Accessing Windows Server 2012 Server Pool Shares

Hey there,

As often said...long time lurker. Recently installed a copy of WS2012 Datacenter I received to play with and learn more about. I have pretty much zero Windows Server background knowledge (I don't count WHS...which I have running as well).

So, my question...I created a Storage Pool, and then a couple Volumes, and then Shares.

My embarrassing noob question...how do I access these Shares?

I can locate the server on my network, and know the IP address of it.

I created a User account so that I don't need to use the Admin account for general use.

My goal:
Access the Share I created from my MacBook Air so that I can read/write files from it.

Thanks in advance for tolerating my WS "noobness."

Not sure how to access it from a mac, but on a windows box you can just run \\%servername%\%sharename% and it'll launch it in an explorer window. Should be some sort of network browser on the mac to allow you to type in the unc.

You have to enable sharing on the mac to get to windows shares, at least from what I remember on mine lol. Anyway if you go to finder and GO at the top it says connect to...do it in there.

Solid tip but I had already done this. I can access my WHS just fine. What's weird is that when I try to do the same for my WS2012, it "mounts" the network path and I can see the two shares I created but I can't copy anything into the folders.

Is there a WS2012 for Dummies or help blog somewhere that anyone knows of? Like I said, I'm solid with WHS...have used both WHS and the latest WHS2011 for the past 6+ yrs. WS however is completely new to me.

Sounds like you have permissions set incorrectly. You'll want to set everyone to have full control on the share and then grant the user youbare authenticating as to have full control in the security tab.

Default share permissions are read... if you don't change them you can't write to the share. You then have to grant security permissions (NTFS) on the folder you want to share. This can all be accessed from the properties context menu using explorer.

Demon, I'll double check this afternoon and report back. I know I created full R/W access on the shares (by right clicking on the share, advanced, add, etc...) but didn't know about this "security tab" portion.

Hopefully this fixes my problem. Would love to really make use of WS by learning how to really take advantage of it, then moving some of my VMs over to it, and possibly even pulling the plug on my WHS (or making that a VM as well).

I'm getting the feeling that WS is definitely more than I need and I could likely stick with WHS, but I'm looking into the future since WHS is a dying product.

For Windows shares, there are 2 sets of permissions to configure on shares.
First there's the "Share permissions"
Then there are the NTFS permissions.

By default, the Everyone group gets read-only access in the Share permissions. You can change this so Everyone has full control.
It sounds like you configured the NTFS permissions.
