Chris Roberts has been out of the gaming public eye for more than 15 years since his work on the highly acclaimed Wing Commander games. But now, a series of bread crumbs are starting to appear that make it clear that Roberts is coming back for an encore.

A Roberts Space Industries site has shown up with a countdown clock set to expire on October 10, 2012 at 10 a.m. After entering the secret code (if you think about it in binary, you'll figure it out as the answer to everything), a letter to fans talks about his impending return:

"With films you tell stories but with games you create worlds. If you've played my games, you’ll know that's what I love to do. I'm here to tell you that I have been working on something for just under a year, something that embraces everything that my past games stood for but takes it to the next level.

"I hope you’ll be as excited by it as I am. My new endeavor is still in its early stages but I invite you to take the journey with me."

After signing up on the site, we are told that the announcement will officially happen at GDC Online in Austin, Texas, where he will show off the game. It is expected to be in development for the next two years. The art from the site suggests a Wing Commander/Privateer style game could be in the works.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Roberts just recently became Chief Creative Officer of Cloud Imperium Games. As we dig up more, we'll keep you posted.

/shut up and take my MONEY!!

This has the potential to be awesome news. That Wing Commander movie he wrote and directed was pure shit however. :p

Considering I got my nick from Wing Commander...I think my head might explode.

Space sims are woefully underappreciated by the industry these days. I keep waiting for X: Rebirth but I have no idea when that's coming out.

Never played a Wing Commander game, but is this supposed to be a space combat game? Sadly most of the "space sims" tend to be WWII in space with a bunch of trading.

Its kind of exciting seeing these former dev responsible for these great titles getting back into making video games. Brian Fargo and now this.

Not that I mind whatever he calls the game so long as he made it, but who owns the Wing Commander franchise now anyway?

Man I've been itching for a good space sims for awhile now. Use to play a ton of Wing Commander back in the day.

/me prays for Privateer Online

/me will settle for anything WC-related

To answer the question about who owns the WV franchise... No idea. The last released game was developed by Gaia Industries and published by EA (I think Gaia has some relation to Microsoft, which would make sense, because didn't MS buy out Robert's last studio?).

Guy has been out of pocket for 15 years. The technology has changed so much you might as well be starting from scratch. Sorry pal, but the weight of your name means nothing. I will reserve my judgement until I see the final product. And yeah, 20 CD's for the install would be awesome.

I don't think the technology change will be the problem in his case. I agree with you about waiting to see what he comes up with before deciding however.

After Richard Garriot's "Tabula Rasa" and "Fable 3" by Peter Molyneux I do not trust any "big names". Maybe, maybe of Roberta Williams would make adventure game, I'd get it :), but any other "big name" game will be bought after it's reviewed.

I used to love the Wing Commander series, along with X-Wing, and Tie-Fighter, Decent: Freespace 1 & 2 were all fantastic.

I miss games like that. I just want to fly around in space and shoot things.

Funny enough I couldn't play flight sims without crashing alot. Space Sims, no problem though. I guess I didn't have the ground there to crash into. Plus most Flight Sims were trying to be as realistic as possible at the time.

Damn.. the hours I spent on the X-Wing and Wing Commander games. Seems like it has been forever since there was a good space combat sim for the PC :( Not sure why this genre has been kicked to the curb the way it has.

I agree though; the movie was complete crap. Wing Commander 3's plethora of movie clips throughout the game got very tiresome as well. I would be very curious what parts of the Wing Commander game Chris Roberts had the most influence on, but nonetheless its something to keep an eye on.

I loved the WC games they were very fun, definitely nothing like them out now which is just sad. Being able to run missions and feel you actually had an effect on the war was epic. Even burying fallen pilots at space was very emotional.

Checks to see if it is April 1st... nope.

I hope this is something worthwhile.

You really need to start out with Wing Commander 1 and then play every single one after that, including the Privateer games.

There are a few other space combat games out there that are pretty awesome as well.

I hope it's a Wing Commander Online game..Humans vs Cats!

Imagine how epic it would be to have 2000 people running a large ship, doing repairs, turrets etc etc.
Would require a large subscription base though and amazing network connection, GW 2 can only handle a few hundred in an area at once ;P

I'm not going to lie though, I've got a semi right now. I do hope it's got multi player X-Wing style!

I'd like a space combat sim like that. Realistic space flight, more realistic weapons, and lots of available functions.

Though I would take a decent space shooter.

!

Yeah; that be great fun.

spam clicking a wrench to turn a leaky faucet.

I love wing commander. It was one best games that I remember from my childhood. Something tells me it just needs to stay there.

As long as he lays off the "look at me, I'm a Hollywood director" FMV cutscenes and keeps it more like the early Wing Commanders / Strike Commander / Privateer then I'm in. Would love something like those but with some top-notch visuals (having played WC2 recently on GOG).

Get Independence War 1/2 :) They should be on GoG - realistic physics, no turning on dime, same with weapons and stuff.

HUGE fan of the Wing Commander games...every last one, even that stupid-ass strategy game/flight sim one.

I'll admit to being a blind puppet when Wing Commander is mentioned, in that I'll buy it just to try it out.

Yeah, I remember when he came out with WC3 he was convinced that was the way to go with games and even predicting it was the future of gaming. I too would prefer something like the earlier titles but we'll have to wait and see what he comes up with. He could go with a totally different direction than he was last going. Time will tell.

Have to read more about the different ship types with different pledges for game balance, but this now seriously has my attention!

I'd take crowd funding over signing up with EA or Activision any day (or any big publishers) :)

Has kickstarter ever produced something with the technology or creativity of a AAA title, and if so, was it actually good?

original.0

I need this. Now.

In addition to Oculus Rift support, I'd really love to see TrackIR support as well.

Too early to tell, really. Most of the first Kickstarter games are still slated for mid 2013 or later.
