Achieva Shimian QH270| $400 IPS 2560x1440 Korean Monitor

Hi Guys, I seem to be having a issue with my monitor. I got it about 5 days ago.

When the monitor gets signal either from a computer turning on or waking up from sleep, The screen would flicker 2 or 3 times and then it would be normal. I notice when the monitor does flicker, the green led on the power brick would flicker the same as the monitor.I believe this might be a power supply related issue.

Also I do see the image of my login screen (just without the backlight) so I know its not a signal from the laptop / computer and more of a PSU related thing.

Here is a youtube video I took this morning of the exact issue.

Id also like to mention that i did purchase the one from ta_planet that had the better power supply with upgraded chipset & larger noise filter.

Let me know what you think.

Thanks!

I just checked and my power brick never turns on or off. Its probably that that is failing.

got a squaretrade warranty - returning my monitor because after about 5 minutes of use i get the matrix like green vertical lines all over the screen

Well Im nearly 2 weeks into trying to get redcap to deal with my dead Shimian. Each reply takes him 3-5 days. Hes really fucking the dog here.
Describe the problem, send photos, then send video, then different photos....Much more of his bullshit and Ill run a claim with paypal/ebay.

im thinking i might have to write this single monitor off - good thing i didnt buy 3 of them

thats the big reason why i went with ta_planet his responses are way faster and not shady at all like the other ebay sellers I tried to contact. sometimes, the other guys wouldn't even respond.

Put in the claim now to cover yourself. The problem should have been fixed if two weeks has already passed.

I'm confused about the PWM eyestrain issue I've seen mentioned by just a few people. I think I'm experiencing something like it, but I'm not sure.

I just got an Achieva Shimian QH270-LITE and am finding large areas of white to be especially straining. I first tried setting the brightness down to the lowest, but then I see a discernable pulse and when I do the waving pencil test I see a strobe. So then I turned the brightness all the way up and lowered the contrast in the GPU software settings. This seems to have helped and the pencil-test strobe seems to have lessened, but I feel like I'm still seeing some pulsing or something.

I thought that the QH270-IPSB was determined to not use PWM, is the backlight control different on the LITE? Or perhaps what i'm seeing is not a PWM issue?

I also added a big 100W lamp behind me which also seems to help some. Of note, I use Dell 2007FPVs at work and have no issue with them. I was previously using a really cheap TN panel Acer 21.5" monitor which also didn't have a problem. I assume the Dells are CCFL backlights.

Anyway, anyone have any insight on what I can do? Has it been confirmed that setting the brightness to 100% eliminates any PWM strobe on this model? These models are in fact PWM right?

Edit: Aha, I figured out how to do the PWM test thanks to this link: http://www.tftcentral.co.uk/articles/pulse_width_modulation.htm
So at the lowest brightness setting at 1/25 shutter speed I get 6 stripes and at the highest I get a solid bar. In fact, I get a solid bar even 25 clicks from the top brightness. I think this implies that at the maximum setting there is no modulation and presumably I should have a constant backlight. I'll need to try this out for a while (max brightness, software low contrast) and see how it goes I guess.

redcap was very fast during purchase and had a great rating. Its not till its RMA time that these guys go quiet. Keeping in mind I have purchased these screens(5) from 3 sellers.

Just pulled the trigger on one...

was going to get the corssover 2720MDP GOLD LED but couldn't justify the 150$ just for display port!?

Ended up getting the Shimian for 300 from bigclothcraft for 300. :)

Can't wait was about to buy a ACD too until I saw this thread!

There is a nice 30" ACD for 650 though used nearby... Has me thinking...

BTW I have a 5870, which looks like it has DVI-I I should be good right?

Yeah, if you ever see a glossy and a matte side to side you're always gonna pick the glossy, it just looks punchier.

Unless you have a window with sunlight behind you...

But yes, at night or in the right environment, glossy makes the colors more vivid.

does the supplied cable have anything special about it? because i hooked the monitor up the card with a good cable and still got shitty green lines

I'm re-thinking getting one of these. I'm not happy with this generation of 27 inch IPS displays, so I figure I might as well go as cheap as I can. The thing is, I need a scaler and multiple inputs. So that brings me to the 2720MDP. Does anyone have this specific display? How is it? Bleed? Tint? Defective pixels? Should I get another one?

Woohoo! The latest batch of Achieva Shimian's arrived at our local computer shop today, and the kind folks there test the works and put one with near perfect backlighting and no dead pixels on hold for me. How is that for kick ass? :) I have read some users saying they are using color profiles from TFT central. Can someone please give a quick low down on how to load a custom profile? Am I correct in assuming that you tick off the "Use my settings for this device" and add the custom profile in the dialogue box below? Do you then set this profile as your active device profile for your "Windows Color System Defaults" setting under the advanced tab?

Thanks, will report back as to how it compares to my Dell 2405. Fingers crossed the blacks are improved. The lack of punchy colors and poor blacks have always been my main gripes with this otherwise solid monitor.

Actually, scratch the Crossover. Whould I be doing myself a disservice if I bought this? $20 less and 'perfect pixel'.

Don't think you'll get 'perfect pixel' these days.

They got so popular that there is a shortage of panels now, so the quality has essentially tanked.

I also have 30" ACD and the 27" Achieva Shimian looks a lot better. I guess I like the glossy looks more than the matted.

Good then I made the right choice!!

Yeah I got gloss always been a fan but yeah in light it will suck so at about 3:00 PM it will blow since the light seeps though my blinds.

Yes. A GTX 680 has 2 Dual-Link DVI ports on it.

On my 5870 I have the 2nd one down on the list on my 5870 that means I have dual link

Lots of great panels, but more poor PCB I think. Here and OCN seeing lots of users with no picture, lines or DOA.

Thousands of purchases, and everybody who gets a bad egg runs to internet forums to complain/get return advice while everyone who gets good ones keep lurking away happily. I wouldn't call them trash at all, but the risk has always been there from the very beginning. And it is definitely a risk.

@zazzn, that doesn't necessarily mean anything. The connectors always have all the holes, even if they are incapable of using them, so that any cable will at least plug in without bending the pins. Check your spec sheet.

Not trash.

There are a limited number of rejected panels guys. Before the sellers could cherry pick the best ones, now all that are left are really crappy ones. I've spoken to sellers who raised the prices themselves. They said it was to prevent sales as they have literally no good panels left, and are waiting on more - could take a month.

That doesn't really make sense. Why would they raise the prices on the crappy panels instead of just taking them off the market/out of stock? I mean... what if someone actually orders one at the higher price?

Ebay fees accumulate when you relist repeatedly, and the "amount sold" counters are important to these guys. Taking it off the market and then re-adding it is something they would like to avoid, so they simply change the price and make sane people go buy competitors products for a while.
