Wow, who would've thought that Comcast of all companies would be on the side of the pirates? Ahem, I mean "alleged" pirates. ;)

Comcast has run out of patience with the avalanche of BitTorrent lawsuits in the United States. The ISP is now refusing to comply with court-ordered subpoenas, arguing that they are intended to “shake down” subscribers by coercing them to pay settlements. Copyright holders have responded furiously to Comcast’s new stance, claiming that the ISP is denying copyright holders the opportunity to protect their works.

It costs Comcast money, pretty simply. I don't think it's their job to help police content.

Pretty much. I don't think Comcast gives two shits what you download as long as you keep paying the bill every month. Plus, I would imagine that people might start considering alternative ISPs if they keep getting flooded with copyright notices...

Where's my popcorn ?!
This is gonna be good.

comcast has enough shit to handle with their own NBC Universal shit being pirated.

Everyone else takes a back seat.

We've already seen these "media companies" and the RIAA go after innocent people before, flat out extortion in most cases. "Pay us or pay your lawyers, either way you pay." I'd like to see judges punish these guys and make them pay people's legal fees for having to defend themselves against this abuse.

As much as I hate Comcast and hate being forced into being one of their customers, (it's either Comcast cable and internet or no TV and Century Link internet for me, and believe me Century Link is far, far worse than Comcast) I applaud Comcast, mildly, for this.

1) It costs Comcast money to do it
2) Shouldn't be the job of any ISP
3) Comcast don't give a crap as long as we pay the bills owed

However, they keep up with that attitude, we may see Comcast fade away, quickly.

imho smart move

you dont let a a rabid dog unleashed to bite the subscribers that pay you.

you put down the dog if necessary

Comcast will get paid to do it will be the outcome. Then watchout.

Hope I'm wrong, but they could just be looking for a bounty.

+1

Reduce costs / Increase revenue / PR move

All with one stroke....

More scary----
ISP's open up a copyright infringement division. Act on behalf of the "copyright holders." ISP's send "settlement" infringement notices to subscribers. "Copyright holders" get a cut and are happy.

Like Comcast's response but highly suspect it has anything to do with protecting their subscribers because of their good nature.

I wish I wasn't so suspicious of Comcast on this. I agree with you guys, there is some anterior motive here for sure.

But hurray for now.

so..... that giant asteroid is going to be hitting the earth any second now.

I feel like the motive is one big step in turning its public image around. Comcast will not suddenly become honest or giving, but unexpected good PR like this ought to make many people reevaluate.

I've reevaluated them, too, and I came up with the same evaluation as before. (

I this day and age i have to give the Rocky answer "sue me for what?" bunch of assholes the lot of them!

That's what I don't get. I'm all for what Comcast is doing but they do have media that gets pirated as well. Most likely they'll police their own content, but won't bother with everyone else.

Well at least it moves Comcast down the shit ISP ladder.

And it all makes since now. This is all about who foots the bill for copyright protection. If the riaa can force the isp's to do their bidding, then there is no reason to push as hard for anti piracy measures on their end, plus they will have the ability to bully "violators." Even if they are innocent.

I received one of those DMCA extortion emails about 4 months ago for downloading a MILF torrent. "Pay $200 or we'll take it to court" Welp, nothing came of it.

Most if not all the "Shake Down" requests are coming from porn peddlers. MPAA/RIAA for now have been focusing more on stopping piracy at the source vs. going after grandma and printers. So no surprise Comcast is less then helpful. These fishing expeditions cost them money and the goodwill of their customers and it only benefits porn companies and lawyers.

You guys are thinking small. Since this is too costly, RIAA/MPAA will propose a solution of giving themselves access to ISP logs through a newly anointed government agency created by their friends in Congress, thereby removing the bulk of the expense from the ISP and giving them even more ammo to spam like mad.

YAY! Going to switch to Comcrap this weekend from ATT. ...dont have many choices, but i think its the best I have got.

Yeap, all those subpeona's are another packet of work plopped on their desk. I would say fuck you too.

The court system is designed for those with means, not those with rights.

LeninGHOLA hit it right on the head, it costs them money, it all goes back to the article a few weeks ago asking if people should charge for processing DMCA requests. It wasn't to hurt the little guys, it was to help with the deluge of requests. Just like the Creditu Beuro claims lifelock puts and undue burden on their network.

I will also take this one step further, not saying that there is a problem as bad as they speak and that this is working, but to say that if people are afraid to use their connection they will use it less. Less use means less of a chance to charge overages and maybe even lower speed tier adoption, all bad for the provider.

Wow, never thought I'd say this but...way to go, Comcast.
Really.

Comcast will get paid to do it will be the outcome. Then watchout.
Yea, I was thinking this. Or Oldie's government take........

Poor porn publishers. On one side they got people downloading all their stuff for free, on the other side they got big ISPs not giving a damn.

They're really taking it from both ends.

But more importantly. Comcast is moving heavily into online streaming services. Streaming services don't suffer from pirating because once you have your internet connection through Comcast, you can just watch everything for free. Like all NBC shows for example.

They make far more money from that than selling DVD copies of NBC shows.

Maybe someone at Comcast got the memo about not being able to combat new technology with old outdated laws but instead innovate technology to help thrive and survive in a technologically advancing world.........probably not but it would be nice if that memo did land on someones desk somewhere.

This.

Please don't think Comcast is doing this for the good of the "Consumers" as they've proven year after year they don't give a shit about you , they just want your money... all of it.
