Verizon Says the Internet Will 'Change Forever' June 18th

Verizon is doing big promotions where I live right now and expanding into new neighborhoods. They had a tent in the grocery store parking lot near my house today. I stopped and talked to them because I don't have FIOS at my house. Apparently they are adding new houses almost daily and the sale people there are personally calling and checking which new ones are added every other day. They told me I should have it at my house withing a few weeks. And are giving $250 gift cards to cover any broken contract fees you may incur when switching.

Yes, when I was asking if I get an incentive for switching to Verizon from AT&T they mentioned the promo FIOS was giving for switching. When asked if they knew when they would break into phoenix they said sometime in 2-3 years. So they are still expanding. I wonder if Verizon was able to obtain one of the dark networks underground to by pass AT&T's reign on the telephone poles?

I wish FIOS was available in my area, but it's not. Verizon apparently isn't into retrofitting older neighborhoods. Cable is the best we can do here.

free bandwidth for porn downloads

lol

unless they give free or super cheap broadband, it will be the same crap as we have today

Probably a change in price structure (more expensive) and removal of data caps, that's be my guess. No caps would put them way ahead of the competition and gain them tons of customers in an instant.

If Verizon came to my community it would be like the allies liberating France.

For me it'd be like the Greeks/Romans integrating a small secluded civilization that had no contact with the outside world on account of living in a low lying are encircled by nigh-impassable mountains, and so essentially leaving them stuck in the Stone Age :p

I'd love to give Fios a shot, but my area is uverse. Although uverse was fast, connection drops were far too frequent in peak hours.

Looking at their actual pricing, it seems like their lower tiers are getting more expensive. More speed on the high-end is great, but at $200+ per month hardly a bargain. It's also worth noting that the extra speed would quickly become useless if they follow the industry trend toward bandwidth caps. I'm sure they would love for people to be racking up overages costing $10/gig at 300Mbps.

$200/month for 300/65 uncapped definitely is a bargain.

Overblown marketing hype.
Only if you live in an area that currently doesn't have FIOS service available.

Grandfathered Unlimited plan, bitches.
Yeah man! Can I get a ^5?!?

Wow, so Verizon actually has an influence the Internet?

{some quote about bandwidth caps}
/thread

Whatever they announce gets nullified by that.
End Thread Exception Error. There are no caps on residential FIOS sevice. I download hundreds of gigs of data over my connection and never received a phone call, letter, or reduction in speed.

Most certainly is! I called Verizon to ask about the speed increases and was told it wasn't happening in my market until Fall the earliest. She offered an upgrade from 50/20 Triple Play to 150/35 (currently $200 a month by itself), which I jumped on. I don't know what's up with the Verizon hate and odd remarks about the pricing but I'm getting a hell of a deal in NYC of all places. YMMV but each time I've called with an inquiry or change to my plan, I've walked away with some sort of credit or discount. They've treated me well so far.

How about they cover mor ethen 0.00000001% of the internet market so you know, people can actually get it beside the tiny tiny amount that can already?

Increasing speeds don't mean jack to people that can't even get it.

Screw FIOS. Worst customer service ever. Even after I managed to cancel my service, and got the $150 ETF refund for a contract I never had, they continued to bill me for 3 consecutive months AFTER I turned in my equipment, and threatened to send it to collections if I didn't pay. Took many phone calls to get my money back.

On top of that their service is very expensive, and once your promos run out they refused to give me any kind of discounts and would rather I just cancel.

Just have TWC internet only now. No contracts, no taxes/rental fees and a flat $49.99/mo, and they even gave me a $100 visa gift card to switch.

I wouldn't mind trying out FIOS but it's not in my area. The only decent provider here is Comcast and I hate their guts. My wife and I are on a rotation with them since they raise the prices after the year is up and doing this keeps us on the promotional pricing.

Wow that sucks for you man. I can understand the frustration , here is the website for Wildblue since it sounds like the best option for you for now unless you move.

