SimCity V (2013) - screens/artwork and information

Did it ever say how large the size of the regions are? Are they large enough to handle [H] ?

from what ive read, regions go up to 16 cities.

add me on origin, ive already got it pre-orderd.

wildace is my origin id it has a BF2 SMAW Soldier as the profile pic.

im either insomnibyte or insomnibyte101 now, lol ;) add both!!!!!

I put in my pre-order last week!

I'm definitely getting Sim City V. The graphics look amazing and from what I've seen so far, the gameplay appears to be the same.

it's nothing like traditional simcity if you've been paying attention to any of the press on gameplay mechanics. not necessarily a bad thing, but if you're looking for the old zoning management you won't be finding that here. all of this was apparently ditched for more simplified sims/societies like building and aoe mechanics.

see i didnt get that vibe at all from any of the videos.

the game still has zones.

and if you make a city that is self sufficient you will need to manage your zones properly to keep your industry, residential, commercial zones happy.

sure alot of the videos focus on showing off the modular services and buildings but the game still has the zones like the older games. and the AOE effects of services are gone they are now city wide.

im sure this isnt the only thing missing but prob the biggest change from prev. sim games is that you dont have to manage the water pipes any more since they are tied to the roads.

Actually, the biggest change it that you cannot alter the landscape what-so-ever, which is what ruined it for me, and countless other people.

Though they gave reason for this, to me and a lot of other people, it completely ruins the game. Creating an interesting landscape was part of the whole dynamic and aesthetic in Sim City 4, and no matter how they [EA] spin it, it's just a bad decision.

Otherwise, I would have been all over the game.

just opens they way for a terraformer expansion down the road yeah it sucks its gone but i can live without it for awhile assuming there are alot of regions to play in.

but they will need to bring it back eventually

Yeah, if they're looking to milk everyone for money as usual, I'm sure they're release such an expansion.

Also, there's a laundry list a mile long of unattractive things about the game, all of which have been compiled here: http://sc2013thedeception.blogspot.com/.

I've read about them all in places, but only recently found that blog with the entire list. Who would tolerate even half of that?
Everything from the always-on connection and not being able to save to your hard drive, to a lot of horrible gameplay/building mechanics.

Much of what's on that list is what's keeping me from buying the game, which I otherwise would probably enjoy.

i dont care about any of those things listed

The not being able to play offline does kind of bother me because I don't always have great internet on the road but we will see how big of a deal this will really be.

I don't see why, as some of those things could adversely affect gameplay, and there are already some seriously bad changes to the gameplay as it is.

It's your prerogative, but there are even some bad in-game design choices, like certain areas that you simply cannot build in, the way certain features just cant be put together, and issues like always-on, but worse, not being able to save anything to your own hard drive...? That's ridiculous.

Biggest issue I learned from that link is the city size. They're freaking small. Essentially, the endtire 12-city regions are the same as 1 city in standard SimCity or CitiesXL.

how can i take that blog seriously..? these are just video games man.

this dude has made a blog about a sim city game. that means he either has way too much time on his hands or he has way too much time on his hands.

let the game just be what it is, if it changes it wont be because of this thread or that blog :)

So, "I don't care that you don't like this game, that you are talking about it, in a thread about it, on a gaming forum, so stop."?

you're putting words in my mouth, probably why you edited the quote. stop assuming so much man.

there is a lot of nit-picking and hate in these forums dude. im sure this will be a great game.. will it have flaws yeah dude probably. but if you dont like a game that you havent played enough to make a blog about it? idk i think you got some troll blood brotha!

games serve what purpose to you ? entertainment. this game will still be fun despite those flaws listed in that blog to about 99%. in fact the dude above would probably still be entertained, but hes not gonna buy it probably for some other silly reason

Haha, no the edit was for the eyeroll.
But nonetheless, complaining about someone's complaining on the internet is non productive.

On-topic: has there been any ability so far to convince an EA game that it is connected to Origin? Or third party servers etc? (NOT talking about piracy here, fyi!!!)

You need to relax and stop making insane assumptions. I edited what you said to address a general point. Nor am I "hating" on anything, simply disappointed by what EA has done, and shocked that some people who into a particular game, and understand what this game's serious shortcomings are, would not be bothered by such.

I'm not "trolling" anything, man. I'm too old for that shit, nor am I that kind of person. That's just your perception.

It's not my blog either, "brotha", so again, you're the one making rash assumptions. I just found the damn thing last night when looking for what features were being/not being included in the final game.

Yeah, there is too much hating around here. I've been here longer than you think to see it, but I'm not the one "hating", nor making almost psychologically disturbed assumptions about what someone else is saying.

