According to this post by the company's CEO on its U.S. website, Scythe is closing down operations.

To Customers and Users

Scythe USA Inc. has been a supplier of Scythe products for the past several years. In November 2012, Scythe USA had to make a difficult decision to end its operations as a result of the closure of its parent company. We greatly appreciate your business and support over the years.

Sincerely,

Masahiro Sakai

Wow, that sucks. I've always appreciated their fans and controllers. But more than just lack of access to their hardware, it just sucks about the loss of jobs and sign of the economics times.

Well, that sucks. What a terrible loss to the industry. I think I may have to buy a couple of their products I've been thinking about/putting off before it's too late. (Warranty be damned but they made quality stuff)

So first DD close down (who makes the blocks) and then Scythe (who provide the fans)...does that mean Hardware Labs are next?

Definitely sorry to see them go. I have their fans in every one of my systems, reliable, quiet stuff.

Now I need to buy up all their low profile fans for my future HTPC builds. Also debating on getting a couple of typhoons.

I always liked their stuff, I think I have bought 4 or 5 cpu coolers from them over the years for various PCs. It stinks to see a company that makes good quality products go...

Well crap that sucks they had some very good fans for their price points. More of a loss than DD IMO...

Yup, more of a loss than DD, agreed. Although not good either way.

And I just got the Kama Flow 2 a few weeks ago. Guess I should try to get another one before they disappear.

I wonder what this means for the availability of the Gentle Typhoon. I always wanted to try one of those, especially the AP-13.

Wait a minute, doesn't that mean Scythe as a whole just went out of business?!?!

looks that way. shame too, they made some interesting heatsinks.

So where in the hell am I going to get 120mm fans @ $10 that are quiet??

Scythe had some massive over the top HUGE cpu heatsinks, they were without a doubt [H]ard. Going to miss these guys.

Why did the parent company close if their products were popular? It had to be some stupid management thing like the company trying to sell tropical fish and MTG cards at the same time.

I have a couple of their fans. They made some great quiet fans, but it seems like people prefer other brands these days.

It's a bad deal, though, since the selection of quiet 140mm is still fairly limited.

Depends. They could have also wasted tons of money developing and manufacturing ridiculous products that hardly anyone was going to buy.

Oh wait, they made that susanoo heatsink last year. And the kama angle, and the kama cross, orochi, probably a few others as well. Scythe had some great products(I have one of their heatsinks in my HTPC), but they also had this habit of making silly stuff for no reason other than to be silly. You can't keep doing that as a company.

Oh no... Scythe made some excellent heatsinks and fans. You could get within a degree or two of some Thermalright monstrosity at a fraction of the price (MUGEN was an especially great line for this) and included a decent fan as well! Their "Big Shuriken" and a few others made them some of the only decent SFF/low profile coolers around. Their heatsinks were always lapped to perfection (unlike more pricy options).

It always surprised me that Scythe were so affordable and prevalent in America, considering that most Japanese PC enthusiast components (Windy/SOLDAM) were hardly available here at all or crazy expensive; sometimes, even when the quality wasn't so great compared to other items.

I'll be sad to see Scythe go. MUGEN, S-Flex, UltraKaze, GentleTyphoon and others have long been staples in my builds.

Sad to see them go. Several years ago I used their ginormous heatsinks (at the time) and quiet fans for nice to build a quiet system. Now a days it seems all the mainstream companies jumped on the bandwagon and are producing ok quality quiet products at significantly cheaper prices. I'm thinking that what probably did them in.

That is too bad. I still havae a bunch of systems with their coolers and fans in them.

Sad to see them go.

Their fans were exemplary. A shame.

Fuck the politicians that drive our situation further into the sea.

What a great loss to silence in computing. Scythe has always pushed the edge in how far and how low heatsinks could go. Quite a shame, I'm going to have to buy a couple of their fan controllers and fans to stock up now! The 1200rpm slipstream model was one of my favorites for silencing because you could undervolt it below 500rpm sounding great and they were always so cheap.
