In a discussion with one of the Kickstarter detractors I made the argument that there aren't as many quality offerings in genres that I like and that is why I support the occasional KS project, so that I can vote with my dollars for genres that aren't always available to vote for otherwise. Although there are sometimes Indie offerings in the genres I like they are of inconsistent quality and the publisher offerings are few and far between. Here are some of the genres I think are under represented in modern gaming, what genres would you like to see?

Old School D&D RPG games in the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale style - I loved the depth, art, and tactical combat ... there have been few offerings in this area in recent years (Project Eternity fits this bill for me)

Tactical and Combat based RPG games in the Wizardry, Bard's Tale, and Might & Magic style - with the focus on open world and 3D games I think we have lost a lot of the tactical depth in RPG games. There have been some offerings in the tablet space here but I would like to see this genre return to the PC.

Real Time Strategy games in the Warcraft, Battle for Middle Earth, Age of Empires, Age of Mythology, Kohan style - this genre either seems to move into the world of 3D or into social gaming ... I would like to see a return to the old non-competitive RTS with the humor of a Warcraft 2 (Zug Zug ... Stop touching me :) ) or the fantasy scale of the Battle for Middle Earth games. There would seem to be licensing opportunities for big publishers or opportunities for some high budget indie titles here. I want the high power single player campaigns, and not the competitive Zerg rushes of Starcraft ;)

Turn Based Strategy games in the Warlords, Heroes of Might & Magic, Age of Wonders, Disciples style - we do get the occasional new offering here like the refresh of Disciples and the fantastic King's Bounty but again this is an under represented genre ... especially with the big single player campaigns and good but non-cheating AI ... with HoMM moving to the online social model this genre will probably be pretty under represented for awhile.

Action RPG games in the Diablo 2 style - there have actually been a fair number of offerings here recently but they all sacrificed something ... The Fate/Torchlight games had the grind down but you sacrificed some of the gritty graphics ... the Titan Quest games had decent character development but the plot was a little overblown and the item mix wasn't well balanced ... Sacred/Divine Divinity and others would get some pieces right and others wrong ... I would like to see more of these games and in a larger variety of environments ... maybe we could have a steampunk ARPG ... or a WWII one ... or one in a licensed universe (like LoTR or Narnia)

All those genres are ideally suited for PC's primarily (which is probably why they are declining) ... they don't migrate well to tablets (although they probably could with a little creative adjustments) and they definitely don't play well with consoles ... I hope that the BG enhanced for tablets and other games will possibly open up these genres for tablets and the PC again. Anyway, enough of my rambling, what genre's would you like to see more of (or less of, if you want to go that way ;) )

Tactical Shooters - I miss this genre. All shooters have went the BF/CoD/CS route as of late. Sometimes they market themselves as realistic and tactical yet are the same old action FPS/TPS (GR: FS). I want realistic gear, tactics, and realistic gameplay. Think SWAT, GR, ect. A game that blends both close quarters and out door environments would be great. Strong SP and co-op is a must.

Survey flight sims - More aircraft and general upgrades to Lock On Flaming Cliffs would be good. A level of realism that is high but does not require memorization of every single switch and order in the cockpit.

Arcadey flight shooters - They died with Ace Combat on the PS2. PC gamers got one poor attempt (HAWX 1) and a rather bad one (HAWX 2) and a terrible one (JASF). There was Wings of Prey and Apache Air Assault though they got minimal exposure and did not have all that much content. The genre has pretty much died on both PC and consoles over the past 5-6 years.

Space sims - Looking for one with realistic space movement and weapon systems. I'm not talking about a space action RPG or shooter. I mean a realistic take on what space combat might be like.

Vehicle based shooters - Like Drop Ship: United Peace Force. Again, this genre has seemed to have died down in recent years. Something with futuristic tanks/vehicles with some depth (unlike the BF series) with a good SP campaign and online/co-op.

No more of:
Fantasy themed RPGs. Be it action or not these have been flooding the market.

Most genres were covered above, but I'd also like to see a rebirth of management sims. Quality ones, like from Maxis in its heyday.

The new Sim City looks like it will not scratch that itch.

Not exactly sure of the actual genre name, but can give examples of games.

Ultima 7 - An RPG in which there's actually more to do than just fight monsters, collect loot, level up, and repeat ad naseum. An interactive RPG that really hasn't been matched, which is kind of a disappointment, figuring the game came out in 1992. By interactive, I don't mean, destroy barrels, and able to throw items around. I mean, most every item has a purpose that can be used to do something interesting. And the NPC's are for the most part unique, and have real schedules. The game can be beaten in 15 minutes or 15 hours, depending on how much you want to explore in the game. (I guess the best way to describe this would be an open-ended Explorative RPG.)

