iPhone 5 is officially the worlds most powerful phone

Its relevant because different phones have different resolutions. If benchmarking was done only on native res, people could say "oh well that doesnt matter its because that phone has a lower res and pushes less pixels thats why its faster". It makes it a little more scientific. It would be weird to read [H]ard videocard reviews where every car is ran at a different resolution would it not? Thats why you have offscreen rendering of a standard resolution so you can compare.

True, but in real world use all that matters rendering at the resolution of the phone.

Who gives a flying fuck? That's the beauty of it all, we can pick and choose (for the most part) any phone we want.

I understand that they are tying to provide an apples to apples comparison. But its not a real world test in that sence. To go with you video card example.

Yes for a video card testing multiple resolutions makes sense because a user can plug different rez monitors into the card. So that would be a real wold test.

Lets take another example a laptop. Would you expect to see a laptop's video card tested on an external monitor? You could make the argument here that some users would hook a laptop up to an external to game on. But that number of users is few far between.

Take a phone and I can't see any reason to hook my phone up to a 720p TV or base any purchase off that benchmark.

Additional if I am a phone maker why would I want to bother optimizing my phones performance on a non native resolution, it would be a waste of money.

Again I am not saying the anything against the 5, I am just saying cherry picking benches that have no real world value does not prove anything.

Unless it's an iPhone. Then you're stupid to have chosen it.

That's the prevailing opinion, anyway.

How is that a relevant benchmark?
I can think of zero times I have sent an offscreen render to a TV at 720p.
Wouldn't you just want to know the performance of a phone in its native resolution?

Because phones have (well most have) hdmi and some would like to be able to use them as portal media units. Is it horribly prevelant? no, do people want to use it still? I'm one of them.

I haven't read the 11 pages of this thread. But it's dumb...you show the iPhone 5 being compared to...nothing.
http://www.extremetech.com/computin...er-than-the-galaxy-s3-faster-than-the-nexus-7

The SGS3 is faster than the iPhone 5 using Geekbench....checkmate. The Snapdragon S4 is equivalent to the A6 as well, so really...not impressive. The iPhone 5 should be faster with the same CPU because it's doing less 100% of the time...yet it's not. That said, the memory speed is quite nice in the iPhone 5...but I don't see that mattering nearly as much as cpu power. Maybe if you're handling large amounts of data, but you're not going to be. It's a smartphone, you won't be doing tasks requiring tons of memory. Only exception may be gaming, in which case I don't really have an opinion. Gaming on smartphones is irrelevant to me, I have a PC, 360, Laptop that can game. If I'm not near those, I'ld rather just read on my phone.

shit, i don't think we even need cpu power

a tegra2 handles most tasks just fine these days

Yes phones can and are used as portable media units, never said they were not.
If I did I misspoke.
Do you do offscreen renders?
Or do you just watch videos or listen to music?

Exactly, instead of jerking off over stats just choose something YOU like and use the damn thing.

Well stats are important for technological progress...but that's about it. All high end smartphones are plenty powerful for anything we're needing.

Windows phone for life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am drunk, but I thought it would be a good idea to star the WP cult worship now. :)

Unless you need to get somewhere.

And? I get around fine with my android. I'd like to see what would happen if a small group of mobile device dependant people got dropped in the 1950's for a week back when you used you know an actual MAP or hell even the 90's.

That was a joke because the new iOS map is bad.
Yest that would be quite funny.
Which is why all children should learn orienteering or at least basic map skills.

Why are people surprised the iPhone gets better battery life?

It's doing a lot less - iOS has the least features, and there's no multitasking, it has a smaller screen and a lot less pixels to push. Sure, some of it is due to optimizing drivers for the iPhone hardware, but its not like some amazing feat of engineering the way people like to go on about it.

Use what works for you. You don't need to rub it in other peoples faces.

I'm glad the new phone is great, as it should be. It's new. They will only get better as technology improves.

iPhone 5 confirmed to have triple core graphics! THe 4S already beat the SGS3 in graphics performance, this chip is untouchable.

Interesting...

I gotta say though.. my wife's iphone5 just came in today and I helped her set it up... and felt bored with it. Same interface, same problems typing on the keyboard in portrait mode, etc. I'm sure the processor and gpu are "super fast" but I'm also sure that will be completely wasted when she is sitting there playing Angry Birds like the majority of iPhone users ;)

Still... I can't pass too much judgement on it quite yet until my corporate Galaxy S3 comes in (paperwork finally approved by financial and upper management). Trying to resign myself to using my new work iPad at the same time. Just seems so.... bland after using my personal HP Touchpad with ICS and all the widgets....

