Will we ever get a new Unreal Tournament?

It would look amazing with today's engines but Epic has other priorities atm it seems.

I love Unreal Tournament as well. I play UT3 all the time. Multplayer is tons of fun. See new maps all the time.

When Unreal Engine 4 is finished I am sure there will be another. Personally, I'd rather have another purpose for the games existence other than to show off a technical demonstration.

UT4 will probably be terrible and they will blame poor PC sales on piracy. Seems that milking Gears of War is taking priority these days.

UT2003/2004 was the best,
UT 2007 was also good.

to be honest i dont know how much they would have to change to make ut style games to work now...
we have CS,COD, BF3, tribes etc

The beauty is out of all the current gen FPS's our there right now none fill the gap that UT2k4 left. There is an untapped demand for that style of FPS out there, they need to fill it, now.

as in what, fast paced deathmatch..
isn't that what MW3 is?

One of my complains about UT3 is that most of the maps feels very small. I miss those 32-64 players map in UT2004

Thankfully the community came up with many good larger maps.

If they ever make UT4, modding and custom map is a MUST.

Seriously. Some of the VCTF maps are itty bitty and feel like normal CTF maps.

If they'd just make the first UT game with the new engine and call it Unreal Tournament HD, it would be a huge success.

Same levels, same weapons, same characters.

Just higher resolution textures, more polygons, etc...

Gameplay must be EXACTLY the same.

I agree it would be a smash hit! I just don't have a lot of faith in Epic actually putting in any more money into UT. I want UT to be popular again so there can be tournaments and it can join it's rightful place in esports. Seeing the best guys duel is just epic and it's a shame most of them quit.

They have shitloads of custom maps in UT3 I'm sure some would fit your needs. A lot of 2k4 maps have been ported over as well.

They will make a new one, no one knows how long though. Big franchises like this cannot go without more itterations. Even if they fail like with 3, they will just wait longer and try to milk the cash cow again. And even if epic gives up they will sell off the ip and someone else will try. Thats just how things roll with big games.

I'd rather have a new non-tournament Unreal.
The first Unreal was so ground breaking, and I do still have faith in the guys at Epic. With all of the random other IP's coming back, I'll hold out hope for a reboot.

FPS as esport is probably dead and buried. They are fun to play but for the vast majority of people they aren't fun to watch. Observability is a key component of being a successful esport.

This is why games like Starcraft 2 and League of Legends pull such monstrous viewer numbers, they are fun to watch and easy to spectate even if you don't play. I'm certain that Valve's DOTA 2 tournament in two weeks will pull almost a million viewers. Even the FGC does well with games like Super Street Fighter 4 or MvC3. The thing that they all have in common is that they are fun for spectators to watch. FPS doesn't have that same sort of observability; it is too fast from first person view for many people, and a 3rd person view doesn't work either because half the fun is seeing those difficult snap shots from a first person view, so that doesn't work either.

Starcraft 2 requires an extreme amount of hand speed and skill to do well at, but it is still an easily observed game that also happens to be from a similar viewpoint as the players. Combine that with the audience having complete knowledge while the players don't, thus building suspense, and you have a hit esport.

This year Intel Extreme Masters dropped Quake Live and CS 1.6. The latter is a big deal given how big 1.6 has been for them over the years. MLG Anaheim 2012 was the first time in their ten year history that they didn't have an FPS, and between SC2 and LoL they increased their viewership over the prior event by almost double. That is amazing given that their growth had already gone parabolic after they started featuring SC2 in late 2010.

This isn't to say that fast paced FPS aren't fun, they are by far my favorite version of the genre to play. I just don't know what it will take to make one work as a successful esport, people have been trying and failing for over a decade.

No.

It has deathmatch, and sometimes it is fast, but the similarities end there.

Going from what I have played in UT2004/UT3 and MW3/CoD:

The differences is the jumping and unlocks. Otherwise it is the same. That being said, a quality UT4 would be nice.

If UT4 comes into existence, I hope they bring back UT04 style movement. It's the best in the series by far.

If you play CoD/MW3 the same way you play UT2k4, then you're either really bad at one or both of those games.

For starters, UT 2K4 does not have regenerating health unless you get enough of those polls (100)

u must suck at UT......lol and COD MW3......

Yes, regenerating health, something with minimal impact on the overall play style but worth noting. Aside from that the gameplay style is the same. Of course things like jump height will be different, but they play the same. As did CoD 2 to MW/BO/MoH/whatever other arena shooter.

Considering I played MW3 for about an hour before getting bored out of my mind, I would assume I suck at it. :D

I'll take UT 2004 over that any day of the week. I'd only be interested in a UT4 if it was like 2004 in terms of content, map size, and custom maps.

There used to be so many players in UT2004. Then COD4 came out and almost every UT2004 player I knew moved on to COD.

I always notice people getting nostalgic, reminding the old time they has in UTs and saying what great games those were in those arena shooter forum threads.
Well, those games have not disappeared anywhere! Some of us have stayed faithful to these games. There's still a lot of active servers for UT2004 and UT99 (more popular than UT3 has ever been).

If you're reading this and are one of them, please come back :)

Skillz, totally agree and unless word came out they screwed it up.. Id preorder that puppy.

skillz are you the same person that runs the ut-files redirect?

EDIT: nevermind, i saw you post a link in another thread for UT3 ;)

Back when I didn't have access to a decent internet connection, UT99 and then later UT2004 were pretty much my best shot at "multiplayer" styled FPS fun. Good gameplay modes and I always had a high opinion of the bots and the personality Epic managed to give them with their taunts, various voice sets, appearances, and so on. Despite being just bots, they gave a good experience. I liked how you could command them a bit too; it almost added a strategy element to the game.

Anyways, yeah, I'd be up for another UT.

Are any of the older UTs still being played by a lot of people? If so, which game are they playing (UT3, etc.)? I only have UT2k4 and there is nobody playing that game.

I'd rather have Quake 5 Arena.

But I'd take UT4 or U3 too. :)

Tactical/Team based games have their place, but there's nothing like testing pure twitch/timing skills with your friends. In the same room... Throwing things at each other.... :D
