Should I buy Diablo 3?

Am I the only one that has practically zero interest in this game? The only interest I really have is trying to understand what others are find so compelling. With other dreckware like Madden and CoD, I don't like it, but I at least get why others do.

Every gameplay video I watch is just spamming the same attacks at generic fantasy creatures and picking up the crap they drop. That literally seems to be it. I've never been into grinding games and, while I beat Diablo 2, I found it to be relatively boring and was sick of it by Act 3. There seems to be little in the way of story either. I have maybe 20 hours into Torchlight, mostly while traveling for work, and for $5 it was worth it as a distraction. Diablo 3 will be $50+ for years and I can't even play it on the road/train/plane.

After a brief stint with WoW (quit during the first expansion) and giving Starcraft 2 a shot (thoroughly average and, IMO, may set the RTS genre back years), I have lost all faith that Blizzard will make a game that *I* want to play. They release well-polished games that are meant to be accessible and enjoyed by the maximum number of people possible, but I find the whole "play it safe, print cash" attitude to be so disappointing. It's the same formulaic junk that wasn't particularly innovative a decade ago and I can't believe anyone thinks it stands up today as a "new release". Warcraft 3 and WoW did some things differently and I found them deep and enjoyable. WoW went backwards over time, but WC3 still stands up well today IMO.

Re-reading my post I see how negative it is and I really don't mean to be attacking anyone. I know this has been anticipated by many for years and I hope you all enjoy it. I guess I'm just frustrated that everyone around me is foaming at the mouth to play this and I'm going to be stuck playing games I like alone until they burn themselves out in a couple of months.

Are PC gamers really turning into such loud mouthed malcontents? Blizzard produces pretty much perfect games. How the fuck anyone can complain about them is beyond me. No wonder PC developers are jumping ship and making games for consoles. We've turned into whiney bitches who complain about everything.

You mean produced. I used to love Blizzard games, but with Starcaft II, the MoP expansion for WoW, and Dialbo III, they are 0/3. Just because you're drinking the 'Blizzard is perfect' cool-aid doesn't mean everyone is.

And the reason PC developers are jumping to consoles is because it's an entire new market to exploit. They don't care if they loose $10M on the PC side by making sub-par games dumbed-down enough to work on a console, since they gain $30M from the console sales. It's simple economics. Sadly, game companies are not in the business to make good games, they are in the business to make money.

This is what is causing PC games to be malcontent. Lately, it seems that PC games are nothing but a console port, and by that, are less than what they should be. Consoles are limited by their nature; From their fixed graphics capabilities to their limited-button controllers. This means that games need to be of reduced complexity, both graphically, and in the user interface, to work on a console. Since developers don't want to have to write the same game twice, they write the game for the lowest common denominator (the console), and then those with more capable PCs are told to just 'deal with it'. PC gamers are understandably upset when games that should be a step forward in gameplay and technology are instead pushed two steps back due to consoles.

This problem is especially heinous when it occurs with our most beloved franchises. I think that all of the passion coming from the community against Diablo III speaks volumes of two things:
1.) Blizzard did something very right with Diablo I/II in order to develop such a passionate fanbase
2.) Blizzard did something very wrong with Diablo III to fragment the fanbase so terribly. Blizzard failed with Diablo III. Not from an economic standpoint, as I am certain that it will do very well (only due to it's name), but on an integrity standpoint.

I only see one whiney bitch.

This is true, since the Activision merger Blizzard has lost a lot of its former self. Battle.net 2.0, current state of WoW, and SC2s mediocrity are all indicative of this.

Secondly yeah, they are pandering to the consoles. And the consoles are limited to the lowest common denominator in more ways than hardware restrictions. Gaming over the last decade has become a much bigger industry and as such is more or less considered mainstream now.

I seen the dozen or so people at Walmart tonight while I was busting my ass with two trucks to unload. I don't think the game is Epic by any means from all the videos I seen. It's on par with Diablo II.

This makes it epic.

It seems like it is going to be really popular. I am very young for diablo series. I mean I was illiterate when diablo 2 released :D

I am very new to RPG. to be honest I have never played RPG before.
I don't if I will have wasted my money when I have bought this game.

What do you think? Is it worth to give it a shot?
well if u have internet problems dont buy it :)) funny how other games get bashed for requiring an internet conection to play single player, but blizzard can just get away with it....

Berp not allowed to criticise a developer whose games I happen to like.

Blizzard produces pretty much perfect games? That's totally subjective. As in entirely subjective. WoW, for example, was one of the most horrendously boring games I've ever played. SCII was/is bollocks compared to CoH. Etc.

Apparently on your sliding scale we have only two stop-off points: blind, fanatical fanboysor loud-mouthed malcontents. Nothing else exists.

For those who are saying D3 is stale, are you sure it's not just you getting older?

I feel the same way about most games these days because the fact is I am older. It's like when I remember loading up Morrowind for the first time as a sophomore in high school. It was absolutely amazing to have an open world. Then Oblivion came when I was a freshman in college. It was cool, but the magic wasn't quite there. Luckily, mods helped make it a great experience. And just last year I played Skyrim. Again, it was cool for a little bit, but the magic is completely gone. I think it will be the same for D3, sadly.

