Hi, i would like swap out the stock heat sink and fan from my intel 775 processor. However, i wanna go cheap and just replace the fan (leaving the same heat sink). is this possible? advised?

Is it possible? Yes. Anything is possible with alittle ingenuity and some duct tape. Advised? No. The fan from intel is typically a very high quality fan. If you're going to do it, just swap the whole heatsink.

Not really possible with stock coolers. The fan housing is molded into the retention mechanism. Besides the problem with the stock cooler isn't so much the fan, but rather the size and construction of the heatsink itself. It's designed to perform just well enough to keep the processor within a certain temperature, and no better.

thanks for the answers guys; i know i will have to upgrade my mainboard soon and was wondering if there a good and more importantly quiet 'generic' cpu fan cooler that is 'future proof'?

A lot of high quality aftermarket heatsinks come with old and new socket brackets. I got the Hyper N 220 and that came with both an AM2/AM2+/AM3/AM3+ bracket, as well as a 775 bracket and even the newer Intel sockets.

The CM Hyper 212+ and variants (eg. EVO) are generally considered the best value at the moment and are really versatile in terms of mounting.
