Seagate Barracuda 7200 3 TB - $99 @ Amazon

I've been a big WD fan for a long time now, how is Segate coming along now days? Weren't they having some issues awhile back?

Seagate and WD 3TB are rated approx the same on all websites.

Seems it's about even, with the 3TB drives, at least.

Must resist as I have spent too much. Great deal though. My 1tb seagates are still going strong.

It worked I got one on lighting deal then I ordered 6 today.

and a lighting deal 2tb last night.

and western digtals seem to die more than seagates to me I have seen way more dead western digital hardisk in my life.

Should I buy one of these at $110 or wait and see if the price comes down??
Was hoping to find a 3TB drive for $89 or so on cyber Monday :(

They wear $89/fs on Thursday of last week.

I bought two of the $99 external ones from Costco (no tax).

Ironically, I have 8 brand new ( purchased pre-flood) 2tb Samsungs and 4 750gb high performance Samsungs sitting in a storage unit in California. One of these days I'll spend the effort to retrieve them and stop buying drives, lol.

Horrible. Seagate moved production to China from Taiwan on these Barracudas, and dropped the warranty down from three years to one. About a third of the "new" Barracudas come DOA and the rest fail on the 366th day of use. I just can't stress enough that anyone who buys hard drives based on price alone is pretty much crazy, or too young to have lived through the frustration of them failing.

I bought this SV35 Series instead, which is made i Taiwan and has a three year warranty. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148901

I am really starting to hate these lightning deals, they seem to be full in a minute...

It certainly doesn't have the 5 year warranty of my 70 GB Raptor or 640 GB Black, but FYI the 3 TB Barracuda I ordered last week from Newegg and received yesterday (and am formatting now) shows a manufacturing date of 9/2012, was made in Taiwan, and has a 2 year warranty.

FUD alert. Only brain surgeons that don't make backups will ever be frustrated by a harddisk failing, which any harddisk ever made is capable of doing at any moment.

And if we're talking Newegg then its only $9 to extend the warranty by 3 years on these things anyway. BFD.

Good to know, thanks.

You're right but any hard drive can fail at any time and for any number of reasons. While it's always nice to have a good warranty, the fact remains the warranty isn't going to replace your data and more than likely any warranty replacement would be a refurbished hard drive, personally "refurbished" and "hard drive" are three words I don't like in the same sentence.

I don't think there is anything wrong with buying these cheaper drives are long as you're aware of what you're buying and have a kick ass backup plan in place.

Honestly for that price I would probably go with WD over Seagate, they had WD 3TB REDs for $150 last week.

Uugh,
so I cancelled my order with newegg and went with this one from Amazon + the 3yr square trade warranty
Drive: 109.99 (prime shipping), Warranty: $14 = $124

Much better buy because I will be reformatting it anyway (so backup plus is mostly useless to me).
This will be a backup drive and sit in a fireproof box most of the time. I only do weekly backups anyway so I am not too worried about longevity (long, continuous backups but nothing too stressful). I figure if it doesn't fail while burning in, it be fairly reliable.

EDIT:
So I am banning myself from the deals section because I am wasting too much of my time :D

Cancelled my amazon order and went with this:
http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1730657

$101 Shipped with a 5yr warranty. Best part for me is that it has a USB 3.0 A connector, instead of the flimsy ass mini ones.

Not super hot, but definitely a good buy.

$.035/gb vs $.033/gb for that $100 3tb drive (IE basically no difference) :p

$59 would be super hot.

I wish Samsung was still making their F4s. Want to buy 3tb drive soon. Not sure to go with WD Reds, Seagates, or Hitachis.

All 3 of my 3 terabyte drives showed up today, they set up nicely in 1 of my Sans Digital 8 bay Raid towers. Im upto 20 Terabyte now in my HTPC and i still have 1 empty Sans Digital tower.

Yeah knock yourself out. In any case it's not FUD to face the reality that you're rolling the dice on Barracuda drives. I'd rather spend that extra money out of the gate on a drive that's rated for 8720 power-on hours (as opposed to 2400) than wonder exactly when it's going to fail or have to buy two to make backups of 2TB of movies.

Understand who comes up with the "ratings" for these drives - not an independent authority doing large-scale testing and verification - there is no standardized formula for coming up with an MTBF rating. It is grey area, every company is free to invent their own based on "internal testing" which is defined as whatever they feel like. And marketing direction/product positioning factors in, don't kid yourself.

No offense, If you really believe a higher rated MTBF or power-on hours means you don't need backups then there's not much more to say here.

If you have crappy hard drive cooling or no ventilation at all then your asking for an early hard drive failure. It isn't 1995 where u can run it as hot as an oven and be fine. Newer drives will die without cooling much faster.
