Just so we are clear on this, the only reason I am posting this article is because I agree with this assessment and it reinforces my opinions / beliefs on the subject. :D

CEO says slower subscriber growth in second quarter is seasonal but Wall Street isn't sure. Investors fear decline in growth tied to lack of streaming content and increased competition. The first thing to know about Netflix is that CEO Reed Hastings says the business is in good shape. The next thing to know is that hardly anyone on Wall Street believes him.

Canceled when they increased the price for the DVD & streaming plan.
Not enough/current selection to justify the streaming cost, and got tired of waiting months for new DVD's to be available.

I just don't know how they can get better and not put themselves out of business though. The studios want piles of money from Netflix for every movie they put on streaming, but Netflix likely can't afford it because if they charge even $1 more a month the internet explodes with people crying like someone stole their blanky. They botched some PR moves, no doubt. Quickster is a dumb name too. But they aren't some evil company deserving of the hate they seem to get. The studios have a gun to their head.

we canceled a few weeks ago. We stopped watching the dvds, last one we had, we had for 2 months, unwatched. Stream selection is a pile of garbage unless you want to watch old tv shows.

I honestly would page 15 bucks a month or whatever just for streaming IF, they had a really good content selection.

Agreed.....

I pay $7.99 a month for Netflix and its probably the best bargain out there as far as entertainment value.......if you want new releases and better content be prepared to pay about $100.00 a month....

I agree. Other than a few old TV series we've been catching up on, there's no new movies that I want to watch. Looked for Ghostbusters the other day. Not there, but Ghostbusters 2 is. same with another movie (forgot the name). If it didn't give us a 3rd option for kids (Live tv, Tivo'ed programs, Netflix), I'd drop it all together.

Yeah, we dumped netflix when they upped the prices, but more because the streaming selection actually got worse as time went on, not better. I had about 14 movies at one point that I had saved to watch later that had been "archived" because they were no longer available for streaming, and then they removed the archive.

We've had streaming and 1 BR options for years and i just put in to cancel streaming because we simply don't use it anymore and I'm wasting $10 a month now. The selection is total garbage, who cares about lame documentarys, cheesy b-movies, and tv-shows.. well someone might but not me.. the blu rays are still good with me though since we enjoy movies and i dont see any better/easier way to rent them so we will keep that for now.

Ghostbusters is def there, watched it two weeks ago! I use netflix streaming daily and always find stuff to watch, if I want new content I can go on Hulu or get cable again....

I'd happily pay $15 a month for a service that had something worth watching. To be clear, I'm talking about streaming only -- as I found the DVDs just collected dust.

Once you get through their catalog, there isn't anything left except complete crap. Lots of good stuff, but like I said -- no new stuff flowing in that. At least, not enough to keep me interested.

People amaze me. Sign up for Netflix streaming and Hulu plus, you've got everything worth watching on cable and a whole lot more, for $15 a month. Oh, but $8 is too much, they raised their price a $1! I know, I'll spend $100 a month on cable, that'll show em! The reasoning here, or lack of it I should say, is just staggering.

The networks are trying to kill Netflix by jacking up their licensing fees to save their antiquated service model and keep us all paying exorbitant prices for their shit programming and 10 minute commercial breaks every 4 minutes, and peo

don't use reason and logic. This is the intenets... emotional kneejerk reactions only.

I did the same. Then signed back up. Now that I haven't hardly used it in over a month, I'm on the verge of dropping it again. I've already watched all the episodes of all the Star Trek series again. There just isn't anything else worth watching right now.

I think it would be cheaper to just buy the Blurays of the good movies Hollywood puts out these days. There are few enough of them.

Canceled the streaming shortly after they jacked up the price. I miss it now and then. I still have the DVD service and really enjoy that. Sometimes I'll keep a movie for a couple of weeks, but it's no biggie.

You should watch Lilyhammer. Its a netflix original series. Its very good and I'm looking forward to a second season of it. There is plenty to watch on netflix, you just have to look for it. I do agree that I wish it had more streaming content and I would gladly pay more for it. But the problem is, if they doubled their content they would have to raise prices, and with the way the internet works is every one would freak out about it even if the added content was new and worth it.

