Steam 2012 Summer Sale 7/12-22!

.........

Right cause EA has a say on what is sold on Steam.

Um, what? They certainly have a say over whether or not their own products are sold there. Flogger23m said that "many of the good developers" are not allowed on Steam. I was just asking for an example of some of these many good developers who are banned from Steam. It's my understanding that if a product is not listed on Steam, it's not because the developer is blacklisted, only because the game itself either didn't make the cut or the studio chose not to sell it through Steam.

Has there been any mention as to the benefits of getting badges?

I don't think there is any benefit to getting them, other than getting the badge itself for bragging rights. At least that's what I'm getting out of it.

Uh... EA has to sell the rights for digital distribution, along with negotiated costs etc...

So yes, yes they do.

Yeah I was going to say.......

So far I've bought 3 games.

MW3 (finally hit the price point)

Skyrim (again hit the price point)

Toy Soldiers (considered buying this at $10 so I couldn't pass it up at $2.50)

From what I understand, Steam has certain requirements regarding DLC that have to be met to sell on Steam, Which is supposedly why a lot of EA games weren't/aren't on there.

So it's not really a "blacklist" but depending on how they handle the game, it may not be allowed.

The only rule is that they can't sell their DLC through the game. It's circumventing Steam for profit. Which is fucked up.

Um no EA has Origin and so they choose not to use Steam, which helps prevent monopolization and is good in my opinion. I will always buy a game with Origin, or from Amazon, GamersGate, GreenManGaming, CdKeyHouse, etc, if they are the same price.

Umm yes, it was well reported that was the issue with EA/Steam and their dlc. Basically EA wanted to sell DLC through the game straight from EA rather then through steam like most other titles with DLC.

Fair enough, but Steam isn't a monopolization, and cannot ever be, on game prices. It doesn't set prices devs and publishers do. That's different than saying WalMart is a monopoly. It's the same thing as saying ebay is a monopoly. They are just the marketplace, not a reseller.

Personally, I avoid Origin because it's not as good in terms of a platform.

Also, on a related note, Anno 2070, as a Ubisoft title, now comes with their version of GFWL, "Uplay". It's worse than Origin. Slow, crappy software.

Two questions for you guys:
1) My wife really liked Witcher, so I was trying to find similar games for her. Several people suggested Skyrim. However, she's been really apathetic toward Witcher 2. Should I try to convince her to get Skyrim today, and what are the selling points for somebody who liked Witcher?
2) I want to try Dawn of War II. Which bundle should I get (price and value are my prime considerations)?

He's correct - that's why Crysis 2 and Dragon Age 2 were pulled from Steam originally. Crysis 2 Maximum Edition returned, but DA2 is forever absent.

The Complete Pack. You absolutely want Retribution for online play, but the original single player and Chaos Rising are worth it if you enjoy DoW.

The game play is similar to Company of Heroes if you've ever played it, where every unit is valuable.

Edit: Retribution single player is just okay. Not bad, but not as good as the first two.

lol Looks like all the people in the thread that were waiting for Skyrim to hit $30 just bought it and went on their merry way, now you've got people coming out of the woodwork asking why it isn't even cheaper. :p

Personally I'm happy to buy it for $30... I just can't decide if I actually wanna do that or if I wanna pick up the Bethesda Collection anyway. It's undeniably a good value given all the DLC they put in, I haven't played Fallout NV and I do want to get around to it eventually... However I'll probably be busy w/Skyrim for a while (amongst other things) and Fallout NV by itself is $20 (regular price).

I guess the smart buy is just picking up Skyrim, at worst I miss out on the DLC if I eventually end up getting Fallout NV outside of a sale, and at best I just pick it up even cheaper during a future sale. For instance, Fallout 3 GotY (includes all DLC) is $12 right now. Had they lowered the price of the collection by even $5 I would've picked it up because it's unlikely I'd get FNV and the additional content significantly cheaper (than the $15 difference) within the next year or two.

It's priced very attractively considering there's two more games in the Collection tho, I've just got no interest in 'em.

Thinking about Skyrim, but I haven't even done more than an hour of Oblivion yet.

In for a Tribes Ascend starter pack though, just set up an account recently during that FB promotion and started playing today. Fun game.

Hey guys,

I'm going to pick up the "Renegade Ops" 4 pack so I can play with my little brother, need someone for the other 2 copies. $1.88 paypal gift per copy, need 2 folks :)

Reply here or send PM.

Can Batman AC DLC (Harley Quinn's Revenge) be added to the game if I've got it on GFWL? I'm guessing the answer's no, just thought I'd check. I actually got the game for free thru a code that came w/my Samsung SSD..

