Its about time sale prices start falling to pre-flood prices :D. If you buy a drive from NewEgg make sure you test the drive thoroughly before employing it ... I've seen too many poorly packaged and DOA drives from NewEgg than anywhere else.

Exactly. Its this reason I find myself wanting to by my drives from big box stores rather then online. Drives at the stores get delivered in bulk, and are less prone to being tossed about during the delivery. Order a drive online, it gets packed in a lightweight football sized box and its too easy for the UPS sort crews to toss it to and from the truck and conveyor systems. The only time I buy a drive online is if I'm buying a few other things where they will combine them all to a bigger, less "toss-able" box.

I have read about bad packaging from newegg a lot, but personally I have always received hard drives packaged rather well. When I ordered 4 Samsung 2TB drives newegg actually sent it in the bulk box that usually contains 20 drives. They re-used the bulk box and just put my 4 drives in there. I thought that by now newegg had changed their shipping methods for hard drives...
 
Does anyone know if Tiger Direct stores match newegg prices?

And the reds are 5400 rps drives

I have the old 640GB sata 3.0gb 16MB cache wd blue drive as my application storage drive. Would I really see much of a difference when upgraded to this? Anyone done same?

1 word. Yes. I did it from 2 640gb raid 0 to 2 1tb raid 0. Much faster over all, but its my game drives on the gaming pc.
 
Anyone know off the top of their head if this is a single platter drive?

Ummm, for a storage drive? No, though it is definitely faster. The problem is, who cares about speed on a storage drive. However you do get 5-year warranty and almost 400gb more space.

It kind of depends on what you do with your storage drives. Some people do different things.

Pretty sure its 2x500gb platters. That would be badass if they made one with a single platter though.

You actually noticed a difference in load times between 2x640GB and 2x1TB? I have a single 640GB Black for games, have had it for nearly two years now I think. Never really thought about upgrading it, then again, the games I'm currently playing I usually move over to the SSDs.

I also subscribe to that line of reasoning. The drive has already had the worst part of it's journey when it is sitting on the shelf. From there, I can provide the comfort and care it needs to hopefully last beyond it MTBF. Not to mention, if it does fail, I don't have to play the RMA game.

I also try to buy monitors from a brick and mortar store. They tend to not even have a dead pixel policy. It either works, or it doesn't.
 
Bought one of those 2TB WD Red drives.

Wish I would start seeing ridiculous deals on some 3TB drives though...

Yeah. Load times and file transfer as well. I had the 640GB drives since 2008, so I wanted to upgrade.

Looking back at it. I had the 1TB blacks since mid 2010...
 
I ordered one this morning.
I have just a WD 500gb black and a WD 1tb external. I was hesitent about ordering due to upcoming possible deals but a 64mb cache 1tb drive for that $ these days is still a pretty good deal no matter what.

Next time I'll go ssd. Their prices should keep going down hopefully. Right now I need some space for all the games I have and will have [Steam sales]
 
This is a decent deal based on post flood levels, but I personally feel that there has been some SERIOUS price fixing going on ala the DDR3 scheme between all the major ram companies that the FTC leveled against them..

Sure it was the largest fine the FTC has ever charged, but I doubt it hurt much since they reaped such great profits for so long..

Back to this drive, I have a 2 platter 1TB BLACK with the 32MB cache, and remember paying $65 shipped from NE IIRC in late 2010..They are good fast drives, but still over priced IMO..

The best deals for large storage these days seems to come by grabbing one of the 2-3TB models that most B&M stores sell as loss leaders to get you in the door..

Most companies will honor the warranty on just the drive if you remove it for internal use, and while it might only be a year or two, the only HD failures I've ever experienced have been from notebook drives..

