Thermal Mapping The Retina MacBook Pro

That's actually not bad at all compared to my Dell Latitude C640. It has two cooling fans (main CPU HSF fan and a really tiny one to move air through the rest of the chassis) and if I run Daggerfall in DOSbox which is a pretty moderate load, the CPU fan runs pretty fast. Any sort of more modern game that also works the video card results in both fans running and a computer that's way too hot to put in my lap. Even a Targus fan pad doesn't really keep the fans from running at their highest speeds, but I worry about what would happen to the hard drive and other internals without some sort of assistance.

In Apple's defense, they stuffed a lot of power into a relatively thin frame and it manages heat pretty well. I'm curious what the on-die sensors say about the processor and GPU though.

The heat comes out the top of the hinge. The bottom is probably not that bad.

Its ok we should sterilize all mac owners anyway, can’t have them reproducing :)

Anand points out that the thermals on top are much hotter than the thermals on the bottom.

The bottom is noticeably cooler than the prior version while the top is slightly warmer.

Wow you could roast bacon on that thing... with all that inane heat cycling i wonder how much it will wear down on the GPU and CPU.

The kernel_task process tells the CPU to shut up, sit down, and do nothing until it's cooled off. Don't know if this happened in previous MBPs or not, but it's lovely to see your encoding framerate go from 40 FPS to 3 out of the blue because your CPU is "overheating" at 60*C. I love many things about the new MBP Retina, but the thermal restrictions are not one of them. Make it .25" larger and let the CPU breathe so I can actually use the damned thing!

Wondered how long it would take for one of you to crawl out of the woodwork...

he's not wrong. Nothing gets you guys more riled up than an apple story, which is exactly why this site, and pretty much every tech sites runs them like crazy because it gets more page views. Quite ironic actually.

Looking at the Japanese Apple site, it doesn't look like the MacBook Pro Retina has a different keyboard layout than the US model. So...

What exactly is that thermal image a picture of? It's not a MBP Retina. The spacebar is too short and there's an extra key in there!

I'm a PC guy. But the apple bashing on this site is becoming stupid and babyish. My dell latitude d620 runs super hot.

I'm coming to this site less and less

I guess actually reading the article is too much to ask for.

My balls rest under the trackpad. How do you hold your laptop?

when has any apple product ever been about being able to "use the damn thing"

Everyone knows that apple products are about looking cool, spending lots of money, and accomplishing less than you otherwise would in the name of looking slick.

Unless you scoop your balls and put them on top of the keyboard, this is not an issue at all. Keep the Apple Hate incoming
Prior to reading your post I have to inclination to do such a thing ... after reading it ... I have to admit ... I am curious.

Wondered how long it would take for one of you to crawl out of the woodwork...

Nope, you're wrong. I said this because the fact that every laptop that I have EVER owned bets well of 50oC after an hour or so. This site also has a history of anti-Apple postings on the front page, which is cool by me.

I guess actually reading the article is too much to ask for.

Noting to do with the article.

Why is it news? Show me a fucking laptop that does not get toasty. I have 6 in this house, all different brands and ages, and they all get just as hot as the MacBook.

Yeah, you should go to BetaNews, they started living off bashing Apple stuff. It's all about the page views.

I think the point IronCross is making is that the article isn't at all bashing the thermals and he was encouraging you to read it so you'd understand that it might not be prudent to go on the defensive over something that doesn't require such a response.

I will say it again. My comment was NOTING to do with the article that was linked to, it was the fact that it was posted on the front page of this website, as nothing more than page bait.

Fucking this! This site is becoming less and less about pushing computing hardware to its limits and more and more of a bash apple/bash facebook scraper site. I'm not much of a fan for either company either, but what really gets old is seeing posts like these:
Slow news day = Apple bashing
insta-interpreted as something only a diehard Apple brown-nose would say, thus the predictable barrage of "LOL LOOK AT THE BUTTHURT FANBOI GO QQ MOAR!!! crAPPLE!crAPPLE!crAPPLE!crAPPLE!" replies.

Okay, but this from your other post kinda makes me think it does have at least something to do with the article:

Show me a fucking laptop that does not get toasty. I have 6 in this house, all different brands and ages, and they all get just as hot as the MacBook.

Why would you even mention a "laptop that does not get toasty" if you weren't talking about an article that is about the thermal measurements of a laptop?

..it was the fact that it was posted on the front page of this website, as nothing more than page bait.

I'm pretty sure that most web sites that post news are doing that same thing. The people that run [H] need to pay for their boats, cars, and jetskis somehow. No one is forcing you to view the site or comment in the forum. Exposing yourself to it and getting upset about it is pretty silly given that you're letting words on a screen evoke an irrational emotional response without remembering you can always go to another site or even turn your computer off.

Huh? Steve posts something positive about apple, then you put words in his mouth? Is this something you do in every argument?

Yeah, you should go to BetaNews, they started living off bashing Apple stuff. It's all about the page views.

*sniff* *sniff* These guys are such meanies!!

In case you didn't RTFA, here is a summary: "For most uses, the Retina MacBook Pro runs nearly silently and cool as ice, but it’s still something of a toaster oven when it is pushed to its limits."

Huh? Steve posts something positive about apple, then you put words in his mouth? Is this something you do in every argument?

His comment wasn't exactly positive, but yeah...

If you don't like what Steve posts, no one is forcing you to read it.

What is really funny is that, nowadays, the arguments get started by some troll posting "Lol more [H] Apple bashing " and then people calling them out as being an Apple troll. So really Apple trolls are the ones starting the anti-Apple arguments. :p

Why would you even mention a "laptop that does not get toasty" if you weren't talking about an article that is about the thermal measurements of a laptop.

I'm willing to very he did not read the article. Knee jerk reaction to steve posting anything about apple and puting a sarcastic title on it.

Steve posts do tend to lean records the apple bashing side, much like a site that supports the ps3 would do towords the 360, but he also posts positive stuff about apple.

Honestly if the only reason you are coming to [H] is for the daily article links steve posts so you can say hes wrong (when he doesn't make the news...) you are coming here for the wrong reason.

His comment wasn't exactly positive, but yeah...

Hehe he posts sarcastic comments on all of his posts (will most)!

I laughed at the title, if this wants to complain, complain about kotaku...

It's news because it's showing that the heat characteristics improved over prior models, which is good news for some of us at least.

Toasty notebooks are common. Apple or Windows based. Well, it is the same hardware inside the box, just packed different.

The worrying thing is men using these on laps. This really is not good for your balls and general ability to reproduce. The reason your bits dangle on the outside is to keep them cool. Cooking them at 40\50\60 degrees is not good.

This is one of the reasons why they are called "notebooks" now instead of "laptops". They really don't want to sit on your lap. The air vents, especially on Windows boxes, tend to be underneath. These get suffocated on a lap.

Stop cooking your b0llocks - put a book, tray, bit of wood, ANYTHING between you and that device to let it get some air and stop cooking ya bits.

Obviously.... a Cold Winter in the North is a different matter... These kinds of notebooks must be more fun to own in Alaska than California.
