SkyeHack your set up looks really clean. I like the Tv on the wall, it looks like a very thin TV.

Nice cave Rusty. Will post pics of mine this weekend after I finish cleaning.

Opening this thread was the worst decision I've ever made in my life. This has just opened my eyes to things I couldn't, or shouldn't, ever have conceived in terms of spending money on swag.

I am not worthy!

HAHAHA, don't we all know that feeling. I've been kicked out of domain 3 times! Once when my daughter was done, then again when my son was born. So I spent 5K finishing the basement and just went I thought I was safe..... my children and wife decided to share my room =(.

So now I'm finishing the other section of the basement for myself. Knowing my luck we'll get a dog and he'll want that room.

But you know what, it's totally worth it especially for the kids!

He looks like he's about to bust out a Dr. Evil pinky if you don't move out soon.

Congrats on fatherhood. Best thing ever.

My mancave history...

2003 - I get engaged... ignorance is in full effect

2005 - We get married "Im sure i will get to keep my special room"

2006 - My mancave turned in to a 'Scrapbooking room"

2007 - We move, more space, YAY, another mancave!!

2009 - My child is born, and the mancave dies... oh well, nursery was fun to build

2011 - We move to another larger house, WOHOO, new MANCAVE! This time a garage conversion, LOTS OF SPACE!! YES SCORE!

2011 - Parents run in to extreme financial hardship.. .garage mancave turned in to apartment for my parents... bye bye mancave.

2012 - Well, a spare bedroom turned in to an office is better than nothing

2012 (April) - Mom "Son, can we turn this room in to a sewing room? Me - "F you mom!"

HAHA, if that comment was directed at me, the only gripe I have about my current mancave is that I have no Cable/Satellite connection in there. My house is a 6 bedroom, and the other rooms are eating up all of the bandwidth that the Satellite can supply without adding a second dish... ugh.

Oh well, when Im in the office/cave, Im usually quite content on just using my PC anyway.

Its a fraction of the size my REAL mancave was, but its still mine! But, if you look really carefully in the reflection of the posters, you can make out the top of my daughters head, and her games on my screen... I remedied that by building her, her own machine which is in her "Kid cave" yes, I made my kid a "Kid Cave" pics of that later!

Oh hell no. Sounds like dad needs some QOS and bandwidth management.

Ok, you got me, whats QOS? All I can think of is Quantam of Solice lol...

And yes, bandwidth managemen needed INDEED. It isnt a big deal until I save up for another Flat screen anyway.

Well, originally, I was going to use this as an excuse to post my eventual project ManCave, now, no longer a viable option.

I have come across some financial difficulties and can no longer afford my own home, which is terrible.

I had my own small 12x7 room which was my man cave, and I made it work while I had it, but now I am moving in with my parents (who have been generous enough to help during this troubling time) with my wife and son (who will be 4 in June). So unfortunately I will be in total disarray for the next few months as I try to assess my current position with the company I am at.

There are a few good things out of this;

1) I can save up some money now for the first time in 5 years since owning my own house

2) I have been given half of my parents house (which is freaken huge for just 2 people, still dont know why they bought it) which is in essence, 3 bedrooms and a bathroom, the third bedroom is technically my parents office but they have cleared out a wall for me for my 2 needed desks (my own PC desk and my workstation desk).

3) I have been given the garage which we will turn into half living room half kitchen. If im lucky I might be able to fit in my tool area.

4) The back yard is huge, I only had a tiny tiny space, not big enough for anything like a swing set for the kiddo or to put my archery targets out back, but now, they have a huge area out back which is cleared out and is about an acre in size so we can do the kiddo's swing set and fun stuff as well as set up my archery targets near the lagoon, and did I mention the lagoon is stocked?

5) Swimming pool.

6) Awesome parents! My dad is a former postal worker, but chef at heart, so he cooks a hella lot of good ethnic food especially Thai. My mom is one of those 100% prideful Italian women who love to have the huge family dinners and cook for everyone and make them fat.

They benefit from this because I will end up re-wiring their entire house (cable, telephone, internet) and help my dad with his current building projects (outside tiki hut / cook station, and rebuilding the garage which he told me he actually planned on redoing for my family which is really awesome). I will also provide them with rent money even though they never asked for it, because of the extra expenses with electricity and water and whatnot.