I'm voicing my opinion, and I've said nothing unreasonable. I wanted SC5, but there are far too many serious bad design and even "mechanical" issues with the game that I cant understand people would not care about in general, never mind being a fan of the series.

Some of it looks like a blast, a lot of fun, and I'd like to play it, but the negatives outweigh the positives way too far with too many important issues. So, I've been on the fence for quite a while about it.

Games server what purpose to me? Jesus. Could you make this more convoluted than it needs to be? Go see my other post in another thread about pre-ordering games. Yeah, it's about entertainment, hence why I don't even wait for sales. However, how entertaining is it going to be if the online shits-out, or all your saves are deleted and cannot be recovered because they're not on your or HDD, or even if it ends up just being extremely limited in terms of design?

Man, talk about assumptions. Christ.

I'm going to wait until modding is made available. I know the developers have stated modding will be available; however, I don't think EA is going to let that happen for a very long time to ensure EA can milk people from DLCs first.

I still play SC4 and its one of the best from the series (behind SC2000). I tried Societies and quickly delete all remnants of it from my system.

WHat did you think of Cities XL 2012?

i know there are people playing battlefield 3 after a month that lets you work around using origin

This is a dangerous road to go down with EA.

I assumed BF3 would of course ( being a modern FPS game ) would get a proper VOIP down the road. This has not happened since its October 2011 release date.

I will probably buy it... 1-2 years after release, i don't buy incomplete games anymore, it's becoming the new normal.

i honestly never expected EA/DICE to get proper voip in bf2 since most clans/teams would use their own voip software like mumble/ventrilo but it was a really big oversight when it came to public games. for all the hoopla around EA saying the PC was the main platform for BF3 i knew differently the moment i got invited to the BF3 alpha that it was built around the consoles.

so many bad decisions on EA's part they have to be taking notes eventually they should learn from their mistakes.

as for terraforming in sim city i can really see that implemented either with an expansion/dlc or as part of the mod tools (they said they do plan to support modding some time after release) so even if we cant free form carve the land ingame maybe when the mod tools are out we can use a grey scale terrain map imported into a region and set up city zones in the places we want them. sorta like i did for making custom maps in BF1942-BF2.

there are some things they will have to work out when it comes to editing the terrain. since this is a multi player game now, everyone has to be able to get the mod from some where so they would need some sort of distribution system sorta like steam workshop and when you get invited or join a friends region it prompts you to auto download the mods needed to take part in the region.

They can say it was "techincal reasons" all they want - but I'm betting the main reason that such BASIC features were left out was so they can re-introduce them down the road and milk another couple of million out of the player base.

Just as expected EA has raped and pillaged a once fine sim game. I find it amazing they take such huge leaps backwards and think it will fly. Sim City 4 was released pretty much exactly 10 years ago - a decade ago we were able to terraform, save games to the HDD, and create mega cities.

So after 10 years of hardware advancement, processing power increase, and tons more memory, we get left worse off than a decade ago?

With the way things are shaping up - I'll just wait a year till all the features are released, packaged together, and hacked so I can play offline.

I'd have happily paid full price if they made the new Sim City have some of the BASIC features of the old one. Now they get none of my money -- die in a fire EA.

since this is a multi player game now...

I don't know if anyone has "called out" this statement, which you've made countless times, but let's just clarify this:

It's not a multiplayer game.

It's a feature in the game that is optional, but no one should be treating it as a multiplayer game, including EA, and that's the problem. They're way too focused on the multiplayer aspect, and forcing it down people's throats.

It's also their excuse for using cloud saving, which is also their excuse for the small city size, which is all a complete load of horse shit.

They're a multi-billion dollar company who are more than technically capable of creating/handling the tech needed to support larger cities. So they can spew all the technical bullshit jargon they want about it, but if you've half a brain, understand what both the tech and EA themselves are capable of, you understand it's all exactly just that: bullshit.

I'm a huge fan of the SC franchise. I want nothing more than for SC5 to be all it's capable of being, and despite my hate for EA themselves, I'm never jaded by anything. I'm objective regarding the situation, to the point that I'm actually still on the fence about buying SC5 if it actually will have anything fun to offer, because that's what life is about: enjoying yourself.

However, you need to stop being such an apologist for EA, to the point that you might as well work for the damn company. Know what you're talking about before continually making statements about both the game itself and EA, that are nothing more than hyperbole and/or you eating-up the nonsense EA throws out at people that is all so transparent, that it both makes me sick and makes me laugh at the same time.

Also, from another perspective, there may be people that are genuinely a little naive, and when hearing things like "it's a multiplayer game", and "you cant build large cities because EA can't figure out a way to handle the tech to support such" (as utter joke, one that's not funny), you're just giving the wrong impressions.

