So what were you doing with your time when you were 19? Well for physics student Aisha Mustafa at Sohag University, it’s designing a spacecraft propulsion system utilizing quantum physics, electrical and chemical reactions to replace rocket gas propulsion systems. Warp 3 Mister Crusher, make it so. :D

The new invention, analysts say, is expected to make space travels, easier, cheaper and faster in future.

Geniuses can be found anywhere in the world. The challenge is giving them access to education, and giving the world access to them.

Did someone just actually use zero point energy?

Nope.
Nope.
Nope.

No.
Was just about to post something along these lines...

Got to the term "zero point energy" and basically stopped reading.

So now we call out the Stargate teams or the Battleship Nadesico crew because right now zero point is just oh so realistic. The idea is zero point + solar sail + other micro energy sail + traditional chemical propulsion + ? = profit! ... er um energy savings! ... er um traditional chemically powered space rocketry plus lots of squandered grant money.

Look, all of this is WAY over my head; but I suspect it's also way over all your heads too. Just because the whack jobs out there have given the concept of zero point energry a bad rap doesn't mean it's completely flawed / impossible / whatever. For gods sake, Einstein was involved with this in the begining. Many things we take for granted were, at one time, deemed impossible and purely in the realm of dreamers and crackpots. Suggest that the earth and planets revolve around the sun? Blasphmey! (Just ask old Galileo) Suggest that the world is round and not flat? Lunacy! Send a man to the moon? Impossible! Pick a small device and talk to someone with a similar device anywhere in the world? Witchcraft! Get the idea yet?

If we don't have brilliant people out there pushing the limits, then we will never progress. Even if their ideas are flawed (I have no clue in this case), they can in turn lead the people involved, or those that read about it, to vastly improved ideas as a result.

Honestly, for fucks sake. The girl is 19 years old! WTF were you doing at 19?!

Take a look at these Wiki pages. Suggest you take some asprin first. :p

Agreed, we did have brilliant people working on shit like this... and by working, I mean ACTUALLY WORKING, says so right in the article

The invention is related to a hypothetical concept of a jet propulsion called “Differential Sail”, theoretically created by NASA’s retired professor Marc G. Millis — who led NASA breakthrough propulsion physics project.
BPP branch of NASA had it's funding cut sometime ago with, and it was actually a decent branch... while maybe a bit advanced considering we couldn't do shit to get into orbit in the first place, but IIRC they did accept people to submit ideas that did end up going through the ringer if they seemed feasible.

Honestly FFS, what were you doing at 19 years old? Because I sure as fuck was dreaming up outlandish shit as well. I came up with a way to pinpoint where a hole was in a space craft that was caused by a micrometeorite, and I was stoned when I did it :p

Read your links down around the part where it talks about "free energy" and perpetual motion machines. There's a reason why this apparently revolutionary technology story isn't lighting the academic/scientific community afire.

I'm not sure what her age has to do with anything, aside from maybe making it more forgiveable assuming this story is as empty as it appears. Any physics undergrad can "invent" something; they know just enough to get themselves into trouble. They can sound intelligent to the general public, appear credible based on their school affiliation, but things like 'conservation of energy'? ehh.. just details the public is not concerned about. She's only 19 gosh darnit!

Zero point energy isn't flawed as a concept, it's quite reasonable for it to exist, and it explains some physical effects we observe at super-cold temperatures.

The problem comes when you try to extract that energy. Lots of crackpots have attempted to use zero point energy for actual work (like adding enough energy to a perpetual motion machine to keep it spinning forever). Theories that attempt to explain the workings of zero point energy give way to the law of conservation of energy, which makes it impossible to use zero point energy for any actual work.

And unfortunately if one were to succeed in extracting zero-point energy from an area of space they would expose the true vacuum and set off a vacuum metastability event that would destroy the universe as we know it.

I for one am not as closed minded to say if it works or not I cannot judge because I do not know anything about it.

But this I know, shouldn't there be a research paper on it or somethin? Or some sort of report of some kind?

in other words.... CITATION PLEASE!

There have been papers on this sort of thing in the past, for her to have INVENTED something, I kind of expect something tangible that actually is a proof of concept. Not just some ideas of what may happen.

I'm happy as snake shit for her if it in fact works, however reading the article she has no proof it will work since she hasn't actually created anything.

We're fine as long as we don't cross the streams.

Okay, I suspected as much. What did she prove then? I can "invent" in interstellar fusion based propulsion system, proving it works is always another huge step isn't it?

