I just picked up the new S27B970 monitor by Samsung, so here are my initial impressions;

Exterior
This monitor is just plain gorgeous from an exterior vanity point of view. Better looking than the 27" Cinema Display in my opinion. The single pane glass display is really stunning, and the aluminum just looks great. This thing screams of beauty.

Backlight bleeding and Uniformity

This is a big one for most of you out there who would be looking at this monitor. BLB is a huge problem and poor screen uniformity in high end displays should be unacceptable, but plagues every one of them.

I can say that with my experience so far, this screen is absolutely fantastic with both bleeding edges and uniformity. I can see no back light bleeding around the edges, and the uniformity of the lighting is seriously perfect for an LED. By far the best I've seen, and I've personally seen, if not owned, almost every high end monitor that is currently out with the exception of the 30 inchers. Catleap, 850D, 950D, U2711, 750D, you name it, I've probably owned it. This one beats them all, although the U2711 is great as well.

Picture Quality

Again, this scores an A++ in my book. PLS technology is my favorite, it gives such great, vivid colors. Games look amazing (especially Trine 2, WOW!). Compared to my 850D side by side, the difference isn't huge, but you can see it. Even with my 850D calibrated to the same specs as the 970D (With spyder4pro), the 970 just looks better. Luckily my 850D didn't suffer any of the awful things that plagued that series, though.

I really haven't seen a monitor with better picture quality myself. Blacks are not as deep as I'd like to see, but still very good for an LED monitor. The glass really helps things pop out and adds to the perceived contrast and vibrancy in a big way.

Glossy or Matte?

Some people love matte. Some people love Glossy. I personally prefer matte over glossy plastic. But, there's something about glass that I really love. It beats out Matte and Glossy Plastic by far. I am in love with glass displays, they just make everything look better. I think the glass display is the biggest draw to this compared to the 850D (other than being 99% accurate and having great quality control).

Now, you may or may not be aware that this is a "Semi-Gloss" glass display. And it really is. It's not as reflective or shiny as the ACD, I don't know what they did to the glass to make it semi-gloss, but while you can still see your reflection well, it's not nearly as impeding as some other glossy displays out there.

Color Accuracy

So I calibrated this with a Spyder4Pro to 6500k, 2.2 Gamma and 200cd/m2 brightness, and other than the brightness, this monitor was absolutely spot on for color accuracy. This is a HUGE plus for those who don't have a device to calibrate their displays. It really is a professional's monitor, and even for gaming it's the best out there in my opinion.

Conclusion

Conclusion? Hands down the best monitor I've ever owned. I said that about the 850D I had, until I got this. Some may be skeptical about the price, $1,200 for a 27"? You could get a catleap, or a U2711 for much cheaper.

But, you won't get everything that this has to offer. The PLS technology is gorgeous, the glass display adds to the depth and vibrancy of pictures and games, and I'm sure movies as well. No aggressive AG coating (although I heard the new revisions of the U2711 and HP variant have fixed this crystallizing issue).

Outstanding build quality, the best picture quality out there, perfect out-of-box accuracy, no backlight bleeding, amazing screen uniformity. and a single semi-gloss glass display. This is what this monitor has to offer, so I personally find the high price tag worth it, if you've got the cash to spend and are looking for the best consumer monitor, you can't go wrong with the 970D.

Now, there is one thing I do not like, a big design flaw. That's the Displayport location on the bottom. I don't mind it on the bottom (I actually prefer to have connections at the base), but the problem here is that it fits underneath the aluminum base. What that means is, to unclip the DP cable from the monitor, you have to stick something between the cable and the metal part of the base to use leverage and pop it out. This is really annoying, and something that I feel like should have been recognized when designing this monitor.

With that said, I give this monitor a solid 9.5/10 - the best LED monitor I've ever used, hands down.

