Firefox Metro Preview for Windows 8

I see a pattern. This is my opinion only:

Windows 3.11 (Solid)
Windows 95 (Not stable but looked good)
Windows 98 (Great, It is what Win95 should have been)
Windows ME (Sucked)
Windows XP (Great)
Vista (Sucked)
Windows 7 (Great. It is what Vista should have been)
Windows 8 (...)

I simply cannot fathom how Microsoft expects companies to be able to afford training their employees on how to use Metro.

This is the Windows 8 desktop:

This is the Windows 8 Start Screen that replaces by default the Start Menu from prior versions:

As for the training, everyone said the same thing about Office 2007 when the ribbon came out. Really, it's not rocket science especially if you take out the Metro apps. If you give people 10 good minutes of training many people can pick up the basics they need for day to day use.

As for the Firefox for Windows 8, I tried it out earlier and it's very rough right now, touch was useless on both the desktop and Metro mode.

To me I do not care that much about the start menu going away but I do care about the loss of Aero and the general ugliness of the desktop which I use over 99% of the time since all of the applications I use are desktop applications. And as a 30+ year software developer (20 or so of that primarily on windows) all of the application I write are also desktop apps.

start menu could be loaded with only the apps they need by their local I.T. head ,increasing productivity derp.

You have to skip a few to make a point. It's how that works.

BTW: Vista wasn't really as bad as people make it out to be. Unless you were one of those that bought a Dell with 512MB of RAM and a Celeron processor, you were generally doing pretty good with that OS. But, people that bought those Dell's blamed it on Microsoft, not Dell (of one of the many other OEM's). Try the godly, worshipped XP on a P2/266 with 128 or even 256 MB of RAM. Then bitch about Vista. Sure, it met the minimum requirements. But, that didn't mean squat.

Windows 8 as an OS is amazing. Stable, fast, reliable. The minor things people bring up are very insignificant. Even my minor quips are tiny and not really "complaints". I can find problems with any OS. Just the way I am. But, I find answers to the problems. I find solutions to problems that don't really exist. Just a tinkerer.

let me correct a few parts of it...

Windows XP (Great)
Vista (Sucked)
Vista SP2 with a little less of green and a little more of blue on the color theme so Joe thinks is different (Same...)
Windows 8 (Great, not all that professional oriented like XP but nevertheless great, clean, efficient and elegant, might be a worthy successor... ;))

It says that Firefox OS is coming. Is it intended to be an alternative to Android?

I think your a bit confused on a couple of them.
Windows XP (sucked until SP)
Vista (Sucked until SP)

XP wasn't as nice as some people want to convince others into thinking. Both OS sucked out the door until they fixed them up with SP's. As it stands now, they are both stable OS but it took a while to get to that point.
Windows 7 is what Vista AND XP should have been, great right out the door ;).

Vista on anything less than a dual-core CPU with 2GB of RAM is painful. XP is less painful on 1/4th as much RAM.

Aside from this just like Windows 7 it wastes ridiculous amounts of screen real-estate with useless chrome and seems to be based on the assumption that glossy, glowing, and otherwise shiny widgets are an adequate substitute for good design.

The breadcrumbs are crap compared to what is available on other OSes, the sidebar is worthless, and the only actual significant GUI improvement was the search bar in the start menu.

Still looks like a chrome ripoff RIP firefox.
also windows 8 is laughably bad, in looks and in function, iOS on a desktop.

I guess Windows 7 must be laughably bad in function as well since Windows 8 has more function than 7.

Now for another correction:

XP was a flowery mess. Windows 2000 was the real professional oriented OS and it was damn good.

Actually, it isn't really yours, you copied it from about a million other people, and to note, Vista didn't suck, for those that actually used it and on hardware sold at the same time.

well i started the list from xp lol ("let me correct a few parts of it...") and i started using it well before SP1, never had any trouble with, even with games and stuff, those days where coding professional apps on delphi & ibexpert for firebird, sybase, oracle and dbExpress on it if i remember correctly.. no problems, loved it since day one, or at least i dont remember any problems with it :p

Ah, yes. That familiar list that conveniently couches Windows 1/2/NT/98SE/2000 to deliver a flawed point (3.11? Oh yes, that was stable. Rock solid. Segmented memory models and cooperative multitasking all the way, man). What would a Windows (H)8 thread be without it?

OH! OH! Can you please post that demotivational poster showing Windows 8 alongside that AOL for Kids screencap, too? Oh god, that's my favorite. Can't have a genuine bash thread without it.

windows 8 sucks

Whew, had to get that out, now i felt like i added something to this thread.

I think the Metro design is best suited for tablets and cell phones, I personally don't think it fits well on the desktop, keep it to tablets and cell phones IMO.

I don't care for Metro on the desktop either. While my new system customers are looking at Windows 8, not a single one wants to 'upgrade' to it when it releases. I let them check it out on a demo desktop and laptop but everyone is opting for Win 7. While people will be herded into it due to ignorance and some by choice, many are opting for 'old school' computing.

IMO, it's too much change at once. People get used to things being one way and you can lose them with too radical of a change. MS should have given users a choice in the matter, I think it would have led to better results.

The whole Metro style interface is pretty when you first see it. But after you spend time with it, it grates on you. Its definitely meant for a small screen. Its so overly simple on a 23" screen it does feel like a child's interface scheme. It was bad enough look at it as a launcher. I don't want my applications to replicate the look. I hope there's a desktop edition still. The bookmark screen had me immediately thinking maybe chrome/chromium isn't that bad after all.

