The manufacturer also has a spec on how much power draw to expect when choosing the AC adapter for the unit, I imagine a 5v fan is within their allocated overhead but it may not last as long as you think.

I'll tell you this now, the unit doesn't pull 4A, no where near 4amps. Trust me a 5v fan isn't going to hurt it at all.

Better than Sonicwall or Cisco asa ?

Are they priced higher ?

They are higher than a sonicwall, not sure about an ASA. An ASA has a purpose and is a great firewall, but I think their UTM Sucks

Did you buy that on purpose? Hopefully you lost a bet or something.

I haven't saw your big Cisco rocks speech (insert other appliance here) sucks? Whats the deal?

I agree, as a firewall they are the best I have used. If I had to pick my worst device I would have to say I HATE watchguards!!

Recently setup a lab/study environment at work with 4x Cisco 3750's and 2x R510's. Running a 2008R2 forest with about 15 member servers on top of ESXi 4.1.

Also running RSTP, DAI, IPSG, DHCP SNOOPING, PAgP,HSRP, IP SLA, Port-Sec and a lot of other protocols on the switch fabric. Trying to pull an old NetApp from production to use as shared storage for the VMDK's.

Something dash gets a boner over. Actually two things, Dell/DRAC and XenServer.

I love iDRAC's so much, I practically upgraded 15 ESX hosts to ESXi 4.1 at work without leaving my desk a few months ago.

Doing some testing with the new iDRAC 6's now, so exciting!

I have 3 of them sitting in my garage, lemme know :)

sent you a pm, Only down fall with the 2400's is that the subscriptions are $$$$$$$$$$$ and depending on their last subscription it start's from that time.

Well, a few weeks ago I started using the TZ210, since I got another free year's subscription and probably many more years. I'm actually going to use it more.

In for details on the free Sonicwall subs :D I miss my NetExtender SSL VPN from my old job. SO nice!!! I've also found their gui pretty easy to work with, I'd love to put one in at my house. It's just hard to compete with the free linux based offerings out there.

installed and powered up a dell powerconnect 2724

for about 3 minutes

its coming back out for disassembly, I need to get a new fan, the delta in it is way to loud

fan = easy to change, id put the fan at 5v, THEN make a plastic shield to guide the air over heatsinks. One thing i see that lacks in switches and products, if there was a shield in it to guide the air, they could make them much quieter.

its already a 5V fan.

I just ordered 3 replacements on Amazon for 15 bucks, 2 Scythe's and a SUNON

none of them have quite as high a CFM rating, but are rated way lower on the DB's.....

I'll have to monitor the temps I guess, can always wire in 2 if needed

My hackish Arduino based environmental control device. :D

I used the same case for my hvac control device. I need to find a cover or something to screw into it. I'm thinking a piece of thin plywood or something. The device will actually sit "up side down" so the top terminals are accessible.

I coded a basic terminal interface to get the readings, so I just have to code the actual C++ app that will take the readings via serial. I can then use Pandora or other monitoring software to monitor and log the data. I'm still debating on if I want to use Pandora though. I'm not impressed with the fact that I cannot set a range, I can only monitor weather the value is too high, or too low, but not both. The graphing is nice though.

edit:

Just tested it in Linux and it works without any special drivers! This is great. It suddently hit me that it could require some special driver which would be hard to find/install so I just tested it but it runs beautifully.

Ran across a box of these at work:

That's interesting, they are so new it just seems like something you wouldn't run across a random box of.. seems like something someone would be actively using for a project or something

There's a lot of interesting stuff in the building. I went up to the 11th floor and found a 6513, 6509, 30 or so fully loaded EMC/netapp FC SANs, dozens of dual/quad socket servers, and so on...all just abandoned. I'll see about posting some pictures of that.

So what you are saying is, you can bring it home with no one noticing :p .

Why take it home when I can stick it in the datacenter on the ground floor for free? :p Doubt anyone would notice stuff missing, but I'm not going to take anything off site since I have no idea who actually owns everything (we are the only tenant in the building however) and stealing is bad.
if they decide to liquidate that stuff youll have to let me know.
Will do if I find out more about ownership. XENPAK transceivers (Cisco branded) will be going up for sale shortly if that interests you however (which is why I was allowed to take them home to photograph).

Blew a power supply on a spare cat 6507 the other day I was testing... everything was running and I was working on the secondary sup and out of no where hear a band and see the fan stop spinning on that PSU.

Made ya jump an inch or two.

Nacho,
What are you using the vtwin-2's for? We have something like 250 of those. Surpizingly we have only had a handful of issues. (Bad PS, backplane, motherboard or two.)

have you considered using any existing software? what are you driving reasons for rolling your own?

probably left from a company that went bankrupt

Everything is like over 1k. I looked at Netguardian and a few others, but they're pricy!

The Arduino board was like 30 bucks. If I need more inputs (like double what I have) I could get the "mega" version which is still under 100 bucks. So given this is custom hardware I pretty much have to write the software for it, but it will be pretty simple.

My home one is just finally looking clean... for a while i was going to try and get Dash to come redo it. lol.

They're not very new, but they are quite expensive. I wouldn't mind finding a box of 10G LR optics laying around...

My home rack is kinda a mess right now, but I've kinda been letting it go because I plan to build an enclosure around it and add proper cable management. Now I don't really have anything to properly hold down and organize cable short of tie wraping against the rails which is not ideal. I don't have the budget for it now though, I've already spent more money than I should have on my big UPS. But at least I have 4+ hours run time now so I can ride through most of the outages. Even tempting to add 2 more batteries to double the run time. :p

do you need to hide your purchases like me :)

Thankfully not, I'm single, but I do need to start to save up the 14k it will cost to dig up my basement to fix the leaks. :D So far I keep blowing most of my cash on toys. My attitude will change pretty quick once that job is done and I have that amount on the credit line.

I also need a new car. Basically two big purchases that I wish I did not have to make, but sith happens. :p

Did a cat6 run with my dad today, they bought a new house and it has a shed out back, He wanted to have his WAP in the house, but the cable modem phone modem & untangle firewall in the shop on a shelf.

So after screwing around for 2 hours trying to get the cable to go down, we started to dig and find the stupid elbow :(

Found it broke it, then did the fish, at the other end, was another elbow, but we got it through after some cutting and pulling..

We ran a 1/4" piece of teflon tube for small water for him to have & cat6 cable.

Dash - where your dad's house is do you get any lightning? By any, I mean any at all? If so, what you just showed here is quite dangerous.