Well... it is pretty interesting when you compare single tasks between the two. Getting almost as much battery life while watching video on a @1400 mAh battery as the Razr Maxx with a @3300 mAh. Or.. a closer matchup with the S3 at @2100 mAh. Granted, I take Engadget's reviews with a grain of salt (as with all reviews) but in testing the iPhone5 beat the S3 by two hours... with a much smaller battery.

phone bickering aside.. LTE is fucking amazing.

been using this phone for like an hour now. its hella nice

Gotta hand it to the fandroid's logic...lol

before release: benchmarks are fake
after release: well...it's a new phone of course it's going to be faster

It probably blows their mind away that a dual 1GHZ chip is faster than their quad 1.4GHz. Now they realize how FRAGILE their phone is compared to the iPhone5...waiting for more excuses from the fandroids.

Who's mind is being blown again? It's not crazy for different architectures to have drastically different performance.

Apple did a good job with the A6. Almost feel dirty saying that :D

Well that's certainly interesting. Don't really see much point though, I guess gaming...

The GPU is responsible for drawing the entire UI, which is what people interact with. Having no lag, perfect scrolling, excellent gaming performance, smooth animations, etc makes a big difference in usability.

Oh ya, gaming too

The gs3 didn't have a great gpu either, no idea why they went with last gen's gpu and overclock it, but it was a horrible idea.
Either way the ui on it is still great, I wish they would drop touchwiz, out of all the oems wrapper I still prefer motoblur.

I guess the definition of 'big' is debatable. The Galaxy Nexus has a 'weak' GPU compared to some other phones, yet it has practically no lag and scrolls very smoothly.

I could see it being a touch(talking milliseconds here) smoother at times...but the difference would be marginal. If I turned off my Live Wallpaper, got rid of my 12 or so widgets(several auto change too), stopped monitoring my cpu and ram usage, it'ld be even smoother.

Big difference in usability to me is actual features and customization that changes the way you interact with your device on a day to day basis.

The GPU is part of the SoC, the S4. The S4 Pro was not available at the time, which is why you see every single new phone uses the S4. Near the end of the year everyone will switch to S4 Pro or OMAP 5.

Difference in watching videos is entirely due to more power used by bigger screen and HD, IMO.

Potentially offset by the power savings of AMOLED for typical video playback. IPS is not an inexpensive technology with respect to power consumption.

I don't think amoled gives that much of a power savings, it is similar to plasma in a sense that black is cheap and white is pricey :p

To be fair most movies are primarily dark.

You'll potentially use less battery watching a movie, but you're also likely to use more battery browsing the web. Still a tradeoff. :p

I can link you to probably hundreds of articles claiming the Harry Potter series is an excellent book series. But it's not. It's horrible writing and poor creativity. But it's popular!

What about benchmarks where the iPhone5 loses? I'll wait for the links..thanks.

*Yawn*

You like iOS and iPhone5(or 4s ?), good for you. I like Android and my GS3, good for me. Now let's stfu and respect each others opinions, this also goes for everyone hating on Apple in this thread, not just you.

This.

Why does everyone have to play favorites? I hate iOS, but love Ive's design work. I love Android but hate skins and the vast majority of phone designs.

Pick the combo that works for you and stick with it. Discuss, but cut out the 'my fone iz teh bettarz'.

Yes, the 5 is faster, it's newer. The Optimus G will probably be faster, it's newer. This will continue well past our lifetimes. Get used to it.

Guys, maybe there's one thing we can all agree on: I wish Apple and Android phones weren't all being subsidized in the US. $650 for a phone with $200 in hardware? And I bet the best Android devices are the exact same. I wish the phone manufacturers would stop using carrier subsidies to hide the true cost of their devices so they can milk us consumers.

The reason I'm writing all this is because I'm on prepaid with PagePlus. The iPhone5 and the Galaxy S III both must be smooth as hell compared to my HTC Incredible (running CyanogenMod), but at this rate I'm never going to own one because they're so damn expensive.

There's no good reason why these phones should sell for more than legit tablets. But more power to you if you can afford one.

I just switched from the inc to the gs3 and yeah it is really smooth it is mostly the bigger screen and ram that makes the most difference but my inc was running jellybean and it was for the most part great.
