Maxis Explains Why SimCity Has Always-On Requirement
Maxis' Vice President Brett Barry says that an always-on connection is necessary due to SimCity's "asynchronous multiplayer experience," as demonstrated by the Glassbox visuals system.

"The city is always simulating," he told us. "People are always moving about. Construction workers require time to put up their buildings, people move about, they might go to work, or they might decide to skip work and go to the park one day – just like people in a real city. And just like a real city, we wanted to have players from other cities help you out, just like what might happen in real life."

Maxis is full of shit. That's not even a half assed lie. Would've been better if he said the dog ran off with it.

This online only crap is getting on my nerves. They don't even have the balls to tell the truth about it; it is to eliminate the resale market.

I love me some simcity, played the heck out of all of them, but if it really makes it to market online only I won't be buying. UNLESS it's priced at 20 bucks or something. After all, I'm losing value in purchasing an online only game; not only can I not resell it, but I also can't play it while traveling or, heck, while my internet is out ( as it is wont to do ).

I really do not like where this is headed. Online only games can kiss my ass; I simply refuse to buy a product that won't work down the road when the company no longer profits from running the game servers.

as much as i hate the always on internet shit to play games it still sounds kinda cool given that there hasn't ever been an online feature for sims. obviously they are taking the idea from cities XL. but i think it would still be pretty fun to try. either way there is always a way around the forced online shit so meh what ever.

This is what bugs me. EA doesn't seem to like running their servers for more than 3-4 years. I'm certainly not going to pay $60 for a game with an uncertain future.

Right...or one where hackers can grab your online account and [strike=""]leave you naked[/s] destroy your virtual city,

even when they do take servers down they just release an update that strips the drm from the game, they have done it a few times with smaller less known games.

so far i've yet to see any reports of accounts being hacked on EA games going all the way back to BF 2142 so i'm honestly not that worried about it and quite frankly if some one cares that much to destroy my city so be it, i'll just build another one even better.

This 3D Accelerator required shit is getting pretty lame.

Are you being serious? if so, I am having a hard time grasping how buying a graphics card for better graphics is in any way related to screwing people over with an always on-line DRM.

Saw this at E3.. it looked pretty cool. Soon as I found out about the Online only I let the developer and all the reps know that they were fucking stupid and I was no longer interested.

If you did, bravo! I hope they laugh and scoffed at you... then down the road they release it as online only, and fail horribly and reflect on what they did.:D

I don't care about the "always online" requirement as long as there is a single player mode. I want to build my own region, with my own cities. Though I could see myself having a good time building up a region with friends and family. But randoms online? HELL NO. There is way too much time required to build a good city/region, and the last I need is some 12 year old shit ruining it all because he thinks its fun to make others miserable.

But hurricanes are fun!

it's a stupid analogy anyway, since the real problem is features they're taking away, not anything new being added.

Technically you can argue that they are adding features but I agree overall it's a dick move.

Have graphics representative of the actual game been released yet? I hope the E3 demo was just concept art because it looks awful. What was funny was the brief moment when they showed a monster destroying the city and they had to print "Not representative of actual game play" on the bottom of the screen. I'm a huge simcity fan but this latest version is looking so disappointing.

games not due til 2013 so they are still in the alpha stage. right now i think they are spending more time on the engine algorithms and base code before really diving into the graphics part. they have posted a few video's showing how its all going to work together. as far as all the game video's and E3 demo they are cgi recreations not using the game engine.

I'm hoping someday, someone can release a game in the Sim City franchise that takes Sim City 4, updates the graphics, improves the simulation engine, increases the complexity of the city management (for the better), increases the complexity and playability of the city building tools and generally MAKES A BETTER SIMULATION GAME. Not this, we have a winning franchise, so let's change the most that we can to cater to a larger more casual audience.

I hope they focus on art direction and getting the basics right like nice textures and detailed models instead of hiding it with Bokeh and then some more Bokeh. Some of the mechanics shown on those videos are pretty cool though.

nah according to them other people can't build in your region unless you invite them, so you're not going to get grief unless a "friend" tricks you into giving them permission.

I just don't see why they can't have an offline mode running in parallel. well actually I do see, it just sucks this has to be forced. they don't want you to have a choice in participating with their happy shiny simcity community, it's either whore our mp stats for us, or don't play at all. there is definitely something wrong with doing it this way, especially for a game like simcity.

Some new details,

First up, we revealed the first details about the all-new SimCity World feature designed to keep you connected with both your friends and, yep, the world. Whether it’s competing or collaborating in Global Challenges, checking your spot on the leaderboard, buying/selling resources in the Global Market, or keeping tabs on what your friends are up to with CityLog, SimCity World really pops the notion of isolated cities living in a bubble. If you want to learn even more about how SimCity World works, we got you covered - check back here next week for a detailed commentary from the Maxis team. In the meantime, take a look at the sweet new Gamescom trailer to get a first-hand look at SimCity World.

ehh :( being a huge sim city fan since the early days.. i really, really want this game to be great. however, i have my doubts.

i realize it's early yet, but it just seems very.. fisher price? fat and clunky, like that last garbage sim city game. i don't want to place individual buildings. do this right, god damnit! back to ze roots!

This game is more like an MMO now, forced to play online, and our progress are all saved online.

I guess Sim City World is a fitting name.

Lol as long as the heroes and villains are a fun cosmetic feature i'd be in for it. @ 99cents.

EDIT: thought he was joking, but i guess its a real DLC.

Well, if it is anything like the Mass Effect 3 day 1 DLC, it'll cost $10 if you don't buy the deluxe edition.

I'm just shocked it isn't the day 1 $15 "Power Plant pack" that includes the non-essential ability to power your city.

the only individual buildings you place are specialty builds which it has always been that way since the first sim city. housing/industrial/business area's are done exactly the same as they were before.
