Thermal Mapping The Retina MacBook Pro

I'm a PC guy. But the apple bashing on this site is becoming stupid and babyish. My dell latitude d620 runs super hot.

I'm coming to this site less and less

I have the exact same laptop as you have and used it for work EVERYWHERE for 3+ years and not once had I thought it was going to burn my skins off. Troll much

By the same token, he's allowed to share his opinion on what Steve posts. Until Steve decides to not let him post anymore, anyway.

He has the privilege to whine about it(for now...) but he most certainly can choose not to read it. If he hadn't even read the title and get all agitated by it, he wouldn't need to whine here right :D

Fucking this! This site is becoming less and less about pushing computing hardware to its limits and more and more of a bash apple/bash facebook scraper site.

To be fair, Apple is becoming less and less about enthusiast computing, what this site is still entirely about. Not much to do in terms of modding and upgrading components when it's all soldered on or glued in.

Upgrade your Mac? Toss it into the trash and buy a new one. Nothing [H]ard about that.

So true

Was expecting a side by side thermal pic for comparison.

i would have that issue with a retina crap book pro, it would be sitting in the trash can waiting for it to be picked up after a nice afternoon at the range.

If you ever plan do this, send it to me first and I will replace it with something you can have more fun with.

Slow news day = Apple bashing

The article itself doesn't bash Apple or anything - in fact, they give the laptop praise on how cool it runs on average.

...but yeah, it was pretty lame how Steve spun the story as though it was "ball meltingly hot". I mean the thing runs cooler than most laptops out there.

...it should be noted that I'm not an Apple guy.

Same here. The funny thing is that Apple products have gotten better and better over the years while the amount of hatred has gotten much much worse around this site. I mean, the machines are expensive but most people who are at all objective can admit that Macbook Pros are one of the best built laptops on the market and have been for a while.

But don't worry, more and more companies are trying their hardest to rip off Apple designs and when these units do come out, the [H] just thinks they are so dandy and original.

Another example of why you should RTFA.

above 100°C?

My GTX480 under load will reach 102C, wouldn't want to hold it in my lap though.

As for the MBP, that's only about 118F, which really isn't that bad, considering the majority of the heat was in a single spot, not the majority.

It's funny that so many of you keep saying rtfa, but the point that some are making, is that the post on the front page of this site was not exactly pro-Apple. (it does not have to be, for the record!)

To be honest, I hate Apple as a company, but I really think that they are helping to move the tech world on in certain ways. Put it this way, after the Air came out, look what Intel et al did to react... They created the Ultrabook specification, and for some, Ultrabooks are really cool devices. We pretty-much have Apple to thank for that.

The same can be said about the new MacBook Pro. Don't we all wish that it wasn't Apple that makes the cutting-edge designs, but maybe HP for instance? But because of Apple, it now hopefully won't be long before Dell, HP or someone else comes up with a "MacBook Pro/Retina" style, well designed laptop for us WIntel folks to play with.

The PC market stagnated years ago. It just became a race to employ cheap, and hopefully faster hardware, in a fucking ugly box. There is nothing wrong with having a kick-ass PC in a good looking box with a high chance of the wife thinking that "well, it looks better than that big old box with all the wires hanging out of it".

But one thing I really want to say, is that I love this site, and have been a daily visitor ever since it started up. I learned allot from the guys here, and have a great love of PC hardware and software because of this cool place. I just wish that there was less of the unnecessary anti-Apple stuff, but hey, it's their site, they can post what they want. It's also cool that they let us all have the freedom of expression here, and don't just ban people for not liking everything they do.

It's not the article it's the thread title. Has there ever been a non sarcastic/ apple hating post in the news section before?

It's obviously for page views, as I seriously doubt it's because of apple hate (from the admins/Kyle). [H] does have an apple subforum so they do realize there is a segment of [H] folks who use their products. Steve just usually posts with sarcasm the majority of the time. No one usually complains when it is a facebook post.

I defended apple with the retina macbook because it was the right thing to do, but folks attacking thermals on a laptop seems a bit ridiculous.

*sits and waits idly by waiting for the Macbook fanboi to be downstruck when Malware programmers take aim and fire all at once*

Macs don't get PC viruses, Cyraxx. I thought we went through this during the "I'm a Mac" ads. They even say so on their website...oh wait...

Generally speaking, the community here is typically rabid anti apple, partly sure to non upgrade nature. I think steve posts more negative stuff about apple because there is a lot out there.

But I laughed at the title, it wae pretty funny.

I guess actually reading the article is too much to ask for.

The article talks about how COOL the fucking thing runs. Yet [H] spun the story as if the machine runs "ball meltingly hot".

Hurr, have you or anyone else that says "rtfa" actually read the fucking article?

He didn't spin anything, he puts sarcastic remarks for everything. Why so butt hurt?

Not butthurt. My point is that the tools saying "RTFA" haven't actually even RTFA at all.

Wait...are you one of the people who said "RTFA" before you even read it yourself? Oh that's right. ;)

Something is very wrong there, then. A 480, let alone any GPU shouldn't be hitting 100+C.

Not for a GTX480 on reference-design air cooling.
For any other GPU, yes, 100C would be damaging, but for the GTX480, that's actually pretty normal.

It idles between 72-81C, which is what a normal GPU would be at under load.
The GTX480 also consumes up to 250 watts @ stock speeds under load, so the TDP is also through the roof.

This is proof you didn't actually READ the article.

And I'm not even going to say why, you can read it yourself.

Stop being purposefully vague - I've read the article. One of two things is happening: either you're full of shit, or I missed something. If I missed something in the article, then tell me what it is I missed.

And I was agreeing that it runs cool and I don't understand why everyone is bashing it and others are defending it and, due to Steve's pretty stupid wording/comment, thinking the article is bashing the thermals of the Macbook.

But please, do go on calling me a tool.

I don't think you're a tool at all. Sure the stuff about melting balls was a little misleading, but the article was pretty decent and objective. It looks like AnandTech's review indicates the thermals inside the MBP are as reasonable as the outside. *shrug* People are sometimes looking for something to get upset over and when there's nothing, they need to invent things.

I have to agree. I've seen a lot of laptops that get much hotter than the new MBP, and while I may not agree with it's price, or any Apple price tag for that matter, I do have to say that the design is very solid and the temperatures were, actually, quite impressive.

My poor legs have suffered greatly under the inferno of my C640. I am not a fan of nuclear laptops even if they were at some point really fast among their peers. The inside pics show a pretty simple cooling design with only a single heat pipe and two radiators and fans. There's really not that much complexity in what Apple did inside to cope with heat.

...and your buns have suffered greatly under the inferno of my hands! :D

Does this mean you'd like a dinner roll?

And stay away from my buns! Those are already claimed by a cat after The Great Kitty Apoclypse.

I do like my dinner rolls like I like my laptop discoloring, golden-brown. :p

So you prefer cats to birds, damn, well, maybe Blue Fox or Red Squirrel will have a better chance with you. ;)

They tell you right on the site that OS X isn't immune to everything. I'm not sure why people have made such a fuss about this issue.

Discoloring laptops? And what chance?! I'll be a few lines of text down talking to wonderfield about how he took a while to get around to my comment at the top of the page and ramble incoherently about misleading ads. kthxbai!

Wow, you took a looong time to respond to that one. And they didn't hafta say it. It was pretty much implied in a commercial to sell products.

Pretty much every company that can get away with stuff like that does it. They advertise right up to the line of a lie, but don't cross it so they can say, "Well we never actually said that directly." *patpats* It's okay though, we know what they were getting at.