Was a bit of a pain because there's absolutely no way of adding the key to a GFWL account, you redeem the code and get a direct download and once installed the game binds to GFWL when you enter the key provided at the download page. People complaining about Origin might would probably flip out and stab kittens if they had to deal w/GFWL. :p

i really hope they put Fallout New Vegas and DLC for sale

It will, and every game that has went on sale went on sale with at least some dlc with it too

Yeah I was in the same boat. Pick up skyrim now. They will offer Fallout in either a daily or flash sale.

I bought skyrim and am researching mods now. lol

It's on sale at $23 isn't it? (or does the Ultimate Editionnot include all the DLC? there doesn't seem to be a description) Or did you mean an additional flash/daily sale?

Can you give us specific reasons why she doesn't like the Witcher 2? Does she find the combat too hard? Liberal use of traps, bombs, and Quen/mind control makes most fights pretty easy.

As for Skyrim it depends how she feels about open world games. If she likes a massive world to explore just for the sake of exploring she'll probably like Skyrim. If she likes a more scripted, cinematic experience she might find the lack of story and a non speaking main character boring.

For me personally Skyrim is just too good to pass up.

Just did! If they drop FNV + DLC to $15 or lower I might pick it up too, otherwise I'll look for it on the next sale

Not really interested in anything today yet. I havea strict rule that I have to really want to play something right now to pay over $5.

I've also successfully ignored everything like Graw2 which is supposed to be shit. I refuse to go through another Jericho or Bioshock 2.

Only thing for me so far SFIV: AE with all DLC crap for $15(really regretting it. fucking gfwl. I'll live it was a great deal.) and Alice: MR which I've wanted for a looooong time.

You know I've yet to finish Morrowind+expansions or Oblivion. Not blowing $30 on Skyrim was a no brainer. Everything I've played and seen makes me feel like skyrim is inferior to morrowind. I don't like the setting, menu's, leveling, plot, any of it. I guess I'm the one off.

I'm still waiting for ARMA2 to go down around $15 then I'll be done. Skyrim can wait until it's around $10. Debating on Borderlands GOTY since it's $7.49 . . .

Orcs Must Die is a surprisingly good game if you like tower defense games but with a little more action.

I'm about to pull the trigger on Skyrim and was wondering if anyone knew anything about Frozen Synapse. Looks like an interesting concept, but that $5 could be spent on something else later (here's looking at L4D2 winning the vote).

How come KOTOR2 isn't on Steam? I have/played the original, saw it on sale and looked to see if maybe the sequel was on sale but it doesn't show up on Steam at all. Guess it doesn't matter much, I can just buy it for $12 at Amazon whenever.

How's Orcs Must Die! ?

I think today I'm picking up the Sam & Max Pack in addition to Skyrim, and possibly another two copies of Frozen Synaps to gift later... It's a fun twist on turn based strategy, and at $2.50 per copy it's a great buy imo.

The impression I got is that Witcher 2 is more complex than the first one. Complex, as in too many options for combat "moves" or something like that. She did like the way you had to adjust your tactics based on the type of mob in Witcher. But in 2, I think she felt like there were too many choices to make quickly in the middle of combat. I think.

We play LoTRO, and she loves the exploration aspects of the game.

See above... :D I've got several friends who are very casual gamers (in the truest sense of the word, they used to game on consoles/PC but mostly don't touch anything outside of their iPhone/iPad these days, except maybe Super Smash Bro.); and they liked Frozen Synapse. I think it works on Macs too so that's a bonus.

That is probably one of the better bundles. It includes all the old games and nearly all the total war games.

The cross section of people that are hardcore strategy fans and old school game fans probably isn't that huge tho. :p I'd pick it up if I thought I'd ever get around to playing all the Total War games, but I really won't heh.

What are the chances that my old copy of Max Payne will work w/o too much trouble on Win7 btw? I've still got it (just found it yesterday in one of those CD boxes), I wanted to replay it before playing MP3... IIRC the game came out before WinXP didn't it? However I don't have MP2, so I was gonna pick that up, dunno whether to spend the extra $1.25 to get the original too, lol. :p

Pretty sure they work just fine.

yeah, I don't understand this either. I'd read that it was supposed to happen, but it never has.

The combat in Skyrim is pretty basic, she shouldn't have a problem with that. Just make sure to get the Skyui mod.

I'm excited to see Brink leave the sale page. I hope something better takes its place in the flash deals.

MP1 needs an audio fix which can found on the Steam forums. Both Steam versions work well under Win7. The CD version of MP1 may need to be patched to version 1.05. Not sure if compatibility mode is needed to get it working under Win7.