They have a 25GB a month plan for $129. There is a one time setup fee of $49 but there is no installation fee or hardware charge. On average it seems people get the speeds they pay for but as you know the latency is over a second which means its impossible for you to game online or do VOIP. But you can download a fair amount and stream Netflix without issue.

Here is the coverage map for the 12Mbps service :

It shows plenty of coverage in Tenn so you should be good to go. Its better than nothing at least and cheaper than LTE or 3G.

Yes... :(:( lol

Well, ok it's more like 40 baud, and not even then is it ALWAYS that bad, but my cell coverage is so poor where I'm at that the speeds are commonly 5-8K/s (usually in the evening). I used to have 6mbit DSL back in MN. I DIE on the days when the trees are blowing just right an I'm able to get 120K/s (trust me, blowing leaves heavily effects signal, as pathetic as that sounds it's that poor of a signal to start with!).

Unless Verizon has something to live up to the hype, I think Wildblue has probably done the most to change the Internet this year. Boosting speeds from 1.5M down for $80 a month to 12M down for $50 is pretty damn good progress, even if it is just satellite Internet.

Verizon won't step foot in about 90% of North Carolina. Time Warner, Windstream and AT&T have the entire state locked in contract for utility rights.

Fucking sucks. Fastest you can get here in 50/5 and it costs $150 a month. What a fucking joke. I pay $44 a month for 12/1. Shit internet by shit providers that don't give a shit about their customers.

While I agree that 44 for 12/1 Internet is poop 12/1 Internet is not that bad. Man seems some people are spoiled. I remember dealing with 28k modems. THAT was slow.

50/5 Internet is nice but very few sites will saturate that connection or serve you at that speed constantly.

That is so untrue. I have a 150/65 FiOS connection and MANY sites can saturate it. I have no idea where people get this "idea" from that the web can't handle your incredibly awesome speed

Your connection really only gets stoned walled once you hit 1Gbps , but the nonsense of 50 meg somehow being "too much" for many sites is complete bullshit , no offense.

Great. Another "You Will" advertisement. At least they didn't do it on a Beach.

We never really did, btw...

So it's Monday and the Internet still works like one would expect from something invented by Al Gore. Did I miss anything?

only 28k? My first modem was 300 baud and required a rotary phone to sit on top of it. I thought I was livin la vida loca when we finally got a 1200 baud modem.

In today's world, with infrastructure the way it is, 12/1 is slow. We're being unnecessarily choked and price gouged for no reason other than lack of competition and utility rights being given to only the highest bidder. How can we have a free market if all but one in the market are shut out?

I think this was delayed because they're waiting for approval from Al who is currently saving baby seals in Antarctica.

I wonder if this mystery announcement has anything to do with the fact I noticed my Cox Cable connection went Synchronous this weekend.

I have the 20/3 plan. I noticed this weekend it's running at 20/20. I'm in NoVA.

I would gladly pay that $150 a month just to get the 12/1 you're complaining about. Try paying $60 a month just to get 1.6 Mbps while being throttled at certain times of the day by Verizon for a while and see how much you enjoy that.

Oh, well that explains everything. Maybe the baby seals have something to do with the Verizon's about to be released "The New Internet" product. :)

I can pay $100+ a month to get 50 down and 5 up. LOL, right.

How much are the South Koreans paying for the same speeds we're talking about here? What a joke.

Verizon will be making a major announcement on Monday billed as changing the Internet forever. The company already announced an increase in speed for FiOS and the pricing tiers were leaked last week, so what in this world will make the announcement so revolutionary?

Are they upgrading the park where I live from s#!tty 1.5Mb AT&T, to fiber and a freedom of choice for provider?

It's true on my end. I have a 30/3 connection and there are few sites, that i visit, that will actually deliver anything at that speed . It's possible you have a different experience, but to claim what someone says is untrue while you have NOTHING to back it up is the only "complete bullshit" I see here.

[sarcasm] No offense. [/sarcasm]