As I type this I am looking @ my giant external Alum enclosure that still houses my 20GB Maxtor (RIP) IDE with its USB interface collecting dust..I have loaned it out to several friends, dropped it at least 5 or 6 times, and that drive still has ZERO bad sectors:eek:

never had a drive come bad from newegg including the last once a WD Scorpio 750GB laptop drive
 
Just a heads up, these drives aren't exactly quiet. I'm replacing my 1TB Caviar Black because it's easily the loudest thing in my PC right now (the hum of the motor alone while the disk is idle is THAT loud...)
 
I got this when it was new on the market and now nearly 3 years later it is still kicking
 
Ordered one. Experience from newegg on HDDs has been pretty good. Only had 1 that was shipped and didn't work. And that one had a weird warping on the back so I am thinking it was defective from the get-go and not a fault of shipping.

Ive heard people say that shit before but for me its an odd statement. I use all my blacks as storage and honestly, my pc is damn near silent. Subjective statements like that regarding noise always comes down to individual factors, such as type of case, mounting, etc etc. My drives sit on cushy gel washers in my Antec P182. All my hard drives may not be perfectly quiet, but they arnt distracting or anything. I honestly dont even hear my blacks all that much when transferring or backing data up, so I dont see how mine can be silent and others can be loud.

Also, I am taking a guess someone who says a hard drive is loud must be using it as the boot drive? Why would anyone run a black as a boot. Use a raptor or SSD. Not many people want to use 7200rpm drives as boots anymore, unless you like full retard slow.

I agree with you on the noise thing, but the above is just complete and utter bullshit.

Probably 95% of the rigs out there right now, even enthusiast rigs, use a 7200rpm drive as the boot / OS drive. Hell that's what the WD Black was made for... Yes, the Velociraptor and SSDs are better but there is a big price premium to be paid there.

My drive is suspended on elastic bands (fully decoupled from the case) in a Fractal Design R3 with full sound matting installed.

This has made seeks utterly inaudible, but it HAS NOT removed the drone of the spindle motor. When my machine is idle and all the fans have spun down to low RPM, the drive noise easily rises above all else.

Check my sig... Samsung 830 128GB SSD is my current boot drive. The Caviar Black 1TB handles programs, games, and general storage. Even when it's not being accessed, it's loud and drones away annoyingly...

I'm getting two Western Digital Red 2TB drives to replace it (I'll be putting them in RAID 1). According to SPCR even two of these Red drives should be quieter than one Caviar Black.


Edit: For reference, I went ahead and pulled up SPCR's noise and vibration ratings on the Caviar Black and Red drives. here's the Caviar Black 1TB:
Vibration score: 4 out of 10 (poor)
Idle noise level: 21 dBA
Seek noise level: 25 dBA

And here's the WD Red 2TB and 3TB, the readings aren't exact because the drive was so close to the noise floor of their test chamber:
Vibration score: 9 out of 10 (excellent)
Idle noise level: ~13 dBA
Seek noise level: ~14 dBA


Considering the shell-shocker is over (Putting the Caviar Black 1TB back up to $109), I'd go with a WD Red 2TB for the same price (and better performance across the board, aside from seeks).

That noise difference between the Black and Red is surprising, I didn't think we'd see that kinda disparity these days (even between 7,200 rpm and variable/5,400).
 
not a black but I have an RE4 1TB in my work pc and it is noticeably louder than the blue I had in it previously.
 
Are these four platter drives or just three platter drives that are louder than others of their kind? My two platter 640GB Black is pretty quiet, tho again, most of my stuff is running of the SSDs... I never sat it next to the Green drive I have to compare them (not even sure how many platters on that one).

It varies greatly from drive to drive, but two and three platter variants tend to be the quietest.

I think the biggest reason the Caviar Black 1TB is so loud is because it lacks all of the automatic balancing tech Western Digital have integrated into their newer drives. The WD Reds I pointed out above will actively monitor their vibration and re-balance themselves to reduce it (thereby making them quieter, and supposedly also making them last longer).
 
Got mine yesterday. Packaging was fine: a box within a box with bubble wrap and shipping paper.
Date on the unit was 11/sept/2012.

Formatted and installed some games.
Runs quiet and fast. I'm satisfied