Real Time Adventure Game - Think The Last Express. I like point and click adventure games a lot, but what set this apart was the game was real time. It was literally near impossible to have the same game experience. I'm not talking about how games use pseudo random generation. I mean, there are 10 things happening all at once, and you can only see one of them. A real Choose Your Own Adventure.

For smart phones & tablets: Classic RPGs. Like the early Ultimas, Wizard's Crown, Magic Candle, etc. Ashame these died and when people mention classic RPG's, it's always Final Fantasy. There are only 3 of these types of games on Apple's app store, and they're all by Spiderweb Software. Nothing against them, but I'd like more (and I like games which are willing to add in music:p).

Quirky games. I miss games which were comedies. Yes, there is Sam and Max. But I miss NOLF, Space Quest, etc. Every FPS takes itself way too serious today. We need more Kate Archer.

Mario Kart clone like Revolt.

More Adventure games on par with Heavy Rain, Indigo Prophecy, Dreamfall, and etc.

Tactical turn based RPG.
Like Silent Storm. Really liked the physics they had in the game. A .22 couldn't shoot thru a thick wall if you knew there was a guy on the other side of it, but a heavy caliber machine gun would take down the wall and the guy behind it and maybe another wall.

Basically all the things you have to go to consoles for because the PC doesn't really have any of for some reason...

Especially A decent original PC fighting game. Never really enjoyed SF that much compared to other console based fighters.

Then

A game like Sacrifice...

More games with combat like Colony Wars...

A game like Wipeout (but not a low budget ripoff)...

Large multiplayer battle games. 128+ vehicles, fantasy battles... M&B is ok, but the graphics are awful and it's kind of limited. Maybe something like the commander battles from M&B with an original setting (like Sacrifice) and 64 player battles with volcanoes and meteors blowing shit up. :D Everyone would need to upgrade everything, but it would be worth it for the 1280 character charges... Games need to reach a more epic scale... Theyve kind of got to a certain point, and got stuck. We can make things people cannot even imagine, but everything seems to be tiny scale, unless it's in a CGI movie!

JRPGs

There have been only a few decent next generation JRPGs

Lost Odyssey anybody? fucking awesome game.

Real Time Tactical, I guess. Like Myth TFL. Leave all the snoozefest economy and basebuilding behind and just focus on managing units.

More games like Freelancer. However with more stuff to do. Think X3 games but not a mind fuck. :p

Been really craving sci-fi and especially space games. Hopefully Star Citizen is good and also causes more games of that type to be made.

Yes, Myth was an awesome game. Launching dwarven grenades with the fetch's lightning. Arrows actually being affected by gravity and all the other cool effects like that. I really wish they still made games like that.

Space sims
Japan RPGs
Action RPGs like Jade Empire
Proper RTS - base building, rushes, no more that tactical crap like Dawn of War 2

And please no more of:
WW2 shooters
FPS games

Whodunnits. The best ones this gen have been on the handhelds, like the Phoenix Wright series, or the underrated "Again," made by the now defunct Cing.

More adventure games like Uncharted. Tomb Raider (Underworld and Anniversary) are good, but nothing can touch Uncharted.

More story based games like Heavy Rain...games that really appeal to the senses and emotions of the player.

More old school style Resident Evil horror games. I think that horror games don't really get the attention they deserve. Some of the Silent Hills are good but looking at the new Resident Evil games...things have gone down hill...

High quality racers like Forza or Gran Turismo. Sure we have Unleashed and the like, but nothing on PC can touch high level production console racers.

Destruction games I really want to see more of...Red Faction Guerrilla is still to this day an impressive show for what destruction in a game COULD be like.

That's all I can really think of that hasn't been covered from what I can see.

YES!!! I loved the destruction combined with the fairly open world in Guerrilla, the Red Faction after that was such a letdown. Even some of the side missions were just destroying things in a fast enough time, so much fun.

One thing I have always wanted to play was a fallout 3-like post apocalyptic setting but in a Waterworld setting. :D

MMOFPS and more MMORPGs set in space - the fantasy theme is getting old.

More open world,non-linear shooters. The STALKER series really turned me on to the FPS/RPG style gameplay,I was really disappointed by the cancellation of STALKER 2.

I'd like to see the return of the "genre-benders" like Magic Carpet, Dungeon Keeper and Battle Zone.