Sim City 4 was released pretty much exactly 10 years ago - a decade ago we were able to terraform, save games to the HDD, and create mega cities.

So after 10 years of hardware advancement, processing power increase, and tons more memory, we get left worse off than a decade ago?

^^ Point made right there, regarding one of the biggest issues I'm talking about, and if anyone is stupid or simply naive enough to buy into EA's bullshit, they need to wise-up, or at least stop spreading misinformation based on their own jaded perspectives and lack of understanding of the situation.

Sorry, man. Don't mean to come-off like a dick about it, but it's getting seriously annoying, all the excuses, misinformation and such an apologist attitude for what's clearly bullshit on EA's part.

Was anyone able to play the beta over the weekend? If so, what were your thoughts? Any hints you can drop on how performance was?

Played a couple cities, the 1 hour limit per city didn't let you get past the basic buildings (and a lot of the higher up government buildings were not enabled).
The UI - both in how you build and how it communicates the workings of the city (traffic, power, water, sewage and everything else being simulated by the game) shows a decade well spent. It's clear, well presented and intuitive.

The city size is a turn off so far (but not a deal breaker for me), they're trying to make each plot a more unique experience through the city specialization (big player placed businesses that can vary the entire focus of the city), but only casinos were in the demo, and you couldn't get all that far down the progression in the hour limit so I have no idea if that's going to pan out or not.

I'm not sold on building what are basically sub-burbs, when Sim City 4 did the metropolis so wonderfully. There's clearly a lot more happening under the hood here to make it a living city and that's a neat thing to see. My concern is, if the city specialties aren't interesting, and if cultivating higher density buildings isn't interesting: you will run out of things to do very quickly on these small city plots.

I had no issues with performance, ran it on an i5-2500 / GF 460 at 1920x1200 with high (but not max) settings. It looked very good, ran smooth. Obviously the demo is a single city plot and at the demo's time limit you're at less than 30k residents so that's a far cry from running a mature city in 16 city region.

So I see one of the pre order options has some extra content included, like fancy railways or something. Any idea if we'll be able to buy this later, separately?

Don't fall for the age old trick -- it's EA, you will be able to buy any and all "exclusive" content in some super mega DLC pack 6 months later.

for mass effect 3, you can upgrade from the normal version to the digital deluxe by paying the difference, so if you wait and don't want the city sets right away and want them at a cheaper price you can just wait on it.

so even if you buy the game from amazon, you can upgrade to digital deluxe later within origin.

right now its $20 difference between the normal and digital deluxe but like mass effect 3 which is only $10 now (it use to be $20) the price will go down for the upgrade.

I personally cannot wait for this game. Preordered it already. It looks like alot of fun despite the smaller city size, DRM and the origin requirements. It will be fun to build out a regions with my wife and other friends.

I dont care about having to always be online since the only place I play games is at home with a great connection.

I don't care about the game running through Origin since I have it installed for BF3 too.

I don't care about the small city size. It will be fun to build specialty cities in a region that all work together. I am sure that over time the city sizes will be increased once EA evaluates the use of resources after launch.

I will still be able to get hours upon hours of entertainment out of this game and I will be able to enjoy something else with my wife,

I wish there was not so much negativity in the forums when people have not even had the chance to play the full game yet.

lol

The only resource EA will be evaluating is how much money flows into their coffers. Why invest money on real content when they can have a few interns package up DLC and make buckets of cash for next to nothing in development costs?

I am pretty sure they are concerned about money flow also considering they are a business who's model is to probably make money. Can't blame them for that.

WADR, the same could be said for any positivity (see: DIII). All we have to go by is what they have told us and a one hour demo.

CANT WAIT!!!!!!

i don't like it being grayed out in My Games =[

I am pretty sure they are concerned about money flow also considering they are a business who's model is to probably make money. Can't blame them for that.

And that's what is wrong with the industry. Their product is designed to maximize profit, not to make a legitimately good game....and people like you defend it as being "ok".

Enjoy your $100+ worth of DLC. Enjoy modding being extremely limited. Enjoy your shallow, compartmentalized game. Enjoy having to pay a subscription just to play 5 years from now.

Ok I have been really jonesing for some simcity 5 so I have been playing 4 recently. While 4 is ok, 5 is so much more ahead of the game its not even funny. Plus it doesn't help that 4 CTD's every time I play it.

Wow, the more I read about this the less interested I am in it. So much loss of control from previous SC's. The lack of large cities was a killer for me, but lack of terraforming is pretty bad too. Plus, looking at screenshots, the "in between" zones between cities in the region looks totally bizarre and out of place.

This was the one game that I thought might make me rethink my general avoidance of Origin, but I am not even sure I would buy this on Steam now. It might just make me angry just to see how they've distorted a series I loved.