Actually that is a very valid contribution, but too late. All the cheerleaders and apologists have helped walk Microsoft into a disaster for PCs.

I'm running Windows 8 on a dual screen 24" 1920x1200 setup and the Start Screen is far from simple when its loaded with live tiles, it can contain a great deal of information.

This makes no sense. People who don't like Windows 8 have expressed so as well as people who do like it. Of course people who don't like it generally don't have very helpful points, it sucks is pretty useless information and I guess Microsoft didn't spend a lot of time listening to those kinds of suggestions. In any case Microsoft is trying to get into the tablet market and wasn't really looking for a lot input from anyone, for or against Windows 8.

The hybrid OS is a needed business decision.
tablets, pads phones all stuff that we use in the home with the same OS and it also works faster than windows 7, so its a good release for Microsoft.

in a year, people who state it sucks, likely use firefox and w8 ;)

Because of the plethora of alternatives? As much as I'd like to Linux gaming take off, it will be a long while yet before its smooth. So I'm forced into Windows.

I'll have the fortune of being annoyed daily by the OS like I'm forced daily at work to use Ribbon based Office. We still have 'new office sucks' cathartic discussions break out at work. I don't have Office for home use anymore even though I can get it for $10 through work. I use an open source alternatives which are good enough for home uses.

The fact they are using a de facto monopoly to force feed me their 'vision' and try sell more mobile devices is not helping the 'windows 8 experience'.

Except, unlike in the last few releases of Windows, gamers aren't forced to make the switch since MS hasn't added any game specific upgrades in this release (like the new DirectX releases in the last few Windows versions) ... business has never been forced to upgrade because MS allows them downgrade policies (my employer skipped Vista except in a few rare situations and my laptop was running under XP and Office 2003 until just a couple of months ago when I finally got a new system ... after 5 years)

As to the new Office versions (starting with 2007) that had the ribbon, they definitely were a little bit of a System Shock (or Bioshock) as the case may be :p ... but once I used them for awhile I actually got used to the ribbon and it is a useful feature ... you just have to relearn a few things ... but once adapted to I agree with others that the ribbon is actually superior to the old Office menus ;)

I am waiting to see how the whole Metro thing develops ... I don't generally do the early adopter thing on OS's unless there is a must have killer feature (usually around gaming) ... for Vista that feature was 64 bit and the new version of DirectX (but I had to upgrade my system first) ... for Windows 7 it was the new version of DirectX (Vista was actually working well on my system with a GTX 570 video card, 3 GHz dual core processor, and 8 GB of RAM)

I will likely make the jump to Windows 8 eventually ... but I will wait for a must have feature for me first :)

Loaded Win 8 on my test laptop at work and I have to say people are really overreacting. The OS is lightning fast and very easy to use. To join my domain all I had to do was type "join domain", it was sweet. Only issue I had was finding where to reboot the damn PC :)

windows 8 sucks

All versions of Windows are very good. Better than the equivalent desktop Linux at the time. At this current time though, I would say that Linux has caught up on a number of platforms. This is because, for most users, Windows peaked about 10 years ago with XP. Most desktop Linux now is as good as Windows XP.

IMHO, Windows 8 is just a logical evolution of Windows 7. The main reason businesses aren't really picking up on tablets and touchscreens (they don't "need" it, right, but some could use it for added value and services) is because no OS is really fit for it (Android and iOS). Windows 8 can change that.

And remember, the Metro UI, on regular Windows 8 versions (no RT), isn't "mandatory". I think there is already a small piece of software to automatically go past the Metro UI and boot into the regular Windows desktop (anyone can confirm?).

Wow this thread derailed into a Windows 8 hate thread in short order. Yeah guys, we get it. You hate Windows 8 and this so-call staring at Metro all day long, never seeing the desktop again. Let me count the times I have to launch the start screen every day - oh pretty much near to never. As with 7, I hit Windows key, type the first 3-4 letters of the program I want to run, and enter. Done and back to desktop again.

This thread's about Firefox Metro. Looks good and it's good to know there's going to be alternatives for tablets besides Internet Explorer. But someone needs to tell Firefox that it's not called Metro anymore, lol.

I would strongly disagree on your first point. I found it hideous when I first saw it and it has yet to gain appeal since. Now, on your point that it looks ridiculous on a large screen, that is utterly true. It looks like I'm looking at a moving billboard of ads. Thankfully, Classic Shell exists and I can minimize my interaction with that hideous monstrosity as much as possible. Windows 8 is fine, good even, but Metro truly is one of the most hideous user interfaces I've ever had the misfortune of using. I used broken skins with Windowblinds over half a decade ago on Windows XP that were less of a cluttered mess.

Yes, this Windows 8 thing, it is like a type of common enemy trolling activity or sport, against Microsoft in this case. They will probably all be using it in a couple of years, and saying how wonderful it is, when Windows 9 comes along.:D

Probably very prophetic ... I think too many folks weren't around when XP first came out ... the vitriol was very similar ... it was the death of MS ... why were they forcing us to change ... yada yada yada :) ... now everyone is like, "You'll take my XP when you pry it from my cold dead fingers" :D ... big changes are always a little shocking but if they are the right change people come around eventually ... it is too early to tell if Win 8 is just the next XP ;)

Or Windows 9 will be a re-skinned version of Windows 8, much like 7 is a re-skinned version of Vista. I think everyone can figure out the analogy at this point. :p

But with that said, I'm sticking with 7. I'm not fixing what isn't broken.