I don't suppose you have the name of the research paper?

the inventions generates energy for space vehicles from electric energy formed by Casimir-polder force, which occurs between separate surfaces and objects in a vacuum

for those of you who don't drool on quantum mechanics this is the experiment that "proved" dark matter, and the "energy" generated would not be sufficient to lift a piece of paper.

Ehh... huge is a bit of an understatement... there have been "proofs" that show that warp drive (star trek style) could work since you could move space rather than the object, or how you can artificially create worm holes or.... It's a far step from using existing theory and trying to find practical solutions for them, and actually making said work.

IIRC, the Casimir effect is a pressure that depends upon the area of your plates, and the distance between them to the 4th power.. larger distance smaller force, so you need either gynormous plates, or very tiny separations... and even then the effects are fairly tiny, and it's still a squeezing force, not any sort of propulsive one.

I don't suppose you have the name of the research paper?
Not HER research paper, but other papers on the Casimir effect you can probably easily google a few papers up that describe it. Just stay away from the physics forums as sometimes people take that shit a bit too seriously :D

So, how is this interesting? . . .

Anyone can make a patent on any old thing.

Some dude just patented a Ghost listening device . . all it does is can radio channels and they see if "voices" can be heard. (well no shit they can).

Zero point energy? Really?
Pull the other one . .
There is a reason it is defined the Lowest energy state. As in by definition you cant get any more energy out of it. which makes it impossible to use zero point energy for any actual work. And if you could then the state is not zero point . .etc . . . Q.E.D.

So the entire notion is insane, but because because quantum is in the name . . . it is pseudoscience GOLD and is the source of all sorts of crazy perpetual motion machines. . etc.
total BS

Sigh.

Precious few people have the ability to read critically and retain a skeptical outlook these days.

If it hasn't been built, and it doesn't work, then I don't care. People claim to invent shit all the time. Especially when it's someone from BFE (literally), who has nothing to lose in terms of reputation and has no credibility in the first place. At least if a professor of physics or engineering at a reputable school claims something, you know they stand to lose if they are wrong and that is already a point in the column for credibility.

I mean hell, nothing is stopping me from putting out a press release tomorrow claiming I invented a radical new way to extract sea wave energy. I actually thought some stuff up but I haven't built it or proved anything so it's worth the same as what this person has done to anyone else.

It doesn't matter. In two years she will either be:

Dead-Because Egypt's new government will brand her a genie or something and execute her for heresy or something.

Married to her first cousin as a 2nd wife with 2 kids.

Obviously, the real flaw here is that the quantum tunneling outliers will negate the transduction effect, essentially creating a Fasmir field that will reduce the Glons energy quotient to -0.00217 for every unit increase of negatronian polymanifolds.

You're so full of shit.

Everyone knows the Glons energy quotient is reduced -0.00172 for every unit increase.

1st: "space travels" and "she has patented the device with Egyptian Academy of scientific Research and Technology"? Excellent journalism.

2nd: Correct me if I am wrong, but hasn't a large amount of research gone into hydrogen propulsion in space, which is significantly cheaper than current fuels and much more practical than starting fresh in a new area of research.

3rd: While slightly off base, the fact that this is in Egypt means that it most likely will not be funded at anywhere near what it would be in the US, both monetarily and in terms of brain power.

...on Earth

In space instantaneous power isn't as critical and an engine that can create impulse with (nearly?, it mentions chemical reactions but doesn't specify much about it) no loss of reaction mass, etc would be a real boon.

aha I get you, I know what the casimir effect is, its simple enough to understand on a basic level anyway.

I was asking for her research paper, not the research papers on others because to come out and make this claim without any solid evidence for the scientific community to scrutinize is really bad form. I can't find anything honestly and I've searched through quite a few databases. I suspect trolling

There are strong reasons to doubt this claim. Many people have previously claimed to have "harnessed" the vacuum energy; but their mechanisms never stand up to testing. While it is possible to build devices which interact with the vacuum, these devices never produce energy, they merely transform it. If there were a meaningful way to access vacuum energy, we'd have done so for power production a long time ago; claims that "it only works in space" don't make sense, we can generate vacuums on earth. Essentially, this is a hoax.

Also, the picture attached to the article is of the bobbin chase on a sewing machine.

"easier, cheaper and faster in future" .... I got three words that can do the same thing today ! "Make it smaller". Ha Ha, seriously, I have no idea what i'm talking about.
