Can't say I've tried every single one of them (never used Unity nor Cinnamon) but I usually stick with what makes me more productive (KDE).

Also, tiling window managers are very interesting. I've used dwm for almost an entire year and it's a nice 2000 lines of source code program.
 
currently, gnome 2.30.2. had an awsome openbox but a package from sid killed it (never again) distro is debian 6.0.5
 
Cinnamon now. When I was on Arch I was using Openbox and was about to jump to Xmonad when I hosed my Android build environment and decided to go back to Ubuntu.
 
Wow. I personally mainly use Ubuntu and Gnome 3 with Unity turned OFF AND UNINSTALLED!
I do LIKE KDE thought and have it installed a laptop. But KDE because of it's "oxygen" graphics it a bit demanding on old hardware. I have to wonder; was KDE ripped off from Windows or was Windows ripped off from KDE?? (Vista and Win7) as far as look and feel.

I'm actually planning of jumping from Ubuntu to Kubuntu at some point.
 
Currently on Mint Mate, however I like XFCE better. I just couldnt get the sound to work right with it for some reason.
 
Still trying to find a window manager that's even usable, honestly.

Unity was god awful, the new Gnome is just as bad, Cinnamon liked to break randomly, KDE was all kinds of buggy and glitchy...

Running out of things to try here :confused:

What version and what distro did you try KDE under? I have found Kubuntu's support of KDE to be particularly bad and was the reason I switched to Fedora.

I actually run the Cinnamon nightlies and have never had an issue unlike the so called "stable" version. ;)

Just build your own using Openbox or a tiler. I'm enjoying the stability of Ubuntu over Arch's rolling releases but man the speed I had with Arch and Openbox was like night and day compared to Ubuntu with Cinnamon.
 
I got rid of Unity after trying it for a few days. It took me only a few minutes to get sick of GNOME 3.0.

I'm on Cinnamon now. This is the sort of incremental upgrade I would have expected from the GNOME crew, not the dumbed-down mess they ended up producing.
 
Gnome 3.2 on this laptop. XFCE at home. I use a mix of different programs from just about every DE though since I'm running Gentoo and not really locked into any particular set of applications.
 
Mint Cinnamon on my oldish Dell Latitude E6500.

I really like the overall look of it. and everything that I need to work just works. So far I'm much happier with it over windows 7 on the same laptop.
 
lxde (mint) on my laptop. unity (ubuntu) on my desktop. unity has a few quirks that i don't like, but i don't understand why so many people have a sheer hatred for it.

i'll have to look into this cinnamon... never heard of it before.

The Linux community doesn't like unity because it's closed source. That's a big no no in many people's books when it comes to linux where open source is king.

Cinnamon ROCKS. I absolutely love it on my laptop.

Only tried KDE under Fedora and Mint. Was far more buggy on Fedora.

Unity is not closed source. It's licensed under both the GPL and LGPL. It's been ported to and adopted by other distributions recently, including fedora.
 
Missing a few, or at least an "Other, please specify" option...

Puppy is my preferred distro family, and usually it runs either JWM, Openbox+fbpanel, or IceWM. I'm currently trying to iron out the last of the bugs from, oddly enough, someone else's Puplet (version of Puppy) since we do things community style over there. This particular Puplet runs GNOME 2.3.2 and I'll probably migrate to it (from, well, let's just say "not Linux") once all the pipes are unclogged and it's running smoothly.

...FWIW, the Puppy family is somewhat DE-independent... there are Puplets with KDE, there's one with GNOME3.*, there's one with LXDE, and there's a couple with XFCE. In fact, the latest "official" version runs XFCE. Mind you the "unofficial" versions are supported as much as the "official" versions.

How do you like Cinnamon over Mate? I have been wanting to try Cinnamon, but just have not had time to deal with problems lately.

Early Unity was an atrocious regression from the get-go. Windows would become unclosable and unmovable, lenses would become non functional, shit would just quit. Unfortunately, this was just the beginning of Unity getting in your way. I hope it's better now. After Mark Shuttleworth invited me and everyone else concerned with Unity's usability to use something else, I did. :D

Gnome 3 chopped a lot of function out of what we had become accustomed to with Gnome 2, and to top it off, the G3 dev team are dickheads. To wit:
"Yes, we appreciate that most users would prefer the option to configure the screensaver. That functionality is not included in Gnome 3, nor will it be."
"Why is that?"
"Because the Gnome 3 team has not included that functionality, and does not plan to."

Presumably, when the cross-platform future they envision materializes, us Luddites will all thank the G3 and Unity teams for dragging us kicking and screaming to our new enlightened present.
I still like to disable the screensaver when I want though, so I like Gnome 2.
 
all the linux DE people are idiots and were overdue for replacement or forking. MATE and cinnamon are the only hope for the future at the moment

I have Mint Cinnamon on my laptop and I really gotta say it rocks!! :cool:
 
Enlightenment (oh how I miss thee).

I use putty (kitty actually). God kills a kitten anytime you're in run level 5 :p
 
I'm a big fan of sawfish, it used to be gnome's window manager back in the version 1 era.
 
After recently doing some further fiddling with Cinnamon, I now use it instead of MATE desktop.

It just provided more features and functionality for me that I liked out out the box while having more pleasing aesthetics (All GTK3). I was also under the impression that it was only a single panel DE, but found out it wasn't after looking through it's config options. Its menu is clean, simple, and has an embedded search function as well, which MATE doesn't have (in it's two panel configuration). The latest 1.6 update added some cool things like virtual desktop quick lists (I can cross jump to and from applications within different work spaces from the quick-list) , improved virtual desktop management, improved multi-monitor support and a notification applet (monitors active applications and keeps a list of notifications for apps I haven't attended to.) This is good for things like IRC, IM, E-mail, etc all in one list.

Overall, it was just a better solution and out of the box experience for me. MATE desktop is still a fantastic choice though, and it's still one of the lighter-weight options I believe as well.

I use Xfce (Xubuntu). Next time I upgrade I might try something else for fun though, but I have no complaints with xfce. I have the hardware to support something more intensive so I might look at something that has more effects to it. I had anticipated adding the effects later but seems you can't with xfce as it's meant for lightweight stuff. On the other hand sometimes simpler is better when it comes to a UI.