It all comes down to selection. Their service is well priced for what it has, but that's not much. I'd gladly pay 2x the price if they were able to massively increase their selection and get more/new movies and recently aired shows sooner. As it stands it simply isn't worth paying for after 6 months when you've run through all of the stuff that's of interest to you. The studios seem be squeezing the life out of them when they should be doing everything they can to help push things along into the 21 century. For all intents and purposes cable TV and satellite are facing a slow and inevitable death. There's no reason not to move forward rather than try and hold things back. In the long run the studios are just hurting themselves.

You are speaking to this guy.

...The selection is total garbage, who cares about lame documentarys, cheesy b-movies, and tv-shows.. well someone might but not me...

I mean, why would you pay $15 to watch something educational? For $100 you can watch stuff that goes on an infinite loop AND get the old stuff you would never watch in the first place. Sounds like a deal to me!

I watch the "lame" documentaries all the time. They are good for children as well but I guess that might not play into most people's purpose for tv which is usually just to sit the kids in front of all of the time as a babysitter.

My wife and I are big fans of Mystery Science Theater 3000, and some of the good ones are available on Netflix, so we'll probably never get rid of it. We also use it for Rifftrax, which has a number of the movies they make commentaries for available on Netflix.

Other than that, there's a couple of reality shows/documentary series my wife and I watch, and that's about it. Still, you always feel like it could be something more. Although we always use it to watch Die Hard 1 and 2 every Christmas.

Netflix is getting TiVo'd. Why would content producers allow Netflix to rake in all the money for themselves?

Unless they can turn things around with original content like Arrested Development, they're going to be starved out.

Love the streaming, hate the streaming, the fact is that by trying to switch their business model to streaming they could do nothing but get worse for a period. It'll take time to bring it up to the level of customer satisfaction their DVD by mail service had. There's no way to spin it. you are either paying the same for a worse service, or you are paying twice as much for a sub-par add on. Treading water for a bit is the BEST case scenario. The real problem is that the content creators are fighting their business model tooth and nail.

I don't know if they are missing the sweet spot, or if their plan to get there is just complicated. I think the streaming services have to stop aiming at the $10 a month price point. They have to look at everything above basic cable. That extra $30-70 people pay each month. If you can put out something that competes with the non-crap portion of that channel guide for less, you can start bringing in customers at a more functional price point.

I doubt anyone is dropping Netflix in favor of big cable.

I've wondered for a while how much Netflix would have to cost for their streaming to include every major movie that was more than 12 or 18 months old. I know it is a pipedream and the studios would probably try to charge infinity dollars or something, but that would be a compelling service for sure. I think at $30 to $40 a month they would have no difficulty finding subscribers within normal people.

I know, I know, cue the audio/videophiles that zomg can't possibly watch that horribly compressed garbage. They can still have their Blu Rays, but I sure would never need to buy one again.

Pretty much.

The argument isn't correct. It should be "Wait, they are raising my price again? And blaming it on the studios? Then I'll cancel my subscription and no one will get my money." That would be the logical answer, but doesn't sound nearly is idiotic and sensational as the previous argument.

The studios will never again get large amounts of money from me. Their products are overpriced and are failing the supply/demand model. I am more than content to not have any hollywood crap come into my house, and at this point only keep Netflix for their anime selection. It's only a matter of time before I exhaust that and will have no need for any sort their "entertainment."

They wonder why people pirate... $25/month or less for unlimited usenet access to watch anything you can imagine in as high quality as you want or $15/month for Hulu/Netflix combo only to be jerked around with revoked licenses for favorite programs and piss poor "HD" flash video streams while suffering from a barrage of advertisements. It's a better option than cable but the rights/licensing issues are strangling these services.

I have netflix and I can say I would keep it even with a large price hike if content went with it. Give me some good stuff to watch and good selection and I will pay 60-80 a month depending on the content. Around here 100+ bucks is the going rate for cable (with any of the "good" channels). I mean really, no commercials, no having to record something, no having to do anything but search, click, watch, that's worth more than cable to me.

Honestly the main thing keeping me on nextflix streaming is old movies (black and white) and all the shows they boost from the BBC.

