GeForce GTX 690 - Perfection Inside and Out @ [H]

I don't know why the $1000 price tag is scary to so many of you people. I have an $1800 guitar, a $1500 couch, etc and honestly my computer gets way more use than either of those. You can argue that the longevity of the guitar is far greater and it will hold value more, but that's why I unload my video cards before the value drops too much and then upgrade :p
Same here. I have three $800 screens, two $1000 speakers, and two $1800 subs. Oh and I also have $1000 headphones. Once you get into higher-range gear, these pricetags become all too common. Your comment regarding longevity is right, but it's still only $1000 for a halo product.

i know this is off topic but 1000 dollar headphones!?

i can't wait till thursday to see the review - lol - i'm jumping straight to the overclocking page.

haha yeah people really have no clue how cheap the PC hobby is.

My pedal bike is now over $6000. Oh and don't get into the race car hobby, trust me...

The exhaust on my car was $1400. The turbo I want is $4000... sigh.

Computers are one of the cheaper hobbies.

Hi Kyle, would changing your test setup from a 640GB Black Caviar to a high end SSD change performance? I just sold my desktop SSD and reverted to an older hard drive, which happens to be the same drive used in the 680 review. I've been using SSDs in various systems for 18 months now and going back to a hard disk was quite jarring.

It wouldn't affect FPS, so no. Only load times.

There are plenty of awesome headphones in this price range and they are well worth it.

Sennheiser HD800
Grado GS-1000i
Denon AH-D7000
JH 13 Pro
... many more

Also, you need a good DAC/Amp to drive these headphones, usually a few hundred to around $1000 for some people for that too.

Of course a good set of headphones and amp will last you 10+ years.

I'd like to buy one of these tomorrow or Friday but I'm thinking the availability is going to be quite low and that they will pretty much sell out immediately.

$999, most expensive GPU Nvidia (or AMD/ATI) has ever put out? So GTX 590 was $749 and this is $999? in a down economy, thinking I should sell all my nvidia stock.

Maybe its just me but normally the more you spend the more you should get back.
For instance, if you want 50% better performance it should cost 25% more... Buy more and save concept ;) But NVidia is giving you a little under 2X performance for 2X the price... Seems like overkill to me unless you are running 3 monitors. Something in between would be nice.

In what world do you live in where the more you spend on a video card the better performance/dollar you get? Beyond the $150 price point that is.

Also, there was a $1000 GeForce 5800 Ultra (or was it 6800?) back in the day with 1GB of video ram. Certainly not the price set by nVidia, but $1000 for basically 2 of the flagship card has been hit many times before.

As I recall the 7800GTX was $600 for a single core when it launched.

For me the only thing special about the 690 is the attention to detail on the pcb "shaved components for better airflow" and the metal cooler. If it doesn't overclock much better than two stock 680s would then I won't even consider it

Nvidia has mentioned that limited availability from partners on May 3rd...however they said additional quantity will be available on May 7th. To me it sounds very low quantity on May 3rd as one partner that will be selling mentioned they will have very low quantity on May 3rd.

So at what time on the 3rd does the NDA lift? Midnight?

Ditto...would be nice to be able to read some reviews before all the partners start selling the 690's Thursday morning. I am more interested in how it handles heat, overclock ability etc...if it OC's well and handles heat well then I will go for it. But would like to read the review first..would suck to read the review then decide it is ago but be too late to order...hell I can order and cancel if needed too though if reviews point to it being a dud.

Sorry, in life, the more you put in (etc. money), the less you get back. It's the law of diminishing returns.

Typically NDAs lift at around midnight EDT on whatever date, at least for us in North America. So we should see something, somewhere, in about nine and a half hours.
Nvidia usually releases later in the morning not at midnight. pretty much every Nvidia review has gone up at 9 AM eastern or maybe central time.

I've yet to score with the ladies sporting a souped-up PC... Cars on the other hand...

quick question, for someone who plays games in windowed mode, can this latest dual GPU card function at full capability in such a scenario? i realize in the past that any sort of dual GPU card setup (crossfire, sli) cannot use both GPU's in a windowed game, just wondering if that has changed with the GTX 690.

You are either single or loves to spend your parents' money.

I'm going to vote married with a wife who plays Wow :p.

My wife is also a gamer, but do you know how much dishes I have to wash and yard work I have to do to get some upgrades up in here?!?!

Sometimes I question evolutions decision of combining pleasure with reproduction.

Sort of a bad comparison... The $1,8k guitar is probably a high quality, a well made piece of musical instrument that makes you appreciate the product.

There is nothing interesting about the $1k video card because its been made to rip off the consumer for max profits and it will be worth $50 after 5 years and people won't even take that for free. The guitar will serve you well and probably still be worth around 80% what you paid.

I'm sorry to hear that. I'm married, just not as whipped as you.

The difference, in my mind, is that monitors and especially speakers don't generally reach obsolescence as fast as GPUs. Sure, with console ports and whatnot these days, GPUs can last quite a bit longer than in the past, but speakers can last a decade or more, and monitors several years, if not longer depending on if you are happy with the resolution/panel type/etc.

Um, no, I don't. If I want it I just buy it. I don't have to answer to her for everything. Whipped, indeed.

What time do you guys think these will go on sale? Midnight or some time during the morning tomorrow?

Yeah I want extra vram that I will never use and by the time I will be able to use it my gpu will be too slow so I think I'll pass too.

Try playing BF3 at 5760x1080 or higher (the people who should actually spend this kind of money on these cards) with everything maxed and see how much VRAM is used. Yeah.

pcper.com has a live review tomorrow at 1pm est., i would bet they will be on sale by then.

Wasn't sure if you were talking about the NDA "release" or the actual product release - maybe they are the same event...?
I am guessing they should be at the same time but some places might jump the gun and have them up for sale before reviews. I know the gtx680 was up on newegg before reviews came out.

Really? That's very interesting... Would you mind posting Nvidia's cost on the chip, the AIB cost on their cards, the cost of R&D Nvidia put into the product, marketing costs, and any other misc expenses from designing and shipping the 680?

I mean since you know Nvidia is ripping us off, you must have somehow gotten leaked financial data to backup your claim... oh wait...
