I was playing the Aliens vs Predator game, marine campaign (as I finally wanted to finisz the story). Was walking the dark corridors, looking at the movement detector... suddenly my cat pounced on the back of my chair. Can't remember any mix of the game and real world that scared the crap out of me :)

Anyone got any games you couldn't finisz or were too afraid to play it when it's dark? :)

The Suffering was about a tough black guy, Torque, who was convicted of murdering his wife and kids. He was condemned to a prison that was run by a sadistic psychiatrist AND attacked by supernatural creatures. One of the creatures had blades for arms/legs. I actually had nightmares with those bladed bad guys chasing me. Great old horror game that can be downloaded for free.

parasite eve in the dark when i was like 12 or whatever cant remember how old.

the rat morphs and shit right in front of you... fucked with me. forever.

Thief 3? I think it was 3. Shalebridge Cradle. I play that game every year with the intention of finishing. I get to the Cradle, get parts of it done, and can't finish. It's mentally taxing especially in a dark home theater with a 7.2 surround system and 110 inch wide screen. It's also physically taxing just sneaking around in the dark in that game cause it's scary as f- in that part of the game.

Lost all my game saves in Fallout 3 and had to start over.

^^^ haha classic. :D

System Shock 2 was the scariest for me. Creepy noises, corridors and general unexpected nastiness throughout the game.

Hearing her voice gives me the heebeejeebies.

first run through of the F.E.A.R. demo back in 2005. playing with the lights off, start to go down the ladder and that creepy little bitch Alma appears. in my head: "what the fuck is that?!". literally 1 second later my girlfriend at the time sneaks up behind me, shakes both of my shoulders and yells BOOOO at the top of her lungs. one of the few days i contemplated domestic violence.

Yeah, that game is pretty scary.

Two times come to mind:
1) I was playing Oblivion, I walked into a dungeon looking for loot. There didn't seem to be anybody there. I hear (a nice womans voice) "is anybody there?". Don't see anybody. I didn't think nothing of it, kept on walking. Couple minutes later I hear it again. I still don't see anybody.
Then I'm walking down a hallway and this witch jumps out at me. I jumped up, and almost peed myself.

2) Playing System Shock 2 and seeing ghosts walking around the ship. The soundtrack was also scary.

System shock 2, the whole game was one scary moment followed by anothe.

- as an aside, it's also why i found the alledged spirtual sucessor bioshock so dissappointing.

After finding out Steam wouldn't do returns and I'd be stuck with Brink in my library, forever.

The Dead Space games had no shortage of jarring creepiness.

The first Dead Space for me. It wasn't so much a scream out loud type of thing, but I definitely had a large feeling of dread for most of the game, and was very tentative going anywhere because I was freaked out at one of those necromorphs jumping out at me. DS2, while still good, definitely didn't capture the same feeling. A bit more action oriented.

While wearing headphones, hearing those screaming babies and demonic voices in Doom 3, that scared the shit out of me. Also, all those hallway/corridor scares that were also in that game.

when the tentacle comes out and grabs you and drags you. absolutely INSANE hahahah

This. :D

No, actually Clive Barker's Undying back in the day. Started out playing it in the dark, didn't take long before scared me so bad that had to finish playing it during daylight.

Doom 3, that was a very hyped up game back then & the best looking for its time. It was pretty freaky back then. Most of us might have been desensitized enough already it's going to take more than just a monster to be scary. Something needs to be added to make it scarier great voice acting, great story & amazing music could go a long way in those 'scary' moments

SS2, many moments.

Legend of Grimrock had me jumping every once in a while.

STALKER had a few moments in the dark that could get the blood pumping.

The only thing scary about Dead Space was the horrendous mouse acceleration that you couldn't turn off.

I'd have to say that Amnesia was the scariest game I've played, particularly the Choir level.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent

and as others have said, System Shock 2, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and F.E.A.R.

As other people have stated, probably System Shock 2. You'll never look at monkeys the same way afterwards.

Probably not the scariest moment for me ever, but Bioshock 1 was pretty spooky at first for me. Say what you will about the game (I thought it was great), but the sound design in that game was outstanding. Especially played with a surround system. But for some reason your character walks around like a klutz and thus every time you walk over an empty bottle, chair, or some other piece of debris you seemingly kick it, stomp on it, or whatever. So you walk along and all of a sudden you hear this clinking sound behind you because you didn't notice that bottle you just walked over... combined with the tendency for the game to have splicers appear behind you or in rooms you have already traversed...

It freaked me out for a while and made me hesitant to play, then I understood that many of these random noises was really my dude being a klutz and went on to really enjoy the game.

Penumbra and the dogs through the window in Resident Evil. I was not prepared for that.

...atmosphere up the wazoo (imo).

Especially playing for hours in the dark in front of a 40" tube.

Falling off of high buildings in Mirror's Edge gives me shivers.

Climbing the tower in Metro 2033 had me sweating. I'm deathly afraid of heights.

System Shock 2 for sure.

I'll also name the Nemesis in Resident Evil 2. Didn’t see him till the second half of the game and you never knew which wall he would just burst out of.

FEAR and Undying had some pretty creepy moments (I had some zombie dogs attack me from the rear in Undying and scare the Bejesus out of me :) ) ... Undying used sound extremely effectively in its day and created an enormously creepy atmosphere (too bad the overall game wasn't very good :( ) ... For I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream had some uncomfortable moments (not really scary but very disturbing sometimes)

I'm never been so frightened in a game that first i saw the monkey in system shock 2 wow.

number 2 on my list would be undying, very scary, and very under rated.

I've never been startled in a video game all that much. Uneased, yes, I've never really had a "jump out of my skin" moment in a game.

However, a couple of times watching scary movies I've been slightly uneased and the cat decides to silently crawl up on the back of the couch and tap me on the elbow, that's made me jump a couple of times :D

first FEAR

Oh and for whatever reason Turok Dinosaur hunter on N64 scared me sometimes.

STALKER too...yeah bad ass game.

When I was young, the invisible pinky demons in Doom would freak me out. Also, I had a major fear of the unknown in Betrayal at Krondor. Having "friendly" NPCs try to poison you in the first chapter probably didn't help.

The biggest jump out of my seat moment is probably when the Loper throws the dead scientist into the window you are passing in Return to Castle Wolfenstein.