Major pet peeve: The jackass who works at netflix and insists titles such as Miracle on 34th street and the frog prince are Sci-Fi

I still have both Cable and Netflix, with Hulu on almost permanent hold.

Only reason I still have Cable, is because my brothers wants it. I don't think I've really watched TV in the last year, but my brothers do.

Yeah this is the problem. Netflix can't control the licensing costs. They raise prices to cover licensing costs and people bitch. They refuse to pay extra, eg Starz, so people don't have to pay more, so they lose content, and people bitch. Not sure how Netflix can win.

Let's see CEO raises prices for DVD and streaming and says "nothing to see here, keep moving along"

Suscribers leave in droves

CEO says "nothing to see here, keep moving along"

Remaing subscribers complain and leave.

CEO unapologetically makes up silly name to separate services.... continues to say "nothing to see here, keep moving along people"

Everyone complains and financials start showing how BAD the CEO is screwing up.

CEO changes mind says everything will still be called Netflix, still not sorry.... still saying "nothing to see here, keep moving along people"

Financials still looking bad, people say they're not happy with streaming selection, higher prices, etc.

CEO says "nothing to see here, keep moving along"

Great way to drive a once good company in to the ground, by being a pig headed and not listening to your customers.

CEO and/or Netflix as company are going to go down the shitter.

Small intelligent population pirates. I don't think the normal run of the mill joe/jane could understand how to use it.

Netflix is simple enough that there are several compatible smart devices out there to watch on.

Gotta love how the general population is screaming the answer to everyones problem but none of the companies will listen..

People will pay more for a larger libray of newer content...

How hard is that to understand.. I was one of those who dropped off Netflix after 4 years when they double gouged.. Ive been looking for a reason to go back as I absolutely love their distribution system as does pretty much every other person on the planet.. But without new content its pretty much new age technology serving antiques.. I would happily pay 20$/mo to get higher tier content from Netflix, but until that happens.. I will continue to be a statistic of them losing money..

While they've boosted the TV show selections (which is nice), they've totally killed off the movie selections. It's worse than going to a Blockbuster on Sunday morning.

I just went back to netflix after letting it lapse, im throughly enjoying the older cartoons like heatcliff. Heh streaming only though, any eves that I want I grab from redbox.

Add in the few regular network/cable channel shows the family watches (even with a 2 week delay) and let me stream to 2 TV's at a time, and I'd gladly drop my cable and pay them $30/month.
I hate paying $70 a month for 70+ channels, when we only watch 10-15 of them, and half of those are local channels.

What they need is a base price, like the current $10, and then the ability to add other channels, like ABC, NICK, SIFI, for a few $ each. Of course the cable and media companies would never allow this (or want too much money), but this is the direction we really need to go in the long run.

As for the current Netflix selection, it's not even worth $10/month to me.

we canceled a few weeks ago. We stopped watching the dvds, last one we had, we had for 2 months, unwatched. Stream selection is a pile of garbage unless you want to watch old tv shows.

Exactly! We're teeter on cancelling here soon. We were signed up for streaming and Blu-Rays. But once they jacked up the price, we opted for just 1 disk at a time and got rid of the streaming due to lack of audio options. Now we are finding that the new library is really stale and can’t go back to the streaming option since there is no such thing as real 5.1 or 7.1 surround with Netflix on the PC. (And nothing in the streaming library anyhow!) I know there was a DRM bug in Silverlight but I thought that was fixed more than a year ago…. Still no love for the PC Netflix! See ya'!

Did the streaming service for about 3 months maybe a year ago or so, and then un-sub'd. The movie selection just wasn't compelling enough and from what I understand, it has gotten worse since then.

Honestly, I would be willing to pay around $30 / month for a movie catalog that includes all DVD releases from the major studios. I know there is little chance of that happening, but one can dream.

Why Kenworth my good man, I second your eloquently put virtual facepalm!

The funny thing is, Netflix needs cash to leverage new content from competitors for streaming. So of course, the natural thing to do is cut that flow off and hope for the best, and settle for the same old thing.

Brilliant! That'll learn 'em....
