In a discussion with one of the Kickstarter detractors I made the argument that there aren't as many quality offerings in genres that I like and that is why I support the occasional KS project, so that I can vote with my dollars for genres that aren't always available to vote for otherwise. Although there are sometimes Indie offerings in the genres I like they are of inconsistent quality and the publisher offerings are few and far between. Here are some of the genres I think are under represented in modern gaming, what genres would you like to see?
Old School D&D RPG games in the Baldur's Gate and Icewind Dale style - I loved the depth, art, and tactical combat ... there have been few offerings in this area in recent years (Project Eternity fits this bill for me)
Tactical and Combat based RPG games in the Wizardry, Bard's Tale, and Might & Magic style - with the focus on open world and 3D games I think we have lost a lot of the tactical depth in RPG games. There have been some offerings in the tablet space here but I would like to see this genre return to the PC.
Real Time Strategy games in the Warcraft, Battle for Middle Earth, Age of Empires, Age of Mythology, Kohan style - this genre either seems to move into the world of 3D or into social gaming ... I would like to see a return to the old non-competitive RTS with the humor of a Warcraft 2 (Zug Zug ... Stop touching me ) or the fantasy scale of the Battle for Middle Earth games. There would seem to be licensing opportunities for big publishers or opportunities for some high budget indie titles here. I want the high power single player campaigns, and not the competitive Zerg rushes of Starcraft
Turn Based Strategy games in the Warlords, Heroes of Might & Magic, Age of Wonders, Disciples style - we do get the occasional new offering here like the refresh of Disciples and the fantastic King's Bounty but again this is an under represented genre ... especially with the big single player campaigns and good but non-cheating AI ... with HoMM moving to the online social model this genre will probably be pretty under represented for awhile.
Action RPG games in the Diablo 2 style - there have actually been a fair number of offerings here recently but they all sacrificed something ... The Fate/Torchlight games had the grind down but you sacrificed some of the gritty graphics ... the Titan Quest games had decent character development but the plot was a little overblown and the item mix wasn't well balanced ... Sacred/Divine Divinity and others would get some pieces right and others wrong ... I would like to see more of these games and in a larger variety of environments ... maybe we could have a steampunk ARPG ... or a WWII one ... or one in a licensed universe (like LoTR or Narnia)
All those genres are ideally suited for PC's primarily (which is probably why they are declining) ... they don't migrate well to tablets (although they probably could with a little creative adjustments) and they definitely don't play well with consoles ... I hope that the BG enhanced for tablets and other games will possibly open up these genres for tablets and the PC again. Anyway, enough of my rambling, what genre's would you like to see more of (or less of, if you want to go that way )