Magic Carpet was fantastic in it's character (spell) progression and leveling. Base/Castle upgrading, resource gathering, mission objectives, level environments, creature variety etc. It was a near perfect blend of awesome gameplay mechanics.

So many amazing aspects in Dungeon Keeper. I still haven't seen a modern game with the depth of the original DK's. I thought overlord was going to be the next big step in this type of game but was sorely disappointed.

Battle Zone was a pure hybrid excellence of RTS and action.

Another good mix is RPG/Strategy like Spellforce 1 & 2.

- Space simulators (X-Wing vs TIE Fighter was the only Star Wars thing I ever liked)

- "6DoF" Shooters like Descent and Forsaken.

- Stealth-focused ninja games (as opposed to pure-action games like Ninja Gaiden). Tenchu has been shit for a very long time. Assassin's Creed is IMO begging for an installment set in feudal Japan. Might have to check out Mark of the Ninja.

- Open-world games in the flavour of Red Dead Redemption. I'd love to see an Africa-themed game like this, set at the turn of the 20th century (The Ghost and The Darkness time period)

Lots of good choices so far ... I definitely agree with the tactical games ... would like to see more tactical shooters and strategy games ... I would also love to see old genres explored in new settings ... The Waterworld idea for a Fallout style game could be interesting (although breaking up all that water might be a little challenging :) ) ... I'd love to see something like a Zombie apocalypse RTS or TBS (I don't think I've ever seen either of those in that setting) ... it is also unfortunate that game companies have now segmented the market where certain genres are only on one or the other ... it would be great if the console people got a few good strategy games (like Nobunaga's Ambition or Romance of the Three Kingdoms) and if the PC gamers still got good fighting and racing games (genres that have tended to move into the console arena as others have noted)

Awesome Adventure Games like the Gabriel Knight Series, and finish Space Quest 7 while you're at it Sierra!!!

I would like more old school games period. We need a new version of Descent.....that plays just like the old one :)

Would love a game similar to Forza for the PC. A game with tons of cars and some modding, decent tracks. Something where I don't have to pay a yearly fee and then buy packs like a lot of online sims atm...

Would also love more first person RPGs like skyrim, fallout 3/nv, stalker. I want to explore places, not have a corridor based shooter with no inventory.

More games with combat like Colony Wars...

Dude! +rep, Colony Wars was friggin awesome!

-------------------------------

Need more Car Combat and Space sims. Also more grid RPG games like Final Fantasy Tactics

The last one was on the PsOne... I always thought a PS2 colony wars would be great, then a PS3...though kind of unlikely now that the studio that made it is pretty much gone.

But a game with that kind of combat, with a slightly more open world type setup (like Red Sun had) and possibly co-op (squad co-op!) would be great! :D

more blood, more violence, more gore and like mentioned: more FPS/RPG like stalker, more "oblivion with guns" like fallout 3.

..aaaand the usual D4rkn3ss random pscr (fallout 3 ed.)

fscreenshot14ap.jpg

i've made a ton of those.. yes i know, theres a printscreen thread... well, i'll try to organize a few, 20 or 30 of the best and i'll post there, i didnt did it before because is too much, its hard to decide which are best! :p

RTS, I know there is a lot out there but the only ones I see people playing are starcraft. The other ones are generally dead and you can play single player or with friends.

Space sims. Can't believe this genre, which was one of the most popular back in the day and produced some of the most classic PC games, it pretty much dead now.

Adventure games like MYST, Gabriel Knight or Longest Journey. Not as dead as space sims, but still few-and-far between.

interactive story games. they need to evolve more. recently there is one called school day hq. that was neat it was like watching an anime while you choose what to do.

however the animation and stuff was not as great as real animes.

I ran into a game yesterday I thought had potential, Metal Drift. It's a simpler game, needs some polish, but I think the genre has potential. Mech knockoff perhaps?

Real-Time Strategy games that, you know... Puts strategic thinking into the spotlight (Sins of a Solar Empire). I don't really see those Craft games as strategic-oriented. Its there, but it feels like the clicking and action takes the centre stage.

Countdown RPG. Wow, when is the last time this was made? Only recently I discovered Pathologic. Awesome because its demanding, especially when you realised that this game WILL NOT WAIT FOR YOU. Unlike other RPG games where you do nothing is fine, this game will slowly deteriorate in a certain period. And boy do I love these Russian-made games because they're brutal, and I don't mean that in the "combat damage" sense like most games.

JRPG. This genre is almost virtually nonexistent in PC. Nearly all JRPGs have been religiously exclusive to consoles. More games like Dark Souls, Ys, Final fantasy.