Thanks for this Review awesome work. Best so far:) Hope you can do a review on this on youtube? Would be really Great. ;)

I pretty much agree with everything. Except for screen unifrormity and homogenity. My monitor has a big grey spot in the lower left corner, wich turns red once calibrated with eodis2.
I tried to return the screen, but Samsung returned it back me, saying it's fine and within specs...
The tint looks like tn matrix gamma shift. Absolutely disgusting. I will have to sue them to get my refund... But that is my problem and the problem of my location. But it gives someone interested in this display a general idea of the "quality control" and attitude of Samsung.
If not for the tint, I would've completely shared Ohmycaptain's impressions.

It should be within return policy of newegg. You should just return it. Unless you got it the day it came out.

I'd just dispute it with Samsung, really you can get a new screen if you try for it. Just keep at it and complain. For $1,200 that's not acceptable at all.

I haven't heard of many people getting bad displays, actually you're the first. We'll see how their overall QC goes with these monitors when more people buy them, but as of right now you seem to be in the small minority. The point of this monitor was to really improve upon the 850D in every way, especially accuracy and QC.

Good luck!

Sounds like great news!
Have you tried increasing the refresh rate beyond 60hz?
Im very interested in this, but i can't really stand 60hz monitors, so i hope it can reach at least 85hz or more with no errors.

I have not tried and I won't try increasing the refresh rate to be honest.

Yes better than ACD IMO.

Thanks so much for your review of this monitor! It's great to read about someone's personal experience about a brand new monitor for a change and not a blog or video review that may or may not be accurate and that you can't interact and ask questions about.

So.... I was intrigued by what you said here:

Glossy or Matte?

Now, you may or may not be aware that this is a "Semi-Gloss" glass display. And it really is. It's not as reflective or shiny as the ACD, I don't know what they did to the glass to make it semi-gloss, but while you can still see your reflection well, it's not nearly as impeding as some other glossy displays out there.

Now, are you sure this would be considered a semi-gloss monitor? Because from everything I've read and all the unboxing videos I've seen, it definitely looks like a glossy screen. From the videos I've seen it looks quite reflective, unlike videos I've seen of the 850D.

Have you seen any other Samsung semi-gloss monitor in person for comparison?

Thanks again for posting.

Thanks for the review! I'm very seriously considering it, but have been waiting for more reviews. I wanted an IPS, but perhaps PLS is not much worse. I'm intrigued by the semi-gloss display, ACD is too glossy for me, was worried about eye fatigue. I also wanted something with component input, but apart from Dells, this is hard to come by.

Looks like TigerDirect has it for $999? What's the catch?

Well, it's preorder. So perhaps when it finally appears everywhere else, the price will drop to those $999... I wonder when this will happen...

I would like to know the calibration performance. Any calibration profile is welcome.

It's definitely glossy, but the "semi-gloss" basically cuts down the glossy effect a bit. It is glass, though.

There's a difference between semi-gloss and semi-matte. This isn't matte by any means but the glossy reflections aren't nearly as bad as I've seen.

@Zenblu - I'm not sure, but if that's the case I want to return this one to newegg and get one from TD :p

EDIT: Seems it's only available at $999 for pre-order. Not sure when they'll be shipping it.

EDIT 2: I talked with their customer service and they said if you pre-order it this week, it will ship out in the next couple of weeks.

By the way you describe it, it sort of sounds like the coating is similar to how most CRTs used to do it. You'll get reflections, and it's definitely not matte, but it's not a shiny mirror either. Sort of a glossy, semi-glossy coating, rather than a mirror effect.

I'm not sure if Newegg does any price matching, but it may be worth asking Newegg to match the price of Tigerdirect on your order. Worst case is they say no.

So it's a semi-gloss glossy? :D

Ok then, could you place it on a comparison spectrum with, say, an iMac?

Have you seen any other semi gloss Samsung monitor in person to compare it with?

The monitor is now available on Walmart's website. The price is high, $1,208. I sent them an email asking if they will pricematch. The advantage of Walmart is you can get free shipping to a nearby store and it would be easy to return if you are not satisfied.

Also, would it be better to connect it with HDMI or Displayport if you wanted video and audio?

I don't think HDMI plays nicely at 2560 x 1440 but I could be wrong (it's been a while since I checked such things out). And Displayport carries audio as well.

Ohmycaptain: thanks for clarifying. I don't plan to use it in a very bright environment, so hopefully won't be seeing reflections at all.

