The Pirate Bay is warning people not to be fooled by fake TPB sites. I can't believe someone would stoop low enough to rip off or copy The Pirate Bay's hard work and try to profit from it!

Although perhaps not technically a straightforward proxy, one site – ThePirateBay.ee (note the .ee extension) – became particularly popular. The site first appeared during the last quarter of 2011 and was an almost perfect clone of TPB with identical functionality. Intermittently, however, it pulled a sly little trick.

That's funny right there. Always goes along what I said, if you're stupid enough to get viruses and malware installed on your computer from something you download, because you don't run a virus shield or something... then you're really too stupid to be downloading anything.

I ran without virus protection for a good 3+ years and never once got a virus (I would occasionally install and scan just to make sure). It's not so much about having protection as just using common sense. Dont go randomly clicking every exe when you download something. I promise you Crysis3 is not out yet, nor is the total file size 568KB.

Yeah about that *cough* common *cough* sense. I don't suppose your common sense told you that this [H] forum was infected about a year ago, causing unprotected [H] readers from getting infected? Downloading pirated materials isn't the only way to catch a virus, you know.

On topic: That's rich. It's ok for TPB to advocate piracy, but oh no, you can't copy them! It's so wrong! Blackest kettle I've ever met.

Yeah...but this is a thread about TPB and downloading from TPB.

I think this is more of a warning to users of bittorrent, since its the big mainstream thing and we all know Joe Sixpack and Susie Consumer is using it now, that these people are easily misinformed and will only cause bot nets and virus spreading from downloading from illegitimate(?) sites. I don't think TPB cares whether you use them or not, they don't want their name smeared(?) any more than it is by using incorrect sites

The point is, despite the safest browsing practices something can still slip on to your PC despite that. A compromised ad or 0-day vulnerabilty can pop up any time.

A good rule of thumb is anything LESS than 50kb and is an exe will give your computer virtual herpes. Use caution and common sense.

Or just buy it.

True, it just seemed off-topic since everyone else was talking about viruses from downloading, not exploits and vulnerabilities.

The article was about sites that charge for downloads. It's not like TPB was complaining about other torrent sites.

What he said. You dont have to dl a thing in order to catch a virus. Just go to an infected site and its a wrap. And you can go to a perfectly legit site that you've visited a thousand times. Its that thousand and one time that'll get ya.

What are you talking about? Torrents have never cost money on TPB...

The real deal as in the software you're pirating - purchasing them from legit sources, like Walmart or GameStop or Babbage or Amazon, where ever.

That is going completely off on a tangent, then.

If it helps, pretend TPB is any other free download site, regardless of content.
