All you 3DS owners, the demo for the new Fire Emblem game hitting stores next month is up on the 3DS store for download. Imma grab it and likely preorder from Amazon if I like it. I'm a huge fan of the Advance Wars/Fire Emblem series of games (both are the same pretty much. Advance Wars focuses on military units and Fire Emblem focuses on more traditional fantasy warfare units like wizards, swordsmen, knights, and mounted Pegasus warriors.)

Anyway, the expectation is there that this will be a very good game and I have yet to be disappointed by a Fire Emblem game. For those of you who like Fire Emblem but do not own a 3DS, fear not, they are making a Fire Emblem/3DS bundle available in March-ish that you can pick up if you want.

Anyway, download the demo and let me know what you think. I will post my impressions tomorrow.

I'll bite.
Not really into RTS games, but from the screenshots I've seen, this looks exceptional.
Downloading....

It's not a real time strategy game, it's a turn based strategy game. I'm not trying to be anal, I'm just making sure anyone else reading this thread understands the distinction. This game is turn based goodness and basically you and your chosen units will be placed in different situations and you will have to figure what units and strategies to employ to win the scenario. But essentially all the action is turn based.

I recommend YouTube videos. They have one of 20 mins of gameplay up.

My bad, you are correct. Turn based, like Shining Force. (and Devil Survivor. HA!)
So I gave it a go last night, just the first stage, it's pretty cool. What I did like is how you get stat bonuses when you have units adjacent to your position (not diagonal tho). Didn't play the 2nd stage yet, as I went to bed shortly after, but plan on giving it a go later today.

OH yeah, also, the 3D videos are amazing. AMAZING. I have not seen this quality before, the 3D is perfect. Absolutely perfect. Wow.

I just played the demo and I was blown away. Yes, the bonus you get from being on a square adjacent to an ally was put in there on purpose, it's a new addition to the series. Should make for some interesting strategies later on.

I was very pleased with the demo and the cut scenes are the best I have seen on the system!!

What all games do you have for the 3DS right now? I haven't bought anything new in a year or so.

I have Zelda 3DS, Mario Kart 7, and Devil Survivor Overclocked.

Haha, me?

Oh, I have.....

Street Fighter IV 3D
Ridge Racer 3D
Steal Diver (Fucking mistake, and I did spell STEAL on purpose )
Ocarina of Time 3D
Resident Evil Revelations
Mario 3D Land
Mario Kart 7
Devil Survivor Overclocked (which I haven't played in months, hence the "ha!, on previous post)
Kid Icarus
Cave Story 3D

eShop:

Zen Pinball (My favorite 3DS game. In fact I stopped buying retail games for a few months because of it.)
Pushmo

3D classics:

Kirby's Dreamland
Xevious
Excitebike

I know I'm forgetting something, probably more than one. Can't be helped, I'm at work right now and don't remember all of them.
Believe it or not, what I am waiting for next, patiently, is the 3D classics release of SEGA's SPACE HARRIER (Thats right, confirmed last week or something on GAF)

Did you like Resident Evil Revelations? Was it worth it?

I downloaded the demo for Metal Gear Solid Snake Eater 3DS, and I may purchase it off Amazon.com tonight if I like the demo. I never had a chance to play Snake Eater back in the day, believe it or not.

It's quality, best RE from Capcom since 4, for sure, but I haven't really gotten far in it. I recommend it if you can find it on a sale somewhere. I have MGS3 subsistence on PS2, was interested in the 3DS one, but dat frame rate...... ughh It's a pretty bad port IMO. I'd try the demo and see if it bugs you like it does me.

About fucking time. This game was released in Japan last April. 10 fucking months to translate.

Feb 04 - Fire Emblem
Feb 26 - Etrian Odyssey
Feb 28 - Phantasy Star online

February is looking to be a busy month for me I wish this was already out as I just passed Persona 4 and have nothing to play.

I disagree that Advance Wars and Fire Emblem are "both are the same pretty much" because they are very different aside from being turn based tactical games.

They are both well made, so most fans of turn-based tactical combat will like both. However, there are some games in the Fire Emblem series I dislike, whereas I've been happy with all the Advance Wars games.

and vice versa for me. I love all the fire emblem games and dislike Advanced Wars despite them being well made and me loving trpgs.

I have owned both games and they are very similar as they are made by the same guys and the gameplay and concepts are the same pretty much, the only real difference is the units and story/settings. But other than that, unlike you both, I have played all games in both series that made it to our shores and I enjoyed them both.

the only real difference is the units and story/settings.

  • You can't build units in Fire Emblem
  • Units don't have randomly allocated stat points in Advance Wars
  • You don't have an inventory in Advance Wars
  • You don't capture cities and factories in Fire Emblem
  • When a unit is hurt in Fire Emblem it still does full damage to enemies, when a unit is hurt in Advance Wars it does less damage
  • There are typically more units on a map at any given time during an Advance Wars game
  • Almost all Fire Emblem games have permanent unit death, so you usually restart any battle where a single unit dies. Advance Wars has no named units, so it doesn't matter if any particular unit dies.
