OCZ Petrol 128GB $55 shipped AC AR

Weird, I can't find any professional reviews from a quick google search on this drive. How does it compare to Agility 3?

I don't normally cite Newegg reviews as a trustworthy source, but there are a lot of people indicating the drive died after a few weeks.

Was thinking of picking one up as a compliment to the M4 I just ordered, but eh. Seems like a gamble.

Meh, in for 2 for my lappy..

Odd though, I think the coupons got removed at checkout because both orders show up as 84.69 and dont show the coupon anymore... Still not a bad deal with rebate. Worst case scenario, I keep RMA'ing them till OCZ sends me a better model

in for one.. Missed the crucial by a tiny bit.. grr!!

I'll do the same and keep rma'ing till I get a good one from OCZ

Promised myself I'd never use another OCZ product... this deal almost has me biting, but it isn't worth the chance of misery and the dealing with OCZ.

The crazy low price on this for a 128GB SSD has me ultra-nervous. Worth a shot?

Oh well, I'll bite and see how it turns out. I just won't use the drive for anything critical.

The Petrol is the Indilynx Everest controller. It's the ASYNC flash verison of the Octane drive which is the SYNC flash version. This is a very good controller. Just make sure you flash the drive to the newest available.

To do this you have to connect it as a secondary drive on an existing machine that only has the windows default AHCI drivers installed. Then you can download OCZ toolbox and flash the drive to the newest firmware which EVERYONE should do on EVERY SSD before installing your OS on it.

Very decent drive for an epic price, book it.

What if you only have a laptop? Can't flash the firmware?

Holy Fuck... I hate OCZ, but this is super tempting.. Even without the rebate its a great deal.. Not the fastest, but grab 4 & raid 0 them..

@thecrafter If you only have a laptop yes you are screwed.

@evil 3 years if I'm mistaken

The Agility 3 is a Vertex 3 with ASYNC flash. It's a very good drive. The Sandforce 2281 controller I believe is a bit better then the Everest controller but not by much. Both these drives are ASYNC so the performance wouldn't be worlds apart.

Seems hella cheap. Speeds aren't great compared to most newer drives but still will blow away any HDD.

i bite for something to attach to my old Laptop and move out the current 700 gb from there.

Yeah, dead. I was going to get one after work, but I guess more money in my pocket.

Better a dead deal than dead 180 proof OCZ crapohol mucking up your rig. These are terrible.

Meh.. I guess we shall see..
Mine already shipped.. Ive got an old DV8000 Id like to breath some new life into.. Its just a lappy I use at work when im not taking calls. If mine turn out OK im gonna RAID em in my main rig.. But yeah, looks like a total crapshoot.. Hopefully the updated FW's will not kill them.

Crystal 8-ball predicts this thread staying angrily bumped for the next 3 weeks.

I think I'm at the point where it wouldn't be worth my time if they were giving away ocz drives (hell, they practically are in this market at >2gb/$). Simply put, even with non critical data I'd be wasting too much effort having to replace this drive at an inopportune time, either dealing with a notoriously unhelpful ocz who may give me a replacement that is just as prone to failure, or switching to a reliable drive later and being out the money for this as well.

Mine shipped to.. I will report on how much of a fail this drive is.

I lost faith in OCZ products a long time ago and swore off their products. Had some bad ram and dragged their feet through the RMA process. I got frustrated and just ended up throwing the sticks away. Gave them a second chance and bought an OCZ power supply that died within 3 years. They denied a warranty because it went 3 days past the warranty based on my receipt. I said fuck em from there on out.

Lol. OCZ must really be trying to get rid of there horrible drives. They are on sale every other second.

Ya, in my case something like 7 or 8 OCZ power supplies all failed spontaneously within a month of each other, all around the 1 year mark, after OCZ fucked all of us on the rebates (claiming incorrectly filled out forms and rebates "lost in mail" is just insulting when a company uses the same excuses to deny rebates to literally 5 different people that you know in real life, all at exactly the same time).

That's the kind of situation where you don't even bother to find out about warranty service because you're so determined to never deal with the company again... which is a good thing considering how big of a failure OCZ has become as an enthusiast brand. They're at the bottom of the barrel with Seagate.