Hm, if Walmart has it, that means 15 day return to store policy without restocking fees, if I'm not mistaken. Now if we could get them to price match, that would be ideal.

If anyone gets Newegg of Walmart to do this, please let us know.

I did ask, they do not unfortunately, but I don't want to wait 3 weeks for my monitor either, so I'll swallow the extra $200.

@ Peat, I don't know how to describe it. It basically is like, you see the reflection, but it's not super bright and mirror-like. It's kind of more washed out and less impeding.

@Outbreaker - I've been looking for a great monitor for a while, I've gone through many monitors and at the moment I have the money to spend so I don't mind it. It's by far the best monitor I've used and probably one of the best on the market (definitely the best in it's class). Worth it to me, but this is definitely not for everybody

@Dave2209 - let me know what they say and if they'll price match, I will definitely return this to newegg if Walmart will price match TD at $999. Also, use Displayport. HDMI won't be good unless you have a card + cable that can support 2560x1440 (I believe 1.4a on the new kepler/tahiti cards can support it, but you'd need the right cable too).

@TroyX - I don't notice much difference in the input lag from this to the S27a950D 120hz. I do notice the 120hz difference, though, which while I prefer 120hz, obviously, the better picture quality is more important to me. Definitely great response times though, I think it's stated at around 6ms, which is really quite acceptable IMO.

@Ohmycaptain: have you tried connecting anything else than computer? Have you tried lower resolutions? Is there a scaler?

Wal mart will not pricematch. Their email was not very friendly. They told me they will only pricematch their stores. Does not make alot of sense for their claims of low prices.

If I do get the monitor from somewhere, I will use the enclosed displayport cable.

Thanks for letting us know Dave.

Also, TigerDirect raised the price to 1200 from 1000.

Getting it from Walmart would have been the way to go for the free 15day return policy, but looks like they are giving 1year warranty as opposed to 3 at Newegg.

Zen I have not tried lower resolutions but I might do that tonight. The input lag is very decent imo

Thanks, I would appreciate that. Especially interested in how the scaling works if I needed to do gaming in lower resolutions, or when connecting external devices (like PS3).
If you'd have a chance, could you also take a look if there are any scaling settings in the menu? Thanks!

A review of this montor would be awesome Meaning a video of the screen how it looks/Gaming? or some pictures<3. So many Shit reviews about this atm...

It has custom presets and allows for different presets. When I get a chance I will post pictures, and just been too busy. I've already taken them just waiting for the time to be home and upload them. I will make a video as well.

Very nice

I will be ordering a Yamakasi Leonidas 30" in a few days to compare between these two. I will then choose which one I'd prefer to keep as well (and return or sell the other one).

I've been thinking that $1,200 is a bit excessive for me personally to spend on one monitor. But, I've tried everything else and this beats the competition by a fair amount. But, one thing I've never tried are the 30" and this one is at a good price (~$700) and isn't matte.

We will see, and I will post a head-to-head comparison between the two.

I'll actually likely order them tonight so they get here in time for me to be able to return the Samsung to Newegg if I choose to do that. I just want to see if the $500 difference is worth it to keep the Samsung, because I'm becoming tight on cash and that amount of money will definitely help my wallet out.

Always on the search for the best monitor, I don't think it will ever end. I love trying out everything, though, just so I have a good idea of what I'm getting for my money.

It's not 3D. There are no high res 3D displays, and none have been announced or rumoured.

The Samsung will be worth it over any 30" wide gamut grain fest. If the Yamakasi is like the 30" Shimian prad reviewed, using a reasonable brightness level will greatly reduce the already mediocre contrast.

Enable the Full Magic Colour on the s27a850d for wide gamut like colours. In a wide gamut world the ozone layer is much thinner.

So does anyone have empirical evidence that this is better than the Apple Cinema LED Display?

Last night the Walmart site said it was out of stock. This morning the S27b970d is not even on their site.

I ordered one, i'll take one for the team and see how high the refreshrate can go since there's no info on that.
Should arrive next week.

did a order myself to see how it is. Hope it's good. Will have it by next week too.
