Samsung S27B970D experience?

I'll be building a new game rig in the next couple of months and was planning on getting a 27" Apple Cinema display to go with it when I noticed that Samsung is supposed to be releasing the S27A970 monitor this month.

Just wondering if anyone has actually seen this thing in action yet and would care to comment. Actually any suggestions for a 27" 2560x1440 monitor would be welcome.

I favor the glossy look. After 18 years developing software for the MS stack, I jumped to iOS development, got a 27" SB iMac and love the screen. I put a couple games on bootcamp and loved the visuals, Dead Space(2) and Batman AC were particularly awesome.

As a point of reference I use a Dell U2411 with my current gaming rig. I personally find the AG coating just saps the 'pop' from the visuals compared to the Cinema display.

I'd be really interested in this as well. I'm using a Dell 30" at the moment, which is fantastic for having two separate windows up and working on both at the same time, but the input lag and the response time both leave a lot to be desired, as does the AG coating. So I'm looking at the Samsung as well at the moment.

Any ideas when it'll actually be possible to buy it?
 
No vesa mount or adjustable stand and a MSRP over $1,000 doesn't make this all that appealing IMO.
 
I have been planning on the Apple display also, but Amazon stopped carrying it, unless I want to use some of the questionable 3rd party marketplace companies.

So I have the same question as the OP basically. I really do want the non-Thunderbolt Apple display though. Had my heart set on it.

I have a ton of Amazon GC credit, so no matter what my monitor will be ordered from Amazon.
 
Apparently there is an S27A850T model, but I haven't found any reference to it in the USA.
 
Negative.

Expect an August-Fall release like last years 850D.
 
It seems pre-production units have started to go out for reviews now, i only found one review on cnet that was so inconclusive that i won't even link it, but please post if you see any better ones!
 
The cnet 'review' wasn't exactly informative, but it was better than nothing. At least it shows the thing exists out there...

What I find annoying about cnet sort of reviews (even proper ones) is they spend more time talking about the bezel, or connections, than how the panel looks.

I am still hoping they eventually come out with a 24" version, although at the glacial speed Samsung seems to move at, that could be a while, if they make one at all.

The truth is that outside of the bubble of these types of forums people couldn't give a shit about uniformity , color space , response time , static contrast ratio and other features that enthusiasts care about it.

Most people who buy monitors plug them in and leave them in super torch mode. They won't ever touch the controls and they just want it to work.

CNET caters directly to this group. Its a review/news site that focuses on the normal everyday user and it shows in their videos. Don't ever expect anything else from them.

It apparently has gone up on Samsung's swedish site too. So maybe a Summer release in the US is a possibility.
 
Hot Damn.

I got a S27A950 for Xmas this year. My family also ordered 3 more because they looked awesome.

Now this thing comes along and is height adjustable and tiltable (which mine is not). Maybe it's not worth the increase in price, though. I happen to have a desk setup where the monitor doesn't need tilt/height adjustment luckily.

The specs are incredible, 1.07 billion colors, every unit individually pre-calibrated from factory, built in calibration engine / hardware LUT?, PLS panel without heavy anti-glare. I hope the SB970 turns up before the summer :D.

I just saw that the presense on the Swedish site was already mentioned in the pcmonitor article.

Whoops $1199, at that price i don't think it would sit on every consumers desk :D, <$1000 would put it on a lot more desks.

Weird, great specs but still no VESA mount. Just seems odd to me that they'd do that.

Keep in mind that's retail price. I expect it'll be <$1000 from some resellers after a while (or I'd hope so).

A 24" model at say, $600-$700 retail ($500 street), would sell possibly better, so long as they used the same innards + screen quality as the bigger brother. Even if super nice, I can't afford a $1000 monitor. But a smaller one at around $500ish... possible.
 
$1000 and up is to much for me too, i would rather spend that money on a 52" TV than a 27" monitor. Lets hope Samsung has plans to release a 24" SB970 like S24B970 for $500-$700.
 
The 1080p 120hz Samsungs were like what 600? Would not surprise me in the least if these were north of 1k when they ship. That being said, I REALLY want a glossy or semi-glossy 1440p monitor, so I will unfortunately pay it beacuse this thing looks incredible. I hope they put a release date on it soon...time to start saving.

possibly because all the inputs are integrated into the hub on the base of the stand? it is disappointing, but I suspect that this display will have too much input lag/latency for many of us (because of the 16 bit LUT & hardware calibration)

Thanks for the link. It looks pretty spiffy. It's a shame there's no vesa mount, but it's not a deal killer for me personally.

I wonder how well the self-calibration works. I know Eizo has a model that self-calibrates. Does anyone have any experience with a self-calibrating monitor? How accurate is it?
 
what makes you people think this is a gaming monitor? rofl

its by far the last monitor i would buy for gaming.

read op's post first people, he's looking to build a gaming rig and a needs a gaming monitor, and not for photos, etc.

It probably has to do with the fact that the op asked specifically about this monitor.

He was the one who originally asked about it.
 
It should be amazing for non-hard core gamers. I hope it turns out to be great. If it is good it will put an end to LG's tyrranical reign over the professional display market.

People will finally have the option to get a display with hardware calibration that does not feature LG's excessively grainy matte coatings and IPS tinting.

There are few things which will make people switch from EIZO/NEC to Samsung.

1. Hardware Calibration with extra Gamma/Color Gamut standard support from L curve to DICOM standard as well as SMPTE-C to sRGB

2. Printer Profiles' Simulations for major brands.
 
I figured this thing wouldn't be out for months so I bought a Crossover 2720MDP instead :(

Apart from the input lag, which is identical to the delay on the S27A850D (around 18-24ms, measured with the SMT Tool 2.0 which is normal for an IPS/PLS panel with scaling) it is excellent for an IPS/PLS panel in terms of ghosting. It is faster than a few 60hz TN panel's I've used an a noticeable improvement over the S27A850D, just like the 27Q LED-P was.

I expect the S27B970D to also ghost less than the S27A850D. I am concerned about the S27B970D's black levels: in the video Gatehouse posted I saw that the black level was 0.20cdm/2 @100 nits @ the 2:24 mark which is horrible...

The main selling point is hardware calibration. Have you installed the software " Nature Color Expert" for next hand-on review?
