Offline Consoles Devour $1.24 Billion of Electricity Annually

A bit self righteous I think...
If this is the same person I am thinking about, you should check out some of his elitist video game posts about his omnipotent fighting game skills and how everyone else but the elite few are scrubs.

I had "use common sense" in a prior post but then edited it thinking I might offend someone... like I was being rude. I'm not trying to be an asshole. I just believe that use common sense in your consumption. I don't need a study or legislation to tell me how to live my life.

I lay no claims to being a greenie but I use common sense about my use of <insert favorite commodity here>. I won't be celebrating Earth Day this year. Funny how the invites were printed on trees that were cut down. ??? I'll probably be driving my HMMWV, that had it's catalytic converters removed, through a National Forest that has been closed because the local chapter of hug a tree closed all people out (even though it's a *national* forest meaning you and I own it). Then I'll plug in my car at my local hospital because they have free energy plug-ins for up to four hours (where are the free gas pumps for my other vehicle?). Then I'll plug in said car for more free power at electric company utility. Then I'll empty my home pool and refill. (tongue-in-cheek). /rant.

At least we aren't fat, white, conservative, and gas guzzling fuck heads.

You seem to have forgotten rich. ;)

We're RICH, fat, white, conservative, gas guzzling fuck heads.

At least we aren't fat, white, conservative, and gas guzzling fuck heads. Being a fat, conservative, white, male, must suck. Especially when black and hispanic males are so much more attractive now.

Sorry dude, but fat, white, neckbeard, gun loving, small dick, and truck driving is no longer so good on the monetary basis that women don't have another choice. Hey toss in balding and you could make Kyle your mascot, must feel good eh!

See you in 2030 when your type is done and gone. There is nothing so wrong with America as rural whites. But, us liberals, well, we enjoy fucking your daughters when they make it in life and move the big city.

Quoted for proof that liberal racism is alive and strong. You are no better than the 'fat white rednecks' you talk about. Go find some clerk job with your superiority complex and worthless political science degree. :p

This is pretty normal for people that live in a city or downtown. Your electric bill is built into your condo fee or rent a large portion of the time, ditto with heating and other things (base rent here would be about 1400 for a studio + 250 a month in fees). It's not like having a house where the heating and base electric bill can be nuts, so most people just live crap running.

How many people here actually turn off their PC? I doubt that many.

Electric welfare? Of course you would support it. You mooch off as much unnecessary power as possible because it will even out with other tenants. Just because rural people use more gas, this gives you a free pass to waste resources and brag about it? What the fuck are you trying to prove exactly? That you and other city dwellers are just as much of a piece of shit as the rural people who intentionally waste limited resources?

God I hope it is the same person. That would really make my day :-D

This hyperbole serves no purpose. You don't have to agree with conversationalists but you should at least understand why they feel the way they do. It isn't about controlling what you do or don't do, it's about preservation of our home.

But then again, I'm probably wasting my time considering you've already busted out the tired Nazi comparison. That's like chapter one in the mindless ideologue playbook.

Since I can't edit the prior post, note that it should say conservationists not conversationalists. :)

And reset my date and time, maybe even the BIOS battery having to be replaced...nope

My waste is nothing compared to white hicks in red states that mooch off blue states, drive long distances to work, and have larger homes. When they believe in evolution and raw science, and start to conserve, they can bitch about my minor dent. Till then it's more "lol hicks in flyover country" for the real US.

I'm going all the way back to this post after reading all of your other posts in this thread to demonstrate how at the very beginning of this discussion you just did not grasp the fundamental idea behind the argument.....

using someone else's wastefulness is not legitimate justification for your own wastefulness and lack of personal responsibility for your own actions. that is actually what feeds the mob mentality that is bringing us down.....

did you notice i said US? as in not just you bro? whether you want to admit it or not, your actions and decisions impact everyone else as well as future generations. what you can afford has absolutely nothing to do with what you consume....or is that fact too much to handle for your egotistical, self-centered, feeble mind?

i leave you with my simple gauge in life when met with these decisions...."just because you can doesn't mean you should" it applies very well to any decision you question yourself on day to day. it's not religious or politically partisan. it's not racial or socioeconomically motivated.

outside of all the things you will want to use as justification and rationalization, there is this personal responsibility we all have if we live on this planet. it is something that is omnipresent and irrefutable. it exists whether you want to believe it or not and you contribute to it whether you want to or not. you are a being on this planet and you have a particular personal responsibility to act in accordance with the laws of nature that you cannot fully comprehend, you cannot change, and you cannot get away from.

life is far far more complex than you have given it credit for, time to get a lesson in life. may someone teach you some moral humility while sparing your life

Wow gotta start unplugging to save money

You don't. According to what I've read here (didn't read the actual study), the study assumes (complete ass-pull assumption, no joke) that 30% of people leave their consoles on - not just plugged in, but literally on and sitting at the dashboard - 24/7. They extrapolated their figures from there, which makes them basically worthless. The standby modes only consume a few watts of power at most (someone mentioned 1-3 watts), so unless you're committed to trimming every watt where you can, you can save a lot more power in other areas of your life. :)

If you read the paper, and I don't expect you or many others here did, hell I didn't but I skimmed through enough of the highlights to see exactly what they did. They're basing the estimates off sales of systems, off projected hours that each system is actually in use going so far as to show that Wii users use the system much less than PS3 & Xbox users, hell they even go so far as to say how often it's used to watch movies which has a different power consumption, and yeah they do in fact state that standby power is like 1-2 watts for each system.
I read enough. Did you? This grad student arbitrarily assumed that all consoles sold were in use, that 30% of consoles were always left on and cutting this would somehow result in a 62.5% energy savings?? ...or 60%, depending on what part of the article you read. A bunch of hyperbolic assumptions by some grad student that gets picked up by the media to support the green cult.
