Pro Tip: Putting DLC on the game disc is probably a bad idea if you plan on eventually charging $20 for it.

Personally, I was really surprised when I heard the news that the characters had been hacked, basically," Ayano told GameSpot. "So I was pretty disappointed by that. I was really surprised at how skillful the hackers were, basically.

But I was really kind of disappointed that it created this kind of environment where a bunch of players were playing the characters but a bunch were unable to play with them.

Hmm... I can't think of a solution for this quandry...

You're surprised? You haven't been paying attention to the last 30 years of software piracy? Are you surprised when you walk outside and the sky is blue?

"...hackers have been able to play with them on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game because the completed characters are included on the disc."

This doesn't make any sense. From what I read from all the current game developers, piracy ONLY happens on the PC and that's why they make shitty PC games. Could it be that the shitty games are why people aren't buying? No... I'm sure it's just the piracy.

If you have the "DLC" done in time to put it on the game disc then it should have been part of the game to begin with and not DLC. The consumers didn't want to be milked/suckered again, how is this shocking?

What a studio of idiots...have they been asleep for the last...I don't even know how long? Most games, and anything else on the disc, are cracked and key gen'd before official release.

Impossible, console games never get hacked/pirated.

They better call off the PC release that's coming next month.

nice if I could read it on my mobile (stupid sites that use rmbl format what ever that is )

DLC content should not be on the disk, just cheap way of getting money

Awwwww... does da devewoper need hugs? :(

If you're going to pull this crap, at least do it *right*. Make the available code unusable and encrypted - just by a few hundred kilobytes - and it'll stay 'unlocked' long enough for you to make your precious $.

I think the developer would prefer the $60 for the on-disc DLC :p

i can see the point in paying extra for downloadable content- it wasnt origionaly included in the disk; it took extra effort to produce after the game launched; it takes money to host the files; etc.

"DLC on-disk" is not DLC. you might as well sell that content in a seperate package like an expansion pack. or how about you include that content in the origional game and price the whole thing accordingly.

piracy happens when moron publishers do stupid things like this. if you pay $40 for a disc, get home and realize you can only use 80% of that disk, and the publisher tells you to pay more to be able to access the whole disk you just thought you paid for already- people get frustrated, some people get angry, some people take revenge.

frustration is the motivator for circumvention.

Piracy! on Consoles!? next your going tell me there is no Easter Bunny and Santa Claus

Any word on how people enabled this? The developer is butt-hurt about people accessing what is already on the disc - well next time don't put it on the disc!

This guy is repetitive too.

But I was really kind of disappointed that it created this kind of environment where a bunch of players were playing the characters but a bunch were unable to play with them.

Next time, they shouldn't try to pull a fast one over the consumer.

To clarify the situation (eg: people who didn't read the article), the reason why Capcom put DLC on the disc is to
1. save money
2. prevent compatibility issues

1. @ghost6303, they aren't necessarily hosting anything. PSN and XBL servers are, as they are responsible for issuing any DLC's or updates/patches/etc. Each time a game issues DLC or update of some sort, they have to pay money to Sony and/or Microsoft. To save money, they decided instead to just put the DLC on the disc, maybe with some (poor) encryption so hackers can't get to it.

2. The compatibility issues I'm talking about are with people with the DLC unlocked trying to play other people without it unlocked. MK9 ran into the same problem where if the DLC weren't mandatory, then some people won't download it, and therefore won't be able to play with other people with the DLC. This in turn splits the online matchmaking. This issue is easily overcome by forcing the DLC down people's throats, but to do that you'd also have to make it free, and I don't think either company wants to give stuff out for free. The compromise then is to make some sort of compatibility pack (which I think MK9 has done), but that costs time+money and has the slight risk of also getting hacked and everyone getting free DLC characters.

I'm an avid fighting game fan, but this DLC fiasco and others (hello ME3) are really setting bad examples of the gaming industry. The $10 "online pass" was already enough; now we're getting even less of the games we buy.

I'll take what's behind door number three.

/as in, let the software industry kill itself. I'll just take the opportunity to buy a new cycle, or a new gun, or whatever, instead of keeping up with the latest hardware just so I can play the three or four good games a year (amid the sea of half assed games).

I think I want a SCAR 17s next. I should thank idiots like him for re-aligning my interests toward more lasting and tangible pursuits.

Piracy or not, this is how industries kill themselves. That is, by trying to manipulate their customers instead of just listening to them and giving them what they crave. It's a failure of management, and it's almost always caused by hubris. At any rate, they insult the customer's intelligence.

Does anyone remember when ALL the characters were on a disc, and the only way to play as them was with cheat codes or to unlock them from beating the game?

Now days you have to pay $ for them.

Good, there's a reason this game has only sold 335K copies, its cause you are trying too sell half a game at full price, and your customers won't take it

Same with Asura's wrath, you sold half a game at full price, thus, nobody wants it

When people get around your bullshit roadblocks, don't cry foul about how "We're hurting you" when you didn't have my fucking interests in mind to begin with

This is nothing. Who remembers the old ID software shareware CD's that had every game they ever released on them and all you needed was a simple code to unlock them. Good times.

This goes against my general beliefs but I really hate the idea of developers making a game 75% complete, charging full price for it then releasing the other 25% in pieces at $10-20 a piece. That is total bullshit so I don't feel too bad for the developers and find myself rooting for the hackers in this case. Call me a hypocrite but I can't get too worked up about a little "social justice" so to speak.

This is their way of combating used sales. Eventually, all games will be $40 at the store, and $20 in "downloadable" content to make the game complete (or higher...). That way, they make their money no matter if the game is sold new, or used.

Except shareware was almost always given out for free and you paid the money to unlock the rest of the game, which was no different than just buying a full copy. What Capcom was doing would be the equivalent of selling the shareware at full price, then charging even more to unlock the rest of the content already on the disc(s).

Blame Sony for this one.

Yes, Sony.

The extra characters were supposed to stay unavailable until the release of the PS Vita.

"They will be available from the start on the PS Vita version of the game, but console players will be charged $20 (1,600 Microsoft points) to unlock them."

Essentially, Sony paid off Capcom to use this as a marketing lever for the PS Vita.

"Combatting used sales" is bullshit. I understand that GameStop rapes consumers with $5 less used games and reaps nearly 100% profit from it, but I should be able to sell my used games to other people directly and reclaim part of my investment for it as much as I damn well please.

I can't believe how no one else noticed this part.

I agree it is a scam to make people buy a PS Vita - clearly Sony is worried they won't sell themselves..

Because before this point Capcom had never released any characters as DLC or sold loads of extra silly content to a game before releasing it all for free in the next version. Then made DLC for that and then making another version? They have never released multiple versions of the same game at full price and then made you buy more DLC for it. Ever.

But somehow, sony made them do it. How those mighty companies who have never done this before and would never evar do this have fallen...:p

Nobody missed it. Yes, Sony's PS Vita is the reason why there are 12 DLC characters which are not (or should not) be available yet, but that's not why the DLC is on the disc.

I guess I look at the glass as half full..

People are using characters online that aren't available? BAN WAVE INCOMING! if only microsoft / sony had a way to detect it

Wasn't the Mass Effect 3 DLC as easy as editing a txt file? How was that skillful?
