What card is better...
ATI XFX 5770 Videocard or a EVGA GTX 295 CO-OP?
I know both older... Someone wants to give me the ATi just wanted to know if it would be worth switching?
 
well, the 295 is bar none the better performer, however, you pay for this in power usage(big time) temps, and probably noise.

The thing the 5770 gives you is access to DX11 though not really able to tap DX11 as the simple fact is, it simply does not have lots of horsepower to push the settings high enough, or frames well enough. 5770 is great bargain gaming card for its generation, but was slightly underpowered even with its limited overclocking.

GTX295 on the other hand was massively powerfull, enthusiast level card for its generation, but as mentioned, power, temps, possibly heat, left alot to be desired, but considering it was pushed to the bleeding edge of that process, thats not really surprising.

If you had dual 5770, then I certainly would give that a try, but freebies are always great, I suppose it depends on what you play, what you are looking for etc.
 
well my 295 plays everything i ever throw at it....
The 5770 is a freebie i was thinking of building a mid range gaming rig with for my little brother.
Sad part is, i dont play much games anymore. I was thinking of building him a rig and throwing my 295 in it and keeping the 5770 for me for the light occasional gaming,
 
As Dragons said, noise is definitely an issue. But then, even a "quiet" PSU is loud these days considering the higher wattage coming out of it and the bigger fan required to accomodate it. It simply means, quieter for the spec.

With my massive Case i really dont hear the video card much, even when i turn the fans to 100%,
 
:p I know myself all the modern cards I have owned between 52-64% I can handle them, beyond that, I find the noise distracting.

But yeh, the 5770 for reso 1680x1050 and 1920x1080 it should play decently enough. I wouldn`t ask it to do any miracles, but it is a budget gaming card. I know a freind of mine was playing BC2 and BF3 with his and an a first gen i7 800 series cpu, he actually played quite well, so the card is decent enough. Just dont run the settings to the moon and you`ll be happy.

If it is a non refrence cooler, even better. As the temps, power, and how cool it will stay I am sure you will enjoy. I guess the term "noisy" is as always subjective. A hair dryer sound, a constant high speed whine, or a constant whoosh of air are all "noisy" but some get one the nerves more :)

That is what i was thinking, at most i will play some light gaming on it, my little brother wants to get into gaming more, why i was going to build him a rig and give him my 295.

Its a monster of a card in its time... I am sure there is many more that can smoke it now
 
I think part of that issue is Nvidia waited awhile to release the 295 to make sure there was enough functional dies to go around for the other cards and such, where in the 600 series the yields to get the cards out there initially at least were horrid(more in regards to functional AND at proper clock speeds) this is part of the reason the prices are so bloody high, well that and that is one hell of a cooler on the 690, if there is one card Nvidia did exceptional with, that would be the 690 even though I am anything but an Nvidia fan, I think its a hell of a nice design, prices aside.

I do have to say, the evga card looks amazing... though for 1000... i could see 600 for top of the line, what i paid for the 295co-op, now that line is 1000. huge difference in price
 
Afternarket cooler for the 296 if you need it? check forum market places for used?
 
yeh all the 690 to my knowledge use the same cooler Nvidia reference, is a very nice cooler, but yes, the $999 price tag is over the top, but the card is also over the top :p

Yeah, i think whoever sets the price must have had a brain fart that day....
 
well at least when they were released they were within a few $ of using dual single cards with a wicked cooler attached, so the cost was within reason no matter how outrageous it seemed, they were not charging a hefty premium to the design like they normally do/did. I guess its just it, for the amount of problems I read on them even getting enough to sell as the 680/670 and such, its great they have the performance they have, must of took a sick amount of binning.

same as 680 but running 670 speeds(power or die constraints maybe) and same memory speeds etc as the 680. I personally would never have need of such expensive parts, but from all sides it is a top notch design and really in the same price segment as individual cards but with higher overall quality components. Its like a suit that costs $20 more but is also $18 better thread, buttons etc. Its kind of a silly justifiable, but, really, I hate Nvidia for many reasons, this is the only thing I have ever nodded at over the last couple years :p

Kind of neato really, dual 670 dual 680 single 690 all within spitting distance, thing that seperates the 690 is power, noise, temps and very similar performance, but more $ then 670 and about same as the 680, a bump on clock speed, and you have 680s performance with less power draw. It really is neato.
