the last couple of years

Metroid 2 / Super Metroid / Metroid Fusion / Metroid Zero Mission
Super Mario 2 / 3 / Lost Levels

My PS3 spends more time as a Sega Genesis Emulator thanks to the Sega Genesis Collection, then it does playing PS3 games. ~grin~

pointless. go retro with your smartphone or tablet

It's just not the same as gaming on a real system. I have emulators on my Nexus 7 and I kinda prefer to use the actual console..

What games are you guys playing?

Is this a sequel to the ThuderForce series of games?
I LOVED those.

That is one thing I hate about console gaming today, there are just no games I know of that took games like these to the next level and nailed it.

I'm a fighting game fan and I find myself still enjoying the classics as much as the ones out today. The old SF2-based games, Tekken 3, Darkstalkers, Fatal Fury, etc.

Anyone still gaming on a 360 or ps3 are going retro. What are the like 15 years old now?

I'm always in a Retro gaming mood. Right beside my computer, I have my 27" CRT to play all my old consles (SNES, N64, Gamecube, PS2, Dreamcast, and the old Xbox).

Plus I have a VGA to S-video converter connecting my pc to my tv for gaming on Mame. :D

A friend gave me his Gamecube before moving out of the country along with Wind Waker. Next I picked up a handful of games for $1-$3 each: Metroid, Rogue Leader, Wave Race, Sonic Heroes. And a friend gave me some older games he didn't play anymore: Tales of Phantasia and Skies of Arcadia among them.

Also have a Dreamcast in a box in the garage. Plan to hook it up to PC monitor with vga cable soon.

About a month ago I played through Link to the Past for the first time. Great game.

I was actually thinking of getting an old CRT for just this purpose.
You can actually get them at goodwill and such for under $10.

Dooooo it!

The crt is perfect for the older games.
I bought this crt probably 6 to 8 years ago. It's unfortunately degraded slightly because my parents had to borrow it when their own tv blew up from a power surge. But I got it back about a month ago and now I'm enjoying classic games in all their glory.

I've tried using plugins and scalers for mame while playing on the lcd monitor but it just doesn't substitude a real crt.

My dreamcast, NES, SNES and N64 get plenty of usage here and there, just depends on the mood im in.

back when I had friends 8 player saturn bomber man was never off the table.

I had bomber man on the original game boy, that sure was incredibly frustrating.

Also back when you HAD friends? What the hell does that mean. Are you implying you don't have friends anymore? :p

Yep exactly what I'm implying. Moved to new city.

Saturn bomberman is so badass and I have no clue why all the newer ones after it suck so bad. I frequently had more than 4 people at my house and most multiplayer games like Mario Kart max at 4 players....but bomberman could go up to 10, though I normally played with 8. No game since can handle 8 players offline.

Unfortunately no, Technosoft, the creators of the Thunderforce series was pretty much a Genesis developer until Thunderforce 3? (maybe 4, dont remember) that was made for SNES. Thunderforce 5 was the last title in the series. I have the PSX copy and I believe it was also ported to Saturn.

The 'of Thunder' series is strictly Red/Hudson Soft, or shall we say, exclusive to the PC Engine Super CD (TurboGrafx-CD).

If you like Bomberman, you should give '94 a try. For as long as I can remember, I heard its the definitive version, not counting the 8 player mode of course. But then again, perhaps my memory is hazy, that was a bit before the saturn version, that I personally have never played. Last time I gave '94 a go, we had a 3 player match that went on for 3 hours. Intense.

I second the Bomberman recommendations, and heartily recommend Bomberman 64. 3D Bomberman is so amazing, even if you only have 4 players. RIP Hudson Soft :(
