GTX 680 In Stock Thread

Ehh.. I killed my 7970 when I slipped with a screwdriver

Probably going to try to sell it on eBay as a "for parts/repair" item. I cut some traces with the tip of the screw driver. Someone may be able to fix them, but they were just too small for me.

Right now i'm using a GTX460 768mb version I had laying around which is kind of painful at 2560x1600...

I guess you contacted Sapphire to see if they couldn't repair it for you?

You know, I didn't think of asking if they would repair it. I just figured that I damaged it, so any warranty should be out of the question, but if they have a board repair shop I can pay for, maybe I'll give it a shot.

Radio shack sells trace repair pens, as an option

I'm aware, thank you. (See my thread on the topic here.)

The particular traces are so small - however - that even under a scope at work, I simply could not do the repair myself.

I figured I could sell it as "for parts/repair" on eBay, and someone more skilled at this than I could give it a try, and potentially get a very good deal on a 7970.

I'm sure they get the occasional person that has accidentally damaged their card and so they will no doubt offer to repair it for you. They may charge you and they may not, I'd say it is worth it to find out before you go and sell it for parts.

Lulz. Im thinking of doing the same on Craigslist for the lulz. See what kind of emails I get. Maybe post em in this thread :)

LOlz I was about to post that. Good businessman hope he gets it. I'm surprised retailers are still @ $500. Usually if you can't meet demand you raise prices until you can.

I just did this. I figure I can always cancel it if it becomes available on Newegg before here.

Just got a delivery estimate from Amazon. April 17th-21st.

First time since ~2001 a major system component I've bought hasn't come from Newegg.

When did you put your card on order?

Approximately the time of my "I just did this" post I was quoting, so ~3:30pm yesterday.

AARRGH!

I put an order in 2 days ago and still haven't gotten an estimated shipping..

WTF AMAZON!?!?!

Cant wait for the 680 to come in stock, this 7970 has done nothing but piss me off.

Why? What's wrong with it? My 7970 was great (until I killed it with a screwdriver).

I like some of the sleek new stuff the 680 offers (adaptive vsync, clocking down when not needed to stay cool and quiet, etc.) which is why I am getting it instead of another 7970, but the 7970 is a solid board, and while th e680 has a slight performance lead it's not really a noticeable one.

What bad experiences have you had with the 7970 that has pissed you off?

nah, it's pretty sleazy. It's like scalping.

I agree that this is the method used to control supply and demand, but it should be the discretion of the original manufacturer to set the price, not for some douche to take advantage and "scalp" the cards.

Was it the same brand card? Maybe they got the Gigabyte cards in, but not the specific card you placed an order for?

Actually, no it was an EVGA card. Oh well.. Guess I will be waiting another week to get the damn thing :(

I think Nvidia has screwed the pooch on this one. They should have had enough inventory to support a launch. I don't get it.

I would have to blame TSMC more than nvidia on this one. I'm sure NV would love to have enough for all those that want it so that they can make money but they can't do much about how fast it can be made.

Partially true, but then again, NV could have built up stock until they felt they had a sufficient quantity to launch with without resulting in shortages.

That being said, I don't think it's really necessary to be too harsh on Nvidia here. This is pretty much the same thing that happens with every single desirable new product launch. The 7970 wasn't on shelves very long when it launched either.

Maybe they are selling a lot more than projected. I don't remember so much excitement and demand about 480s or 580s, or really any top tier card.

No way, releasing earlier is better. At least some people get the new cards, and more issues are resolved sooner for when more cards are available.

To be honest, I think nvidia would be screwed in any case.

1) if they waited for stock to build up, everyone would be saying "its not ready" or "they are soo slow to the market because they are scrambling to respond to AMD". The only thing they could probably do is a soft launch with a later release date. but they would still be late with it. To compound it all, both nvidia and their foundry partner (TSMC) don't say a word of any occuring problems so as to not affect their financial operations. (ie stock price) - i think anyway.

2) If they did a semi-hard launch, as they did, because of what seems to be foundry yield issues, all would say "they launched with too few stock in the channels" as they have. In any case, they would have to choose the less damaging of two bad options. Also, I think everyone would also say "nvidia's design is not production friendly" or "there is fabrication production node issue @ 28nm" - ie TSMC's fault. or both.

I wish nvidia would not rely on one foundry though, me thinks it could scupper a launch plan with a bottleneck of only one foundry to produce your chips >_< all eggs in one basket = bad imo.

Thats like saying blame the chinese kid who build your ipad becasue it got busted... Blame the materials that go into the 680 for not beeing cheap enough,or blame a meteor that fell on the plant and intrerupted production lol ofc u blame the firm who sells u the product not who build it rofl u guys ....

why are these so sold out?

Because more people want them than TSMC is able to produce?

Being a new process, and since these are squeezing the very most out of what was originally intended as a mid range GPU, they are probably seeing heavy binning as well, further reducing supply.

I would imagine that by the time they get around to launching binned versions as 660's or 670's, supply of these will be plentiful.
