Teaching Yoga to a bunch of pampered Facebook employees? Don't make them turn off their phones or you'll be fired. Apparently you can't say "no" to a Facebook employee....it's the rules.

For years, yoga instructor Alice Van Ness has started her classes with a simple request - that students turn their cell phones off. But it proved to be a hard policy to follow for at least one employee, who began tapping away on her phone in the middle of class. And after Van Ness shot her a disapproving look, the instructor found herself out of a job. The 35-year-old San Carlos resident was fired last month after managers at the fitness contractor she worked for explained that saying "no" to Facebook employees is a no-no.

It isn't Yoga if you're on your phone. Call it something else, like "Facebook idiots stretching while distracted". FFS.

Wow..so instructor loses her job because one person can't follow a simple rule....

Currently taking yoga as my college PE course... simple class, very relaxing. Only two things can make you fail; not showing up and using your cell phone in class.

The whole point of yoga is to focus on your body and forget about everything else.

Sounds like someone needs a punch in the throat.

Makes me wanna choke the bitch that was on the phone. Who knows, maybe she's been reading "50 Shades of Gray" and it turns her on. :p

I think there is something in the Constitution guaranteeing the phone owner a right to always have their phone on, and accepting FB connections. Somewhere near the 28th amendment or there about.

Yoga seems about as fun as a figure 4 leg lock....so i'd want to use a cell phone too.

But I'm sure there is more to the story than this....The Yoga Teacher was also likely ugly.

Good book, but there's probably other places to be when you're reading it. :p

Ah yes...our perpetual pandering to whiny bitches who refuse to follow the rules.

I think that the point of conflict was more to do with taking an authoritative position over the students (effective employers), and not so much about the phone incident itself.

a yoga instructor in California? She probably won't be out of a job for long. Not a big deal.

I don't think I would have sacked here though. I think that one should try to be as tolerant as possible over such matters in such places. Myself, after reading that, I would be afraid to work for “Plus One Health Management” & perhaps Facebook.

Good fucking lord, is this fucking serious?

They ask you to turn off your phones cause its disrupting other people.

What's fucking next, facebook employee's are going to get movie ushers fired if they are asked by movie ushers to turn off their cell phones?

Or what about when driving, is facebook employee's going to sue the government when the police pulls them over when using their cell phone when driving?

Wouldn't you... just not go to a Yoga class if you didn't want to go to a Yoga class? Why show up and act like a child?

Leave them be. If we are lucky enough they'll get their sorry asses out of the gene pool as soon as possible. ;)

Usually a contract for teaching a class allows you to make some rules. I don't see why being disrespectful should be ecnouraged.

sooooooo... don't go to Yoga class?

Firing someone for banning phones in a Yoga class is the same as forcing a movie theater to close because they don't allow you to use your cell phones while the show's playing. It entirely defeats the purpose of Yoga.

This has nothing to do with Facebook, so you haters need find something else to do. Or I'll ban you from using your cell phones :-P

There should be a "Say NO to a Facebook Employee" Day. Talk Like a Pirate day is fun but I think this would be entertaining.

The whole thing is absurd, and yet another reason of why I hate people.

It's the same thing as the captain of a ship. If the POTUS or some bigwig CEO or whoeverthefuck is on the ship, they have no power or authority, the captain of the ship does. The yoga teacher is the captain. While you are in class, you follow the rules. Then when you are out of class, you resume normal life.

If the stupid girl with the phone had a family emergency or something, well you leave class and handle the situation. Apparently whatever it was, was not a big deal, as she left to take her call or whatever, and then resumed the rest of the yoga class.

Yes, I would have thought that as an instructor, she would have to give them instructions.

I have no idea what nonsense this is, but I'll have you know we do not allow logical thinking on the western coastline of the United States. Now take your radical thinking elsewhere!

On-topic, just read through the article and the person who was using the phone in-class sounds like a whiny little bitch. They were told once before to put it down, and they did, and then later they picked it up again even though they knew it was prohibited. Then they walked out to continue using their phone and complained to the fitness center. What a fucking tool.

I'm with the Yoga instructor on this one. People go to Yoga to relax, not to fucking have to watch/listen to people mess with their phone. Same thing applies to movie theaters as others have said. It ruins the experience for everyone.

I guess this matters little when posturing and politicking in business is more important than actually getting a job done.

What's being overlooked is that this is a class paid for by Facebook at their office, and often companies that offer programs like these do them during the work day but attendance is "as business allows" so if you get called you get called.

Another story I saw about this case said that the person had picked up there phone, looked at the screen and went in the hall to answer the call or email, which is what people should do, and since neither of the stories I've read said anything about the phone ringing I have to assume it wasn't a case of the ringing disrupting the class.

Finally, the who "It's not important, it's only Facebook" attitude could be part of the reason she got the boot since, afterall Facebook was paying for her to be there.

It was a stern look, she didn't even actually say anything. Nevermind the fact that there are signs specifically saying "Please turn off cell phones during class". Why do we have laws and rules making people turn off cell phones in school classrooms, or in other places. Because it's common fucking decency, that's why.

So yes, since that lady was teaching the yoga class, she has some authority in how her class operates, and if a student was being disruptive, she had every right, under the basis tenant of keeping class in order, to not be distracting to not only the teacher but the rest of the students who were following the rules properly.

That's fine, but at that point you get up and walk out if you need to take a call or check your phone.

If I was running facebook, I would have supported the instructor. To the point of making it company policy to turn off phones during fitness/wellness activities.

That said, I don't run Facebook, maybe their corporate lifestyle encourages 100% communication and contact via phones/IM etc etc. It could be possible it was a term for the contract to provide fitness services and the instructor did not know or just did it anyways.

Personally I don't see how these wellness services could be that effective if 24/7 contact is to be expected, but you never know.

This^^^. The teacher was well within her rights. I hope she sues.

Which from what I read she did, it appears from the reporting that she picked up the phone, looked at it and went into the hall to handle the call, email or message (the stories are not clear which it is.)

And yes I think it is appalling that one bitchy person (you know she got in a huff and went bitching everywhere. Who dares tell ME to turn off my phone, everyone else doesn't matter) can get another person fired like that.

I could understand if the instructor grabbed the phone and broke it or something but come on!
