Getting my Nokia 900 today. Totally forgot to check. Does Windows OS play MKV files etc. Something like the MOBO player on android does anything like that exist on Windows OS?

Nope.

No user accessible file system, no apps that can play mkvs (that I am aware of).

Crap :-( I think I may end up returning the phone then :-( Oh well live and learn

Convert it to WMV or mp4 and it should work fine. Also, what's the deal with watching movies on your phone?

At work I watch a movie or tv show sometimes on my lunch break...

Conversion is fine and all but it's still not as convenient as simply browsing to the a shared folder and playing whatever is in there immediately.

All you need is a GSII and Dice player and you can watch whatever you want :D

True, one reason why I like Windows x86 tablets, play a BD if want.

Got my 900 yesterday and so far very impressed. Had an issue with getting Gmail to work but that cleared itself up earlier today. If you want lots of flexibility then no, that's not Windows Phone. But if you want a great smart phone, not a pocket PC then this will be the ticket for a lot of those people.

Great screen, LTE is sweet performance wise though the 5 GB monthly cap sucks. And it just flies. Microsoft is doing a great job of getting a solid and fast user experience on mid-range hardware.

Hope you enjoy your 900!:D

It takes a lot longer to convert your movies than 5 minutes.
In this circumstance, it wont even take 5 minutes to do the needed conversion.

Windows Phone 7 actually supports a fairly wide range of codecs for video and audio, so you will (most likely) not need to re-encode anything.

The issue here is the MKV wrapper that the audio and video are inside of. You can pull the audio and video streams out of an MKV wrapper and repackage them in an MP4 wrapper almost instantly (the only limit is how fast your hard disk can rewrite the data). Nothing gets re-encoded, there's no loss of quality, and the file size stays near-identical.

I am not positive but I am pretty sure I've been successfully watching MKV files using PLEX media server.

I just played Hugo using PLEX and it's a 720p 6gb .mkv

It plays well and stutters rarely.

I'm pretty sure the OP is referring to playing mkvs on the device itself, not being streamed from a computer.

A lot of modern android phones can play mkv files without converting them. (e.g. the Galaxy S II that was mentioned a few posts ago)

I agree, that is what the OP is talking about. Seeing as how there is not an option right now. Maybe this will help him.

I'd rather use mp4 container anyway, especially if you're not using subtitles. h264 + aac in mp4 container is much better option that same stuff in mkv if you ask me. You can always mux your mkv into mp4 without converting anything if the content is h264 + aac.

I doubt WP will play 1080P high bitrate content in an MP4 container. And if you have content in an MKV it won't have AAC audio.

Agreed, although I'm curious as to what can. I can't do it on my Galaxy Tab either.

It's a PHONE screen, why would you not want to convert it down anyway. You're literally not getting 1080p quality on a tiny screen, there's just no point. Save some file space and convert it down, get some room for your music and whatever else you want installed.
