The Official Guild Wars 2 thread

Launches at 2am CST.. Long night for me...

I considered staying up (CST here as well), but I would be extremely disappointed if I stayed up and the servers were shaky due to the massive initial load and I couldn't even get in. It was kind of like D3 when people initially flooded it at midnight. I woke up at 5:30ish and it was fine.

I think Anet has a better handle on the player load, but I might sleep till 5 or 6 am... ? We'll see.

EDIT: Speak of the devil about stressing servers:

We will be conducting a stress test on Thursday, August 2 from 12:00 Noon PACIFIC Time to 4:00 PM PACIFIC Time.

Unlike previous stress tests, we will be actively working on the game during the event, so you might experience connectivity problems or discover features that are not working as designed. Any issues you experience are a result of the rigorous conditions of the stress test, and are in no way representative of the state of the game at launch. By participating in this stress test, you’re helping us make Guild Wars 2 a better game. Thanks for your cooperation—we’ll see you in-game! ~RB2

i dont understand the whole doing a stress test in the middle of a business day. If they really want a stress test, do it on Saturday or Sunday, at 12pm PST.

If they can generate enough active players during the middle of a business day for a stress test.....just goes to show you how many people have pre-ordered or are interested in this game.

Why force their employees to stay late when you can get the same test results by letting other time zone players play in primetime. 12pm PST is 8pm GMT, in other words Primetime in Europe.

Holy shit man...that means I have to stay up until 2am or wake up at 2 am just to get on a server and reserve some names. I have enough sensibility to wait about actually playing, but I'm afraid my names will get snatched out from under me.
Yeah. Same.

Dumb question, but how do you guys pick servers? My friends won't join for at least a couple weeks and I want to be sure they can play with me but I don't want to be in a low population server. New to mmos...

Well the thing is you don't want a server with too high of a pop or you'll never get into wvwvw. I might just randomly pick one, and see how things go from there. Absolute worst case scenario is I have to transfer my 2 accounts to another server which costs like $10 each I think.

I chose Sorrows Furnace on the last beta weekend, and spent most of the time playing in the overflow server, and couldn't get into wvwvw. It was not enjoyable.

That article is incorrect. You could purchase digital editions from retailers(at least gamestop) as well.

If you paid in full and got a key to participate in the beta weekends, you probably are gonna get in 3 days early.

yup, I left a comment on the article about this to. I recieved the pre-purcahse from gamestop since I paid for the entire game at once. They were showing me the two cases and they were both clearly marked pre-order and pre-purchase. Got to enjoy the last beta weekend with it so im happy lol

I think that article might have been before other places started offering pre-purchase? I'm pretty sure NCsoft was the only place that was offering it not too long ago.

Well, I've only been in the stress test for 5 minutes but the performance improvement is immediately noticeable. Lot smoother, much closer to the performance of Guild Wars. The render sampling options now has 3 different levels - subsample, default (sample at the same resolution as your screen resolution) and super sample. With my 7970, I didn't notice much difference in performance (or for that matter, texture quality) between default and supersample.

Yeah, it seems to be performing better for me. Definitely nowhere near current day GW1 performance if that's what you mean, and still not anywhere near what I prefer, but I can now at least average 35-45 FPS on the "Best Appearance" preset.

EDIT: There seems to be a HUGE performance difference between "Best Appearance" and one step down. Will have to do more testing...

I'm fairly certain they added supersampling AA, so best appearance might default to that.

Selecting supersample over the default setting of "Default" doesn't change anything for me on the preset one step down, so think it's something else.

EDIT: Also only seems applicable when there's not a whole lot going on, doing dynamic events and stuff are better but not by the same huge margin.

I don't know if this is by design or a bug but even if you select "best appearance" on the graphics slider, supersample isn't selected, the render sampling option remains on the setting labeled "default" which the description says samples at the same resolution as your monitor. The only way to get supersample is to manually set it although like Shocked and my own experience, I'm not sure the supersample setting works right now, which would explain why I don't see any visual difference or performance hit from selecting it over default. I see blurrier textures when I pick sub-sample so that option appears to be working.

I also think you can zoom out even more now. They adjusted it in the last beta event which made it playable for me but I think there's even more pull back available. Not positive but that's my impression with my Asuran character.

Weird. It doesn't seem like I can zoom out any farther. In fact, I was just thinking how it doesn't seem like I can zoom out very far at all. :(

1080p, 6950, maxxed out, great frames (60ish most of the time). ready for the 25th..

I don't get this. I'm at 1200p and a big OC on GPU/CPU. With normal sampling, everything else max except shadows, I get about 40fps in large open field WvW. Lions Arch portals where everything is clustered, I get around 55fps. You are getting 60ish in heavy WvW? If I turn on supersampling, I drop to around 40ish FPS in Lions Arch portal area and 30ish FPS in large open field WvW.

Makes sense to me, it's textbook definition of being unoptimized. They do optimization last, but I'm not sure how far before release they start doing that. I'm sure they're still working on getting the game optimized, I wouldn't worry yet.

Any chance that could explain why some are able to play at eyefinity resolutions on a single 7970, and I don't even feel like one is enough for 1080p?

So what should I do to pre-order the online edition and get the 3 day head start? Also, as far as servers, we should all choose the same one :D

Played for a couple hrs after work yesterday...I must say my fps/performance/smoothness seemed a lot better then previous betas/stress tests. I did notice some server lag though... All in all I think this game is going to be ready to roll out with very few bugs by the end of the month and I for one can not wait!!

Honestly, it was a stress test. Any issues with stability/lag were likely due to it being such. I got booted from the game about every 10 minutes for the first hour or so, was much more stable after that. Didn't really notice much lag. I did participate in BWE3 and noticed yesterday the difficulty was noticeably ramped up. I have no frame of reference other than BWE3 though. I did hear that BWE2 --> BWE3 there was a drop in difficulty due to database-type snafu.

Can't wait for the headstart! I'm trying to convince the GF to play the game... She plays Anarchy Online and EQ1 right now. Guess I'll have to break down and buy it for her. :D

Girls love to play games with guys...just not the kind we like :(

QFT! She likes to play some epic head games with me, but they are all harmless in the long run. Not the kind I like, if you read into that last sentence. :p Since she's a gamer chick, I get a lot of grief if she whoops my ass in anything ROFL. I somehow don't mind (much).

You may be right, I wouldn't bet on my own impression. It may have been a result of not having seen the game for a couple weeks plus the combination of playing the relatively small Asuran character that doesn't take much screen space. I'm sure someone or a site has the definitive answer whether or not the FOV was increased another notch. My own opinion that it was is very tenuous.

I wish i could get my gf to play games with me.

I was thinking about that...then later, my GF explained to me that she wanted to be a "real gamer" and not just play The Sims 3 and point-and-click adventure games, lol.

So I got her playing Skyrim.

Now she plays for like 3 hours straight and ignores me. :(

I'm still trying to get her to play Borderlands but she's engrossed in Skyrim right now. So the plan kinda backfired, lol.