I've also been looking for a reason to buy this but can't bring myself to do it...I've never played any of the previous Diablo games as the hack-and-slash mechanics don't do it for me...it looks pretty and it obviously has a huge following so it is pretty much critic-proof but it doesn't seem to have mainstream interest beyond the Diablo/Blizzard fanboys

no no , i played tons of d2 growing up, and this game is just such a waste of time, i play RPG to try grind away with crazy experimental builds, not a streamlined piece of garbage where everyones first char beats inferno

and i never intend to play d3 i will watch the end vids on youtube to see how the lore works about but the gameplay is not worth my time

Lag in a single player game is a good place to start

this single player is horrible if you have a high ping location aka satellite connection.

its unacceptable that every click i make in a solo game has to be registered by blizzard servers..

yeah and the game is a deceptive pile of poo, it says its an RPG but its double dragon with an inventory

Me 3 got bashed for the last 10 minutes,i wonder how bashed D3 will be for a laggy SP... My guess none :)

So don't buy it... ?

If you have a high ping location you have a lot more issues than Diablo 3. Seriously I am not trying to give Diablo 3 a pass here, but games like Battlefield etc stream way more content than Diablo 3 and I really do not know a single person that isn't always connected to the internet and has a fast enough connection to run the game. I have ran the game on 1.5 and 3 mbps connections.

It isn't you getting older, many games are just becoming bland. I can go back and play games that are considered hall of fame games from 10-15 years ago and still feel the magic. I can also play several new games and get the same feeling. You may just have to look harder now that (a)RPG is considered mainstream.

D3 is fun, but it isn't what I would consider a masterpiece. I'll hold off on final thoughts until I finish it and try some multiplayer, but to me it's like a 8/10, being generous. Good, but not fantastic.

Good post and I can understand where you're coming from. Although I am curious as to which games you find worthy?

I think that is the complete opposite. I play games from the SNES days and even the N64 days and I am constantly wondering "how was this ever fun?".

I wasn't referring to console games, but I can get that. I do think you may have a bit of a short attention span, though there are many old console games I will never play again. I was more talking about PC RPGs. I can easily hop back into Morrowind, Fallout, Planescape, Wiz 6-8, etc. I even played through Diablo 1-2 in the last couple years and had a good time.

There are quite a few newer games that are giving me quite a bit of entertainment lately, too.

Agreed. I find it ridiculous too. Although I really believe that you probably need to seperate people on these forums with the majority of people that play these games. I understand that there is overlap, meaning people on these forums obviously play these games too. But lets look at the numbers real quick.

According to wikipedia
As of December 2010, the game has sold nearly 4.5 million units.[79] The game was also heavily pirated, reportedly being downloaded over 2.3 million times

And [H]ardForum has just over 163K members. Lets just round and say 7 million people play/played SC2, (most likely not every member) [H] members would account for approx 2.3% of the games customer population. Thats a pretty small sample in my opinion. And he said "set the RTS genre back years" LOL

It's just so easy to tear something down and criticize it rather than the opposite.

AMEN BROTHER. Not to mention most sales records dont include digital sales only retail... Honestly there are a lot more people out there loving the game then hating it..unfortunately the haters have bigger mouths and enjoy trolling just as much as hating. I understand the hate for some games personally I was mad when I bought black ops because I didnt think it was worthy of 60 dollars. However diablo 3 is damn near perfect and a lot of fun. Too many whiners looking for something to hate on and coming up short

I played diablo 2 recently and had a little bit of fun, but when I realized none of my friends were going to play it again I just lost interest.

Otherwise any older RPG I have really never played on the PC. Even games like Deus EX I can not jump back into and feel the magic.

Then don't play on Blizzard's servers. There, problem fixed.

There are plenty of valid opinions on both sides. The issue I have is that many people can't articulate their opnions one way or another. Words like "epic", "visceral", "awesome", "shitty", "gay", "stupid" shouldn't be in use unless you can explain why you feel that way.

generally gamer opinions have almost no merit. thats what an over saturated market comes with though, that and the ability to have hardware at its lowest prices ever and its highest efficiency in terms of ability to last, which means more people playing PC unfortunately dumb people out number the intelligent ones.

I will say that I don't appreciate the single player being quite so reliant on blizzard servers. I have an excellent connection to the internet and it still feels awkward and laggy for no reason.

I can actually relate to this.. used to live in a small town in North Carolina and I had such shitty internet it was horrible. I have a pretty insane connection here in vegas and I had a couple stutters but that was it!

The dumb ones are the ones that keep the industry moving. If just the "intelligent" gamers were left, people would only buy one or two new games a year, then the rest of the games would be bought for <$5 on Steam.

Anyone know if this game is stand alone in terms of someone who's never played 1 or 2 regardless if they were literate in 1997 can fully understand the game, story line, and other features of this game. It looks incredible and I think it would be a nice change of pace from MW3 for me. Sorry if this was discussed but I read pages 1-3,14 and didn't see anything.

You don't need any prior experience, the games never had much for plot anyway. Just know that some terrible stuff has happened, and now you need to go kill about 3.7 million enemies to fix the situation.

actually they have really stepped it up story wise dude and they've actually tied the old games into 3 really well. You can actually catch up on the lore if that kind of thing tickles your fancy theres even a little mini book on their website. Personally i love the story and how its evolving they really stepped it up with the plot in this addition.
