Mass Effect 3 Discussion Thread

They need to get their servers in order. I get all sorts of errors when I try to buy packs from the store. Then last night I ran into this creepy problem where a bunch of my former squadmates were somehow all present in a later game but dead. It was pretty weird. This was on that dark moon map. There were also random banshees and brutes just standing around, even though the official enemy was Geth.

I haven't touched multiplayer in a week or more. I've been making texture mods and downloading mods for the single player game.

Dan_D I'm dubbing you the official real life Shepard for all the previous pages I've read. Now go knock on Bioware's door and kick some balls in so we can get our DLC.

ooh, that sounds interesting: texture mods. Definitely want the skinny on that.

There's a pretty good thread on the bioware forums for texture mods:

http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/323/index/9735492/1

It's a work in progress, and the guy doing it seems to be working in a random order, but there are quite a few good ones there.

I'm almost more impressed by the guy's face code. That's possibly the first male shepard I've seen that didn't look like it had some irregular number of chromosomes. They basically made it impossible to look like a human being without using the default face.

I feel like I'm the only one who played Single Player and then stopped...

You aren't the only one.

One playthrough for the story, one on insanity just to do it, then haven't touched it since.

Haven't played any MP either.

I honestly hadn't played much MP in years until ME3's demo came out. There's not really anything great about it, but it's got the mindless fun thing going for it and I often need that after a long day. I enjoy playing with people who enjoy having fun; I hate playing with people who just want to farm for space credits (seemingly the majority of people who play in gold matches).

Anymore, I usually take my Asari Vanguard and start my own public room, either gold or silver depending on my level. Then I go ahead and solo the first round or so, and by rounds 2 or 3 I usually have a full squad.

Every now and again nobody will show up, so I'll get to try to do 11 rounds on gold by myself. I've yet to do it, but I don't think I'm that far off from getting it done, either.

Yeah the MP isn't super awesome, but it's still fun. Kind of an add on type of thing but I enjoy it well enough.

Whatever is going to happen here, ironically, I think EA may be wearing the white hat in this story like I expected.

What do I mean?

These games sell very well. "Ending" the series is nonsense from a financial point of view even if you end the Shepherd character arc. There's no way in hell EA is going to want that gravy train to just stop and go away regardless of anything else and the outcry that came from a LOT of gamers across all platforms spelled trouble. No way around it.

I think it's like I figured: We're going to get some nice Shadow Broker and Overlord caliber DLC, get things cleaned up, and before too long we'll see plans for a Mass Effect 4 even if it's Mass Effect: The Next Generation or some such and all this is going to gloss over nicely.

Agreed.

I could even see EA farming out development on a ME4 to another studio. ME and Bioware are both known commodities, so they could maximize their exposure by having some random studio do a new ME and Bioware work on a new franchise.

Or they'll pull what Activision does with Call of Duty and have alternating studios work on the franchise at the same time so they can release more games at reduced intervals. Either thought is scary. If you think the quality of ME3 fell short, imagine what would happen if they pawned the series off on some other studio.

Obsidian would be a great dev if someone would force them to completely revamp their Q&A process.

KOTOR 2 had a lot of potential, it just was never finished.

KOTOR 2 was another potentially great game that suffered from being rushed out the door. That's not what DLC for ME3 needs, nor a sequel to the game.

Bioware has stated that this is not the end to the Mass Effect universe. Just to Shepards' story. They made a giant universe with infinite amount of lore - I'm sure they'll think of something cool. There's much more that they can do other than Shepard/Reapers.

People who say that obviously don't recall KOTOR 2.
No joke, I cringe every time I see that. Well, first I make sure I read the comment correctly and then wonder if they're talking about a different Obsidian. :p

hey up to the ending, KOTOR 2 was freaking amazing. the only xbox rpg i like more is the first mass effect.

:(

Dear EA, please eff off and leave good studios alone. I want NEW content, not Mass Effect 10: Zombie Reapers!

KOTOR 2 was a good game that got pushed out the door by LucasArts before it was 3/4 of the way done. If they had allowed them to actually finish what they started, I think it would have been every bit as good as the first. I really need to reinstall them both on my PC(with the fan mod to fix KOTOR 2) and get my Star Wars fix.

Obsidian's onyx engine seems pretty solid and stable btw. It's weird not having CTD's or massive bugs with an Obsidian game. Too bad DS3 had to be over the top consolized.

MP, of course.

2 new maps (Thessia and the Salarian planet)
A few new weapons
6 new characters

Still havent beaten the game (at the end, just waiting for the new ending dlc). Hopefully sometime soon...

[Late to the discussion]

Just as most others, I was thoroughly disappointed (understatement) with the way the story ended.

However, the only reason thsi game remeains in the tray is because of multiplayer. Cooporative tower defense so super, super fun. I tried it out only at my brother's urging and am glad that I did. I like the fact that the difficulty increases by an order of maginuted between bronze, silver, and gold.

Wow. That is a severely depressing article for a Bioware fan.

Dorian Kieken said:
"For Bioware, originally, making the game was just about the people making the game, and that has a lot of merit - I have a lot of belief in team self-organisation," he says. "But it was to such an extreme that the games were not very well organised in a lot of ways. The first Mass Effect took five years to make and had one production person for most of the project, and a second by the very end. Mass Effect 2 had twelve or thirteen production people."

To most people, I think that would signal the move towards beauracracy, not better organization.

"[The trust] is something very new... I have a lot of respect for John Riccitiello. He is trying to move the company towards a vision that is very smart, with a sort of city-state culture. Basically, you're accountable only to generate revenue. I like that relationship of responsibility."

That sounds terrible. "I don't care about quality, I don't care about public opinion, I just care about money." That kind of mindset leads to the next quote.

Matthew Handrahan said:
Ultimately, this uncertainty has created an internal culture built upon pushing at its own limitations. In the last few years BioWare has developed and launched an MMO, implemented a cross-platform strategy encompassing mobile games and social networks, and, with Mass Effect 3, made its first attempt at an online multiplayer mode. These are experiments and learning experiences, some more successful than others, but if BioWare is to keep refining its core competency of making high-end RPGs it needs to mitigate risk by expanding its business in other directions.

Bioware goes from making High quality games that maybe don't have ginormous financial success to making watered down, attract the widest audience for most profit games. This guy seems totally deluded, or trying really hard to spin.

^Yeah, I don't really understand the mindset, I guess. They made it to where they are because they've made high quality RPGs in the past, so moving forward they're going to branch out and make multiplayer 3rd person shooters, MMOs, and mobile games?

Well the alternative to that really is EA trying to micromanage BioWare and trying to steer the creative process towards what they think will make more money. People try to blame EA for everything from the ending to the ammo system, but at the end of the day EA isn't forcing these decisions.

The only thing better would be if EA said "Here's a pile of cash, go make a game. We don't care whether it makes money or not as long as you think it's good." And that's just not going to happen in this day and age.

I disagree. I think the problem is that EA says "Make a game that will make $[this] much money. If you don't, you will incur penalties." Now, if there wasn't set specific profitability goals for game releases, it could be different.

What companies like EA do is try to completely eliminate the risk out of making games. What that means, is generally eliminating experimentation and innovation. Sequels over original IPs. Elimination of features that may not have worked quite as intended, rather than polishing and fixing the original idea.

If you have a risk (experimentation/innovation) in your game, then you are increasing chances that a game will not meet budget and profit expectations. You make EA mad, EA restricts future contracts, etc etc.
