No such SSD. The Samsung 840 comes in 120, 250, and 500GB models. If you want 512GB you need the 840 Pro. The 840 uses TLC flash, so unless you can find it a lot cheaper than other SSDs, I'd skip the 840.

If you want a reliable 512GB SSD, I'd go with the 512GB Plextor M5P. It is $459 at amazon now.
 
Noticed my Samsung Magician informed me of a new firmware. Downloaded and installed. Went fine. FYI.
 
I"m gonna be needing more space in the future as my Intel 520 120gig won't last much longer but i've had zero issues as it being my first SSD. Should I give a 250gig 840 Pro a try or just stick with Intels tried and tested 520 in a 240 gig? And yes, I do have 6gig SATA and no, I have no need for RAID or wanting to deal with it.
 
You're asking this in a Samsung 840 Pro owners thread? What do you think our answer will be?

Did you have to back up your whole system first? I want to flash mine too, but scared of screwing up my data. I don't have anything irreplaceable on the drive, but don't want to go through the hassle of reinstalling the OS and all my programs/games/drivers.

While it is good practice to always have a current backup, whenever you plan on doing something like upgrading the firmware on your SSD you should be doubly sure of your backup situation (just in case).
 
Yeah I figured I should, I just haven't had an SSD before and wasn't 100% sure. Doing a full backup now.
 
Just being honest man. These are great drives. So are the intel's. These are the current performance king (this month anyway) from a manufacturer known for performance and reliability.

Techreport just put up their review and it was bested by the OCZ Vector or whatever it's called. Colour me extremely surprised considering reviews at other outlets.

"Bested" Hardly. They are both on par and trade blows on different metrics. One doesn't "best" the other, IMO. The Pros read a little faster while the Vectors write a little faster.
 
The Anandtech review shows a different picture with the Samsung looking much more favourable too.
 
Yes Anand's 'real world' benches consistently show the Pro over the Vector.
 
840 pro and vector perform similarly. The bigger difference is you know Samsung will exist in 5 years, and you know Samsung has a history of reliability, and you know Samsung has the best software tool
 
I bought a 840 pro 128gig (MZ-TPD128, MZ-7PD128BW). I've been fairly pleased with it, though I'm not getting what it can deliver with my setup:

Gigabyte EP45T-UD3LR / 12GiB DDR3 1333 / Core2Quad (Q8300 @ 2.5GHz) / Win 7 64

The SATA interface is SATA II.

Got the drive in the first SATA port and AHCI turned on in the bios.

Only problem that I've run into is that the Samsung utility keeps informing me that new firmware is available but when I click on the link to get it, I land on a page for the firmware zip file that tells me "The page you requested is not available". I've been seeing this for two days and I still can't get the new firmware. It references file: DXM04B0Q.zip in the URL. The drive utility currently reports that I'm using firmware: DXM03B0Q.
 
But why is dillo's 840 Pro 128GB so much slower than my 840 Pro 256GB?

From what it looks like, one is using SATAII and the other is using SATAIII.
 
Strange that I fail to notice a difference in boot up speed.

System 1
• OS: Windows 7 x64
• CPU: i5 2500K
• Mainboard: Intel DH67CF
• SSD: Intel X25-M G2 80GB (SATA II)

System 2
• OS: Windows 7 x64
• CPU: i5 3570K
• Mainboard Intel DH77DF
• SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 256GB (SATA III)

System 1 = Boot up speed 30 seconds (full of clutter)
System 2 = Boot up speed 25 seconds (fresh install)

There's hardly any difference.

20% of anything after a few years is pretty good. And since half that time is probably not using the ssd, it means the ssd is even better than it looks
 
Hello guys new member here and with rather bad experience with 840 pro...

I own a system based on m/b gigabyte z77/ud3 with core i7 3770k and experienced a problem with
model my 840MZ -7PD256BW which i bought a month ago from amazon.fr

When i installed windows 7x64 and used it for 2-3 days suddenly after a reboot the ssd died and the system was searching for boot device. This happened not from start but after i update the latest ssd fw. When the ssd failed i had to re-format (as it appeared as unallocated space after death) and reinstall windows just to see after 2 days same thing happen after reboot randomly.

Does someone else have same problem?

Haven't had any issues so far, using it since middle of December / Firmware: DXM04B0Q.

I plugged the SSD in my asrock Z77 Extreme4 intel SATA III Socket...and I cant find a way to move up those results...


I am working in AHCI mode. CPU is 2700k@4600Mhz...

same values (more or less) with another Samsung 840 pro, same size. I really dont know what to do, so you are my only hope :D

I seen the same anomoly on my desktop rig. 64thrd performance a joke, with in my case saturated cpu, yet my much weaker spec'd laptop can handle 64thrd fine lol.
 
This has been mentioned countless times in several threads I've found, but holy hell if you use this drive and are going nuts trying to match everyone's 4K benchmarks, etc., turn off EIST, C1E, and C3/C6/C7. Just turn that shit off. I was probably screwing myself with my 830 as well and never knew it:

These results are with a drive with Windows 8 loaded and running, with OP enabled, and with 57GB filled. Magician optimizations were run before both Crystal tests but I through in AS SSD screen without optimizing again.

I didn't get a screen shot of my Magician benches before shutting all this crap off but I was getting scores in the 80K range in Random Read IOPS and 33K in Random Write IOPS. Now I'm over 99K and 90K respectively:

Mine is still not fast enough :/
I mean it's not slow by any means but I've been a disk nazi since the WD Expert 18gb. I hate all disk performance. I want instant loading always :(

Loading bars suck, maybe it's the time it takes to copy the textures over PCI-e 2.0 to the video card? Maybe the CPU is calculating some crap, either way, not just games but general PC use on an i7 2600k (4ghz) with 8gb (2133) and an 840 Pro, still too slow :(
I want ludicrous speed. Not calculation wise, I don't care if something which should take a while does (rencode video) - I want that general use snappyness :(

Loading maps in SC2 for example? Still horrendously slow by my definition.
 
I had one crap on me and Samsung replaced. The replacement also acted weird, but I came to the conclusion it had to do with my MB and the Asmedia controller. I got an OCZ Vector and it works like a champ. Weird.