Its a real shame that I had to lose my house, we purchased just before the housing market crashed, so our house unappreciated in value almost 200% which was terrible (not as bad as some though). Working for the state of GA, no one has seen a real raise in 5 years, so cost of living skyrocketed and no one got that increase. Health insurance went up 17% last year and already hearing plans of a 10% increase NEXT year as well. Furlough days also have been getting worse, had 5 last year, 7 this year, and hearing rumors of next years fiscal year being at almost 15 days, which is a serious lose in wages. So while the circumstances are immensely huge and damped the spirit a little bit, the fact that my parents were there and willing to help out is a true blessing in disguise.

So maybe, as me and my dad work on the building projects, I will upload photos as those essentially will become part of a mancave / man stuff.

Ah, I see now. However I am not having issues with bandwidth on my Internet, with roughly 12 devices connected I get 50mbps down and 5mbps up. The bandwidth I was referring to was from my TV provider. Satellite dishes can only provide so information to a certain number of boxes before a second dish is needed, which is why I have no TV in my mans room.

In light of the situation, I hope you land on your feet. It stinks to be in that position and hope it works for you in the end.

Besides a mancave is nice and all but it's not the #1 priority.

Good Luck!

Hey man, its hard for everyone right now, thats for sure. I know that working for the state (any state for that matter) can be hard when budgets are imploding left and right around local governments. I work in IT and where as this is a pretty steady field, we have laid off several developers in recent months and some of them have yet to be able to find more work. The sad part is that its because they are TOO good at what they do, and a lot of companies cant afford to hire the talent so instead of going with a senior dev or admin, they hire fresh graduates at 1/2 the cost.

One coworker who was laid off has kept in touch with me and told me that he has been told twice that he is over qualified, and even when he suggested that they hire him and reduce his expectd salary, employers refuse... talk about a catch 22.

Last June, I got a phone call from my mother asking me how my wife and I felt about moving back in with them and moving out of our Condo, I told her "Huh? I dont understand, we are doing fine financially" - with her to reply with "... but we arent. We are just seeing if its something you would consider so we can stay close to you and your family, we may lose our house and move out of state because CA is just too expensive." - After some deliberating with the wife for a few weeks, we decided to ditch our condo and take over my parents house finanically and allow them to rent the garage conversion from us (which is a studio apartment conversion). This also works out great for us as my mother (who is retired) has in return offered to babysit my 3 year old daughter while my wife and I are at work which saved us a ton on child care.

Ironically the studio they are living in now is where I lived before I got married. But it all worked out in the end as my wife and daugher and I went from a tiny sub 900ft condo to a 3k house (including attached studio apartment) with a huge yard with plenty of space for our families not to be on top of each other. In fact, its been working out so well for the past year that my best friend and his wife recently moved he mother back in with them and split the house also.

I guess my point here is that regardless of whether or not you needed the assistance, or your parents etc, combined households are becoming VERY common place and it sounds like you have great parents! This will be the 3rd time my parents would have lost their home due to financial hardships and I wasnt about to let it happen now that I had the ability to prevent it.

living OFF your parents is bad. living WITH your parents can be a great idea. :)

So with all thats happened we have already moved out of the house over the last week and moved in slowly with my mom and dad. We have already gotten our sons room (our first priority) done and to his likings. We have already started working on getting our room (more the wifeys design wise) to a point of her liking.

So far so good.

We cant tell whose happier, my son or my cat. Both seem estaticed. My son is so overjoyed to be spending time with his grandparents and having such a large backyard to run around in, and my cat is going bonkers because of all the new space for him to run around and new places to hide.

I completely understand that alot of people are going through a hardship financially right now, and while mine may not be AS BAD as others where I still HAVE a job, it is still rough none the less, I never thought I would ever be in this situation. When I first bought the house we were golden, everything was fine, but than cost of living started going up, so much so I was in the red every month, than I picked up a PT job ontop of my FT job to make up the difference, which worked out okay and we were back in the green or black. Than it went up again, as did insurance costs, back in the red. I picked up a second PT job and still couldnt even get in the black, so being in the red we had only one option left.

Shortsale

We will see what happens over the next few months as we have now begun the process as our realtor just posted the house yesterday in the locals. A sad sight none the less, but she said something to me and my wife and it really made me think.

Your house is just a box.

You two are the ones that make it a home. You can always change what you call the home and make new memories, because no matter where you go, if its you two, it will always be your home.

Sounds like a great realtor too!

I agree about the box comment. You have shelter, food, and support for your kid and in my life, thats number 1!

I have same keyboard and mouse setup.

What is that device your mouse is sitting on?

It's a 10+ year old Wacom tablet, I bought it a few years ago, Took me days getting it to work on win7, they just don't make em like that anymore.

very sleek clean setup Laffles.. love the red bias lighting. I bet the other side of your room looks like this, huh?
